Dean Martin appearance in court for gun possession.
ABC Evening News segment Thursday August 05 1982 REPORTER John Marshall News 4 Beverly Hills
I'd bet money Dean NEVER said he considered people coming up to him in restaurants "life threatening".

ooh the reporter tried to get a controversial opinion out of him there asking if he believes everyone should carry guns but Deano was skilful enough to settle things down with a humorous response

SirTibzy I personally believe that Dean was not as lackadaisical or clueless as he often made out. He may not have had much formal education, but I feel that he was pretty astute and had what we now call ‘street smarts’. Plus he seems to have been a pretty good judge of character, like when Frank became enamoured with the Kennedy’s and talked of being invited to the White House if JFK was elected, it was Dean who apparently told him that “You’re gonna find out that there’ll be no Wops in Camelot”. Also, Jerry once told in an interview that often, when he was negotiating a deal with someone to do with the act, he would look across at Dean and he would quietly signal that there was something dodgy about the other guy and that he was not to be trusted; “Dean would let me know without saying a word, and he was usually right.” Dean was really a heck of a lot smarter than his carefully-nurtured public image made him seem.

As a Brit, this news item surprised me. I thought Americans had 'the right to bear arms' , isn't that one of the amendments to their Contitution? Or is it that the law has changed since 1982? Actually, come to think of it, didn't Dean Paul once get into trouble for trying to sell his gun collection? I seem to recall reading something about that somewhere once.
@2packs4sure
@2packs4sure 7 лет назад
Yea, Dean Paul got nailed for trying to sell his guns, I think it may have been a sting but I don't remember. Both Dean Paul and Ricci were big into all thing military. Dean had the right to own the gun that got him in trouble he just didn't have the right to carry it in public.
@lindashelley3635
@lindashelley3635 7 лет назад
2packs4sure Thank you for your answer, that's very interesting. Here in the UK most ordinary people don't have guns and probably never even see one in everyday life. Even our police don't usually carry them as a matter of course, except in more recent years in public places like airports ( that has become more common since 9/11, and the terrorist attacks that have sadly become more frequent in recent years) That's not to criticise the American culture at all, it's just interesting to note the differences between our two ways of life. One thing that does occur to me is to wonder why someone in the public eye like Dean didn't simply have a bodyguard if he felt threatened (though I can't imagine anyone wanting to harm such a likeable guy, but I suppose there were 'sickos' about even back in the 1980s)

@@lindashelley3635 It's up to the individual state, California and New York has some of the harshest gun laws on the books. While there are 36 states that allow open or concealed carry with a permit. The 2nd amendment is a very highly debated subject in the United States. Some people say guns are evil, others say it's the individual who uses the gun, the gun itself is an inanimate object. The truth is that cities and states with the toughest/strictest gun laws seem to have the highest crime rates. The states with the concealed carry laws statistically have lower incidents of crime.... But essentially you'll find the more liberal the city or state the stricter or more difficult it is to own a firearm.
@grigorirasputin5020
@grigorirasputin5020 2 года назад
@@2packs4sure Actually. Dean did have the right to own and carry a firearm, it is just that slimeball legislators, judges, and cops, in his state and others choose to ignore The United States Constitution. They have legislated and ruled against this and other parts of what was supposed to be the supreme law of our land for over a hundred years, now.

@lindashelley3635

2packs4sure I think you may well be right, I seem to remember hearing another report on this incident where Dean is supposed to have told the police that any substance they found in his blood sample (or “any sh*t that you find” as he allegedly put it) was a prescription painkiller he was taking at the time. And, according to a story that Deana wrote in her book, once when she was visiting her Dad and she had a headache, he gave her just one Percodan and it made her feel so woozy that she was worried about driving herself. So if Dean was taking them regularly it may well have affected his driving.
@jerrylewisthekid5479

The Percodan was given to him by his "best friend", his inseparable personal assistant: Mack Gray. Considered by many to be an enemy ... precisely because of the Percodan issue.

@@jerrylewisthekid5479 Yeah, that was a minor problem in the 60's that got much worse in the early 70's when Dean hurt his back then it got REALLY bad in the mid 70's and stayed that way more or less until the end. Actually he was taking hydrocodone for back pain and just let everybody assume he was drunk. I think he ended up with private security but ironically his son Dean Paul was charged with illegal possession of machine guns and tried to sell one to an undercover agent so I can't believe his father didn't know the law.

He was taking PERCODAN. His closest friend Mack Gray sold it to him, it's all written in the book by Nick Tosches. AND HE HAD NO BACK PAIN, it was Jerry taking Percodan for excruciating back pain after splintering a vertebra in a fall after a show. Jerry quit in 1978, Dean Martin did not. They arrested him not because he was drunk but because he was driving high on percodan and with a loaded and ready gun in the car. But for you Americans, everything is normal. Isn’t that ridiculous, and only in California do they paint everyone with the same brush. It doesn’t matter why or who it’s guilty. Well where I live any law abiding citizens may carry a loaded pistol. Because if someone wants to hurt you, they can no matter what law they have. This is to keep them from hurting you.
