When I was young, I loved to watch her dance, and she had a beautiful singing voice. I was sad when she died, we lost a very talented lady. This clip brought a smile back to me.
(1:36) I'm in heaven (it's very nice, Dean) I'm in heaven (dancing like this) And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak (oh! I feel so weak) And I seem to find the happiness I seek (I love your aftershave) When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek Heaven (do you mind, Dean?) I'm in heaven (am I holding you tight?) And the cares that hung around me through the week (you have a nice physique) Seem to vanish like a gamblers lucky streak (why don't you try to relax?) When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek Dance with me I want my arm about you The charms about you will carry me to Heaven I'm in heaven And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak And I seem to find the happiness I seek When we're out together (with my head on your shoulder) When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek
I like how they had something like a broom fall at 3:11 and they kept the take in and telecast on the finished show on NBC . And to think Miss Prowse probably rehearsed that many times while old DM just saw a run through with somebody else working with Miss Prowse once and stepped in to tape that once with broom fall and all . Then home for dinner with Jeannie and the kids , Just another Sunday afternoon two hours in the office . That Greg Garrison was a genius !
You can see those years with Jerry in this clip. Dean is the comic straight man here -- just like he was so often with Jerry. In most acts, the comic gets the laughs. And Jerry often got laughs. But in their act, Dean got laughs by playing it straight. And that was unusual.
Poor Juliet Prowse - gone too young at just 59, and not known and thus unappreciated by the younger folks. I'm 47 and know of her through her chairing the ballroom dancing competition on PBS. It wasn't the same without her, either.
I am 36 and I enjoyed listening to her, on my grandad's sweet charity record. Such a beautiful voice with lots of power. Wish I had seen the show on Broadway it would have been breathtaking, for me she will always be the one and only sweet charity.
Grew up in the 70s with Bing Crosby specials, Perry Como, Sonny & Cher, Donny & Marie . . . oh those were the best of times! Today all we have is complete trash.
Old DM and the late Miss Prowse were doing the dance in similar fashion to the famous Yul Brenner number " Shall We Dance " in the Broadway musical THE KING AND I . I find it ironic that the song "Cheek To Cheek" the NBC censors were looking to see if Miss Prowse did not show too much cheek while doing her finishing pirouettes . Dean Martin always took a back seat to his guests and let them do their thing . I find it hard to believe that Jerry Lewis on his variety show would be in the background to Miss Prowse .
