Dean's alveoloplasty is a type of alveoloplasty, which is a surgical procedure to reshape the jawbone after a tooth or teeth have been extracted. In Dean's alveoloplasty, the bone between the teeth is removed, but the bone on the outer surface of the jaw is left intact. The labial cortex is repositioned palatally with finger pressure.
In Obwegeser's modification, the labial (cheek) and palatal (tongue) cortices (the outer layers of bone) are repositioned. This is done when the anterior overjet (the distance between the front teeth of the upper jaw and the front teeth of the lower jaw) is too great to be reduced by repositioning the labial plate alone.
