It seemed for a long time that Dean Martin would never come back to England. But just when you thought Dean wouldn't show up then finally in 1983 there he was! He not only did a concert at the Apollo Victoria Theater, but he also celebrated his 66th birthday and received a lifetime achievement award from the Variety Club of Great Britain.

martin wright :: I am truly fascinated :: How long exactly did Dean Martin stay in the UK? -- Bruce Forsyth on this video recounts how, when he had finished a 45-minute show in Vegas, Dean "had a plane waiting" to take him home to Beverly Hills in Los Angeles... Presumably then, when he visited the UK, he travelled by chauffeur-driven car.... A friend of mine told me a true story that her grandmother met Dean on a narrow cobbled road in Barry Island, in South Wales, Wales' valleys of course being where comic Tommy Cooper hailed from.... I don't know whether this is true, or whether you can confirm that Dean Martin ever visited Barry Island in South Wales, and if he did, what what the reason for him being there??....

I was given a ticket for this but could not go so sent the wife, biggest regret of my life. If only I had realised that the chances of seeing him live again would be rarer than winning the lottery.

marlyyy Although he was known as something of a ladies man, I think the one real love of Deans life, his ‘soul mate’ as many have described her, was Jeannie. She was the one he always returned to, even after they divorced and his third short-lived ‘mid-life crisis’ marriage to Catherine fizzled out. And Jeannie was the one who was there for him during the final sad and painful years of his life.

Dean was in Britain in the early 50s with Jerry Lewis and they were treated rather badly, Dean swore he'd never go back (read Jerry's book Dean and Me: A Love Story)
@shakeystearoom
@shakeystearoom 6 лет назад
wilburbonzo True. Dean's issue was with the press, not with the people. The hecklers at the end of the show (with Jerry) didn't represent the audience and were trying to make a political point--in doing so, the successful performance was overshadowed by the disruptive few. Dean took it personally, I suppose, but he was clear in stating that the people were wonderful. He just didn't want to travel that far and have it happen again. I'm glad he was able to be convinced that a return visit would be much different.

The UK welcomed black American performers who had to perform to segregated audiences and on the Chitlin circuit in the US. Paul McCartney brought Hendrix off that circuit to the UK, where he pretty much blasted Eric Clapton off the stage But lots of blues singers, Little Richard had the Beatles fronting for him before they were famous, and they learned their early style from him. Kudos to the UK for that, they don't deserve the racist tag attached to them now. Just play those videos of black artists in the UK in the 50s 60s etc. Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Brits loved it

@Robert Beck No, he said a Republican. You're talking about Adam Schiff or Bernie Sanders. Oh, btw...I do believe Dean Martin was, in fact, a Republican. He was a solid supporter of Ronald Reagan, for sure...and btw...Reagan had a fuller head of hair than you do.

Sammy did indeed need the money as he left his widow with mountains of debt. He spent it all and then a whole lot more.

@@DINOLOVER6717 That's a racist stereotype if I've ever heard one. Sammy was incredibly talented, and much loved by Dean and Frank. All you need to know. Frank saved his career after he lost his eye; teaching him how to swim to enable him to maintain balance, because unlike yourself, Frank was a good person.

Dean Martin hated the British.
@lindashelley3635
@lindashelley3635 4 года назад
Mark Harrison I don’t feel that he ‘hated’ the British, just that he was unhappy about the way some audiences treated him and Jerry when they came over here in the early 1950s. At the time they were still performing together as a team and I don’t know whether it was because their act didn’t go over very well or because, as some have suggested, a few people were allegedly making an ‘anti-American’ political point (although I have always been a fan of Dean, at that time I was only a toddler, just a few years old, so I don’t know the details). At any rate, by the time Dean came over again some 30 years later to perform on his own, he had become much more popular, as can be seen in the recording of his show at the London Palladium.
@susantunbridge4612
@susantunbridge4612 3 года назад
Dean Martin did not hate the British, or any other group. He just is not that kind of person. He seemed, in fact. to have a thing going with Petula Clark, and I believe he went to the UK to appear on her show, with a horse. The only person he may have hated is Jerry Lewis, who was a pretty despicable person, although he really worked on not looking that way. He did a great spoof of Nazis in one of his early shows.
@susantunbridge4612
@susantunbridge4612 3 года назад
@@lindashelley3635 The attacks were directed at Jerry Lewis for some reason. I never could stand Lewis, instinctive dislike, but I don't know what provoked the UK press to go after him. Remember, he was known as "The Dark Prince of Comedy", and that is for a reason. Obsessive, controlling and mean. Dean had so much fun after he left Jerry Lewis. If it hadn't been for the tragic loss of his son, he'd probably still be going. Absolutely the opposite to Jerry Lewis. Kind, humble, talented, suave, good looking and attractive.
