Dean Sluyter (spelled "Sluyter") has taught natural approaches to meditation and awakening since 1970.
His highly acclaimed books include Fear Less and Natural Meditation. Dean gives talks, workshops, and retreats throughout the United States and beyond, from Ivy League colleges to maximum-security prisons. He has made several media appearances and has completed numerous pilgrimages and retreats in India, Tibet, Nepal, and the West. 'Every form of effort is agitation.' (meaning stirring things up again as opposed to settling down and relaxing). This really stood out for me!

Thanks for hosting and posting such excellent podcasts. I bought both of Dean's books and have read each twice. He really makes meditation SO easy. I have tried since the 70's but his communication has really gotten me there. Dean's RU-vids and website are outstanding when you need a reminder / jump start. Yes...oil has been changed and the tires rotated. Thank you, Dean! Thank you, Marc!

Folks like myself who have struggled with effortful meditation should seriously consider listening to talks like Dean's. The same ideas can be found in other traditions that teach effortless methods of meditation (TM, Zen Shikantaza, Mahamudra, Dzogchen) but I think Dean does an excellent job of distilling the absolute essence of those approaches in his teachings without too much of the religious lingo that may be off-putting to some.. If you're not familiar with this nondirective approach to meditation it can be a real game changer if you thought meditation is 'too hard' or 'my mind is all over the place' or 'I cannot focus'. What I've learned from Dean's videos and books is that trying to 'do' meditation is where many of us fail or at the very least we try too hard. It is like pulling on a flower to make it grow faster, when all we need to do was water it, let it have some sunshine and just sit back and LET it grow. Similarly, we shouldn't meditate but instead, let the universe meditate us. :)

Thanks for your comment! I contemplated the title, "How To Do Meditation" as you mention, it's not something you really "do". We're keeping it as is for now because this is what people search for, but it could be called, "How & Why of Meditation"

It was a good interview. Only feedback I have is that some of the questions are not clear. Such at the end, I am not sure if you are asking if 2 times per day is needed and at time 40:30 it is not clear what the questions are. You kept saying 2 times per day but I am not sure if you were asking a question or not? Also he never actually gave a how to but great interview overall!

Thanks for the feedback. Transcendental meditation is 2x a day and many meditation teachers recommend 2x a day practice.
