In this video, I hope to share some light on the Tone Master Pro at it's current state of development. While I believe Fender is doing a great job, I do have some information you may want to consider if you have a Tone Master Pro or are debating grabbing one.
TL;DR: They are great units, but they need more development.
I honestly use 3 amps on this unit. They sound great and don't require a ton of time to get up and running. If I am feeling froggy and want a dedicated Crunch amp, I have 4 amps I'll use.

I know there’s a lot of people getting into modelers for the first time. If you want some feedback on your rigs, upload them to the cloud and leave me a comment on this video with the name of it. I’ll download it and play it then I’ll give you feedback to help you learn modeling. Honestly, I may even make a video about it. I have enough time off until the 8th of January haha. Maybe some other content creators will host the same challenge and we can all learn some new tricks. 🤘🤘

Excellent video! I’d love to see a digital capo and metronome as mentioned in the video. Would also like to see them either improve the Marshall amps or replace with a good Soldano clone. Also a Revv would be fantastic. And the ability to copy pedals or settings from one preset into another.

Thanks for your time and effort. Finally someone in RU-vidland said here's how to use this thing. Navigation documentation from Fender sucks. I spent a lot of time drilling down on too many options and I wish I had picked up on your videos a couple months ago. Not being an audio engineer some of the terminology and what a function does just blew past me. Thanks again.

Regarding the Fender expression pedal, you've made a mountain out of a molehill. First, many or most expression pedals are built the same way. Second, you should buy a TS and a TRS FLAT guitar patch cable. You can then butt the expression pedal right up to the TMP. "Problem" solved. Keep up the great videos!
@damionandy
@damionandy 6 месяцев назад
While it’s not a deal breaker, it’s a pain haha. I do need to get long flat cables, but it would be nice if I didn’t have to. I’m a software engineer and think a lot about user experience, so I’m a bit bias in my stance. But this is an easy remedy that cannot believe no one caught.

Thank you for sharing, Damion. I completely share your perspective. I sincerely hope that Fender will heavily invest in the TMP. I have a deep affection for my unit, and I don't want the TMP to follow in the footsteps of the Eleven Rack, which, in my opinion, is the most underrated amp simulator of all time. I still have my Eleven Rack, and I've compared it with my TMP. Despite being a technology that's 12 years old, it still holds up quite well, especially for high-gain tones. The software, "Eleven Editor," was truly impressive, even though it remained at version 1.0. Currently, I'm experimenting with my TMP by incorporating analog pedals through the FX loop, and so far, I'm quite satisfied with the results. This could be a topic worthy of a video discussion. Cheers from across the pond. Chris

I wish I could Chris, but I sold my pedals to buy the Tone Master Pro and don't regret it hahaha. The only pedal I have in my collection at this time is a EP Xotic Boost for my Deluxe Reverb haha. I believe they will. I have heard they are combating the Helix and have pledged 10 years of support for the TMP. I heard this from the Mission side of the house, so I don't know how valid it is. I will say that modeling is so hot right now in the gigging world that Fender would have to have some significantly different data to step away. Everyone wants a great sounding, light weight, portable rig for 99% of the players playing shows.

I've been using IRs for the Marshall amps, and I think it greatly improves them. I mainly choose the Leon Todd free IR and I have great Marshall tones. The TMP literally sits on top of my real JCM800 and near my DSL40CR and the tones are very similar.

Damion, I gotta say this “overall impressions” video got me down a bit. I love the tones i get from this - although i do agree about fender vs non fender (except JC) models sound accuracy, preset volumes, and need for a bit more spectral fidelity. I have a headrush prime which i like (but the tmp is still better) but your videos did a great job of getting me up to speed. I love the virtual capo idea! I’ve been a fender fanatic forever and i’m betting the unit capabilities will improve with firmware evolution. Hey Andy , thanks for the honesty about the TMP, quick question I have a Dunlop Cry Baby wah, can I connect it to the TMP and maybe control it?, with the fender Expression pedal only you can control some parameters like volume or so? can you set it like a wah? or if you want a wah effect you have use another pedal like the cry baby for example? thanks again
@damionandy
@damionandy 6 месяцев назад
You can use your wah if you use the loops on the back, 1 & 2 are analog, so you can accurately capture your Wah. The Expression pedal can control ANY parameter on any pedal or amp. This means you can use it as a wah, volume swell, gain control, etc.

Do you have a link for the seven string video? I would be curious to see what settings you were trying, What issues were seeming to be a roadblock in you achieving the tone that you were searching for... I'm typically all about using what is on board with a multi effects unit, But in this case I found it was hard to replicate some of the benefits of using stand alone pedals which is why I have resorted to using my horizon Precision drive to tighten things up and clean up the low end eq section when playing 7 and 8 string. I am currently putting together some patches that utilize parametric equalization at the very start of the signal chain to resolve these issues. Additionally, there is some clever use of dual microphones along with an additional signal cut on the cabinets. In order to get the clarity you need using the extended range instruments. This unit is really good. And I just think the software and some of our firmware needs to be updated to allow us to reach its full potential.
@damionandy
@damionandy 6 месяцев назад
I never posted it. I got frustrated and just quit (I also had finals last week haha). I started off with a 5 band EQ and pulled most of the low end out. I then ran it into a TS into a Friedman. The issue I was having was keeping the low end tight without making the high end tinny. I need to sit with it some more, but my complaint was I don't really have to work hard to get great 6 string tones on this unit, I was hoping to have the same result. I may have been overstressed with finals and over analyzing, maybe I'll give it another go. Do you have any tips?
@msi1985
@msi1985 6 месяцев назад
@damionandy yep agree most 6 string tones can be 80% complete in under 2 minutes, definitely takes a little more to build the 7 and 8 string versions. I personally didn't like Friedman for this purpose of use, I leaned towards the Mesa amps, handling it much better in terms of sonic quality the mark2 or dual recto both worked well. I'll post my 7 and 8 string patched to the cloud and link then here soon

Damion thanks for your output on this modeller. I decided to sell my quad cortex to move over to the TMP because I am a classic tone player but also amultinstrumentalist .. and I could really see potential in this unit.. I had real hopes for its flexibility with 2 x stereo effects loops and 2 inputs… 3 months in I am having no regrets about some of this units tones in comparison to the QC yet some regrets … mainly my issues are with flexibility I am a multi instrumentalists. And I am finding the TMP really limiting in its set up and Io and signal path . I want to use it for synth and vocals as well as guitar and bass and lapsteel . I am also hopeful that fender really look at these issues in your video and this feed . In addition to your thoughts I would like to see these limitations addressed and SOON not in two years like neural did with bitty , long winded updates. PLEASE FENDER…. Take some time engage the commmunity FIX THE TMP - stabilise the effects loops they are glitchy if you try and move them in the signal path for those of us who combine modellers with other outboard gear/ add pan and gain controls , make loops 1/2 switchable to line and be able to mOVE / Choose where they go in the chain . - why can I not use effects loops on the mic/ line signal path . I have expensive outboard effects I might want to use on synths and vocals in the mic/ line signal path .. this is driving me nuts ???? - make the main inputs switchable from instrument to line to make the unit more versatile for stereo inputs in the front end and more versatile in a home studio environment where you may combine with other gear such as synths. Or big box stereo effects Quad cortex got the right with 2 mic line inputs . The ultimate goal is 2 mic line inputs and 2 xx stereo effects loops fender have TMP have the inputs but then divided to limit how you can use them … WHY ? People don’t just use guitar modellers and floor units for playing guitar !,, - free the signal paths .. they are significantly limiting raise the flexibility of the unit across the board both internally with signal paths and externally by making the 6 wired inputs more flexible. - mastering … better EQ and compression / panning options at the end of combined signal paths . And before all outputs including headphones. - a level lock on the master s so you can adjust overall out put of all master volumes in relation to each other if they are not set equally. - the drive pedals are noisy when combined with amps… this should be one of the benefits of going digital compared to real world power and cabling and isolation issues. - missing models and cabs orange , train wreck , Revv , Morgan,Friedman , two rock , fender tweeds , blues driver. I would like to see you make videos combining other gear with the TMP. I hope you find some of the frustrations I have encountered and a conversation in the community Develops helping fender improve the flexibility f the TMP keep on trucking ❤

@@damionandy not me damion. I'm just a dedicated hobbiest . Tone hound . Not played live for nearly 20 years. . I have just noted that you are one of the few that are doing regular TMP content. And I have a lot I would say to fender about there product so I chipped in. Had a helix and QC. If fender don't fix the issues I see with the unit. I think I'll be ending my days with AXE FX . Going to give the TMP 1 year which is half the amount of time I gave the QC but if fender can't get this right with there capitol and experience I think that will be a booger fail than neural and the time it's taken to include the plugins as promised. Great content. I think if you want to find further videos start incorporating other gear and look at the unit as a centre piece in my opinion this is the big fail with all the modellers they need to look at there products as a mixer and switcher as well as amp modelling and capturing .. it is my opinion that the big winner will be the first modeller to include tubes. @@sandrews7760 fair enough haha. I do use the Tone Master Pro as a mixer for my Livestreams and how I usually record videos. For all the I/O you're using, you would really benefit from the AxeFx3. it's the top dog, it's only drawbacks are size and price; however, if you aren't gigging it, I leave mine on a desk with no issues haha. Just know you really need an FC6 (preferably the FC12) to really get the most out of it. My only issue about doing outboard gear with the TMP is I sold all my outboard gear BECAUSE of the TMP hahaha. Fender has had years to study the Kemper, Fractal, Helix, Quad Cortex and HeadRush floor modelers and the TMP should be a LOT further along with minimal issues. It should have come out of the gate running with the best but it's not the case. The TMP looks like it was rushed out without a lot of QC.

While my patch I've set up uses a external IR (Jerry Garcia tones) here is the problem with IR's from third party. They are only ONE setting unless the IR maker makes multiple IR's. Whereas, if Fender makes improvements to the cabs built in (which of course they will) one would want to use that because you can move and select different mics and placement. The unit is young. Let's give Fender time to make it better than it already is and dictated by user feedback.

I just loaded a bunch of tone factor ir’s on the tmp and it sounded much better with very little work. The better amps were even easier to get aggressive harder rock tones from. I spent the first few weeks just using stock cabs. Most of them are just a little too dark/muddy despite moving mics around and trying brighter mics. Also used the same ir’s on my quad cortex and had the same experience. I have tried many other ir’s in the past including York audio, ownhammer and these are right up there with the best of them (and I have zero affiliation with tone factor - just happened to watch one of their RU-vid videos 😉)

What this video tells me is - yeah, Fender might have updates that will eventually fix these issues - hopefully over the next year. But it's not YET ready for prime time - certainly not enough to shell out 1,700 smackers before they are resolved! And yet, obviously, this and similar gear is the future and it will only get a lot better - which is tremendously exciting. With all of the resources and incredible products now available, there's never been a better time to be a guitar player! And yet, we still have to spend wisely as we assess gear.

It's ready for Prime Time. A business can't leave the product on the shelf for a year. It's only software that is being updated. Hardware is a separate issue. The hardware was manufactured and is powerful and is ready. Having the customer do the USB update is brilliant. 30 amps and 90 effects to start is plenty.

@@QuoVadis88, yes, this might well turn out to be a fantastic product - but it's simply not there YET. Fender's business concerns, strategy, and the product's future potential are not why I shell out big dollars. I buy when a product is great NOW! As what's the rush? I'd rather wait until it's PROVEN to be worth my investment.

Fractal has had 10 years of updates and TMP might never catch up. So if all fossil fuel cars and tube amps are to be phased out then Fender has to get in the digital game at the high level. Fender already spent 4 years and big bucks and hiring the top guy from Helix. The TMP is a great product. I have one. It has enough stuff to make me happy to get started, 30 amps, 90 effects, lots of horsepower, I/O, UI, upgradeability, people want top end performance for Boss pedal prices. The R&D is ongoing. No business can wait years for a product to be perfect. No other modeler is perfect. Next year the standard will be higher so updates are necessary anyway for everybody. Why don't you work for Fender and show them how to run a large corporation. Show them what PROVEN means. For me, I can manage comfortably at home and on stage with the TMP now, Pete Thorn shows how the TMP shines. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NMAga0D-NnE.html@@philipatoz

I’ve played 13 gigs with it so far and a ton of livestreams with 0 issues. The point of this video was to show where it currently is and share my findings. As I mentioned in the video, it’s still my main “amp” for all my gigging needs. Don’t let the idea of having 3 amps scare you, I’ve gigged the last 2 years with only one amp haha. All you need is one good sound

When I think of the name Fender, I don't think Hi gain tones. I use an Axe Fx III and I can't see any reason to get anything else.

I hear you, I love the AxeFx3. I hate the UI, but it's grown on me. The reason why the AxeFx3 isn't the main rig for me is size and costs. I don't want to bring a rack mounted rig that's huge and costs over $3k to a gig paying me $200 haha

@@damionandy That's why Fractal makes the FM9.

@@TheCyberMantis the deal breaker for the FM9 was the I/O. It’s great for just guitar, but I enjoy being able to run a vocal chain through the TMP. The quad cortex was the unit I almost bought, but decided to jump on the TMP

@@damionandy That makes sense. Glad it's working for you.

Just for a second....Let remember the firmware is 1.1.**** The unit is literally a couple months old. They put an SD card slot in there that we can only speculate what it will do... Because...theres a roadmap. A roadmap that will also be user input considered.

I think in a years time, this is the no brainer unit. I haven’t turned on my AxeFx since it arrived.

The TMP needs two amp and effects chains on the screen instead of one so you can see everything without having to scroll left or right to see everything if you have a long chain. Your audio and visuals weren't up to your normal standards this time, washed out and no mic.

Same phone, different mic. I just used my iPhone mic this time around (My studio is a wreck after finals haha), but thanks for keeping me honest!
