Started using Ableton only because the tutorials I was watching were using Ableton too. After 8 years of using it, I still haven't even scratched the surface of what it's capable of, because I've stopped exploring further. Thanks for making me see it as a wondrous "toy" again 😄😄

In Ableton I like to make my own synths. Not with Max4Live, but rather combining sounds/synths into one. Let's say you want a synth where you can play 3 different kind of sounds at once (eg.: lead, bass and something else in the middle to fill out the space). You can easily make those 3 sounds in the default Operator, Meld, Wavetable synths or any other VST plugin you want. Once you made the first sound, you can actually group itself, and you can add the two next synth instances below. Once I'm done with the sounds, I usually add some post processing and effects, which I then map to macros (you can add as many you'd like!) and hide all the elements. At the end I'm basically left with a great sounding box of parameters without seeing all the other technical stuff! Also once you set up something like this, you can randomize the macros with the "r" button on the top (this also works with drums/sounds inside Drum Rack) so you have endless possibilities. Hope this was interesting and that you will try it out :)

@@WhoIsAlexElliottonce you dive into the chain selector for instrument and effect racks everything kinda explodes. The possibilities with this daw are truly endless. Also, the drum rack has its own send/return inside of it, so you can do parallel compression, add reverb and all the stuff ON THE SAME CHANNEL, but in parallel. It’s nuts. Also, you can select individual samples out of a drum rack for side chain inputs!

you said the keyword....MODULAR, cause that is exactly the feeling i had when i started using it, that combined with a push and everything is laid out on the knobs, crazy, making an audio track into a melody midi track or harmony or even drum track ,experimentation is around the corner then, i use live for 10 years or something and i still find new ways to do things.

In really like Ableton, the clip view it’s so useful, and I love the simplicity of how the effects are shown alongside the arrangement. The only thing my brain struggles with it the horizontal fx chain. The FL format of a vertical stack of FX on the mixer just makes more sense to me. Maybe I will revisit it again on the future. I do wish they used a similar model to FL of pay once rather than having to pay for further upgrades, but a minor point.

My absolute favourite feature in Ableton is the fact that once I hit A for automation (same as Logic which is helpful), I can hit any parameter inside my plugin or effect and automatically it shows up in the automation lane! It's SO intuitive!!!

I used Logic 9 for a while. Was very frustrated with the workflow. I decided just for the hell of it to install a Ableton Live Lite that had come bundled with an audio interface. I worked on that for about 5 minutes and decided to switch DAWS. Eventually got the full version. Been using Live for 10 years now.

my favorite feature of ableton is the automation hands down it's soooooo simple to modulate parameters in plugins and more often than not ableton labels them correctly, I've been using ableton since 2015 and haven't regretted switching from FL all those years ago, ableton has a funny way of making complex tasks easy and more doable, I find it's like an extension of my body at this point now that I have the shortcuts burned into my brain. I feel like, while ableton isn't the best looking DAW it's not there for looks, it's there to help you get stuff done and I love it cause it doesn't get in my way in the same way that a DAW like Logic or FL Studio would. However, I gotta say I'm not trying to drag these other daws down, at the end of the day it doesn't matter what DAW you use so long as you can do what you want to do in it. The tools don't matter, the DAW is just a means to an end. But I'm glad you gave ableton a fair shot.
@WhoIsAlexElliott

Dope video and welcome to the Ableton fam. Consider this: Ableton has trouble delay compensating within efffect chains. So let's say you have Pro L2 in your chain, introducing latency (shown in the bottom left as ms), if you put a kickstart/shaperbox/lfo tool/tremolator or anything like that after it, the timing will be off. But once you know, you can work around it with midi triggers.
@WhoIsAlexElliott
@WhoIsAlexElliott 13 дней назад
So I realised that about limiter. And I just keep it off the master of the season now until the end. Luckily most of my set up is Pulsar modular stuff which is running great latency wise.
@mingofaas5809
@mingofaas5809 13 дней назад
@@WhoIsAlexElliott What I meant is a little different. Let's say you have track with a pad sound and you use a linear phase Pro Q3, which introduces 116.1 ms of latency. Then you add a kickstart to duck it. This kickstart ducking will not be in synch to the rest of the project, but 116.s ms off. So the timing of the pad itself is correct, but the timing of the ducking is off. This is different from the way other DAWs like logic handle latency within the effect chain of a track. You can test this easily with the Pro Q3 in linear phase or any other effects that introduce additional latency (example all the Soundtoys, all Arturia FX, all UAD FX to name a few). Hope this made it clear :)
@WhoIsAlexElliott
@WhoIsAlexElliott 13 дней назад
@@mingofaas5809 sorry yes it made sense to me. This latency issue is present even with the master limiter on the end of my chain because Elevates adds over 100ms of latency also. So I realised very quickly to use low latency stuff only and actually found myself just using the built in Abelton FX and really loving them! I think I’ll just have to go back to respecting mastering as a separate thing again. I like Ableton to run in a way where at any point I can play something in without latency.

Just ran across this video and your channel. I will subscribe and look into more of your content. I love your attitude and your energy about music creation. I feel the same way just playing around in Ableton Live and for sometime now I have been wondering about picking up Logic and giving it a go. So far I have resisted as I can't say that I lack anything for music creation within Live -- just curious about Logic and will, still, probably try it out. But in relation to what you asked. I have gotten pleasing results with the Arpeggiator. For one example, I loaded a grand piano (one six-note chord) and placed the Arpeggiator before that and the Random generator before the Arp. I chose "Diverge" for style and played with the Random settings until I got something I liked. Next I added the Autofilter, the Delay and the Reverb and played with those until I was satisfied. Then I added an LFO to modulate various parameters. Lots of fun and in the end a very usable musical result. Don't want to go on too long here, but just to add, besides building Max For Live devices there are lots of incredible free and for-purchase devices out there already. Check out Max For Live devices that are already included in Ableton Live Suite for a start. Since you mentioned the "modular" feel of Ableton eventually check out something like Kit by Fors. They make great Max devices but at a cost. All the best.

there's an effects chain and a drum rack you can use. i think you can use the drum rack as a sampler. i haven't tried it but it should be doable. also you can map almost anything to your keyboard, or to your midi controller. you don't have to go into the settings, mess around, figure out how to create a shortcut, use a key combination that doesn't already exist. you can just press the key or midi map button at the top of the daw, click on something on the screen, click on a button on your keyboard or midi controller, click the key or midi map button to disable that mode. and for the rest of that session, you can use whatever button you pressed to toggle or control that parameter that you selected. almost anything can be mapped.

@@WhoIsAlexElliott it is auto settings for things like density, length, etc... try each option for what seems to work best and produces the midi you are looking for. People like to say that they prefer Ableton because it has better workflow, better creative plugins, better browser etc. But I don't believe it's any of those reasons why people enjoy it so much. There is something almost magical about Ableton or perhaps how the audio engine processes sound and timing. You can suck at making music and somehow, no matter what you throw at Ableton, the results are musically convincing. In some way, the melodies sound better, the beats groove almost effortlessly. Imo, It's the most forgiving DAW for those who lack musical talent. After many years of using both logic and Ableton, I cannot figure out what it is. In logic, you gotta work much harder to get something going that sounds good. I'm a happy logic user, but if I ever wanted to impress someone with a quick beat, I'd most definitely fire up Ableton. German voodoo.

Thanks for your post. I posted a similar comment a few weeks ago and I got the usual replies that all DAWs sound the same (null tests prove it, blah blah blah). If I finish a song in Logic and post it to social media or wherever then 9/10 it will sound inferior in some way. If I do the same with Ableton then it just sounds better, almost professional, yet I've gone through exactly the same process. Logic is a hard DAW to work with in my opinion. I'm convinced it has something to do with transients. Logic seems to hide them where as Ableton makes them stand out from the get go.

I’ve been using logic for 10+ years. There are so many issues i feel Apple are just not addressing like the browser. Half of my samples don’t even playback because they are too ‘short’ or start too early for logic to process so I have to use the finder to browse presets sometimes. I have the M3 Max 16 core Mac Pro with 2Tb so all my samples and sounds are stored locally - but I still run into issues and buffering and clipping when one of the processing cores peak. For some reason, they only allow us to use some of the cores for logic. They need to unlock the full potential of the computer! 😀

I hate the look of Ableton but the workflow is second to none and its stock sounds are great. The fact that the EQ, dynamics and effects are open and visible on each track massively speeds things up and the range of effects is staggering. I’m an M1 Mac user and Logic runs well albeit with its quirky glitches. Sadly, I’ve had many problems with Ableton which seems to crash regularly and I often have to go hunting for a track in Finder because Ableton has lost the link to it (my most stable platform is Reason). Good luck with your journey and I look forward to hearing the results.

Yeah man. I've been in Logic Pro for over 5 years and hated Ableton. Tried Ableton lite hated it so much. After awhile I kept watching tutorials and most were in Ableton and that's when I started to really see their plugins and finally realized I should just get it because it seems if you want to make electronic music then you need Ableton or FL Studio. I got Ableton last October in time to get the free update to 12. Now I'm sitting here wondering why I didn't just get Ableton from the beginning. It's Ableton's workflow that makes it so superior too, everything makes sense. If you're out to make electronic music working with samples and midi then Ableton is the best way to go. Logic just isn't that great for midi even though they're practically similar in so many ways. Not to mention Max for live devices and the fact that you can get into making your own plugins is the sprinkles and cherry on top. I absolutely LOVE Ableton Live. I call it Ableton even though it's actually called Live.
@WhoIsAlexElliott
@WhoIsAlexElliott 13 дней назад
Haha never knew it was called live. But that makes sense cause ableton is the company who also make push and max for live etc 😅🙌. It seems I had the same journey as you. @WhoIsAlexElliott
@WhoIsAlexElliott 12 дней назад
It isn’t true. It just requires and understanding of clipping. I did a video touching on clipping the low end on my channel. Video link: How To Get Insane Bass: Pulsar Modular P44 Magnum: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uHn7_NjjUo8.html Also if you want the fruit clipper sound then get “Orange Clip” www.schwabedigital.com/ Many people will try to convince you otherwise but it’s not true. The major FL studio producers send their stems to mix engineers who then go and use pro tools. But the main aggressive sound is from the clipper which has been recreated in that product. Make sure your Ableton sampler is set to the highest quality setting so your drums don’t loose quality. Decap did a video on it. Video link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h4T5X29-UF8.htmlfeature=shared Skrillex has some of the best mixes you’ll ever hear. All done in Ableton.

@@WhoIsAlexElliott Freeze and Flatten track is another one worth mapping via the MacOS shortcuts, it is strange that they added the option as a menu shortcut in Live 12 and then didn't give it a keyboard shortcut, but they did finally add a keyboard shortcut to just Freeze track after years of people asking for it. The inconsistency of the keyboard bindings in places is just one of them things you kind of have to put up with, every bit of software has its own quirks. I assume you have realised that the top right button key mappings are specific to a project. It is well worth using a project template that has stuff you use all the time pre-mapped. There are a couple of useful things that you can map to keyboard, which may not initially be that obvious, but which I find very useful. 1. Timeline locators (markers) can be mapped to a key, so the play head jumps to the locator, I have a start and end locator in my template with keys bound to them so I can easily jump to the beginning or end of the track. You can also bind the little left and right arrows at the top right of the arrangement pane, which jump forwards and backwards between locators. 2. The little spanner button at the top of VST/AU devices which shows/hides the plugin window can be mapped to a key to show and hide the plugin. Importantly this key binding works even when the track containing the device isn't the currently selected track. So if you have a device, say on the main track, which you want to open regularly but don't want to keep switching to the main track and then back to the track you are working on, you can get to it with a key press. I use this for example for visualisation plugins, i.e. loudness meter, tonal balance control etc. Finally, who can remember all these keyboard shortcuts really? As you are a youtuber I guess it is likely you have a stream deck; if so create some pages to control Ableton using that. Particularly, you can create a multi-action to search the browser for a specific plugin and add it straight to the track, so you can have your most frequently used plugins just one button click away. It takes a bit of effort to set up initially, but it has been well worth it for me.

Bro you need a blog or to give lessons. This was extensive and extremely helpful! I realise about the template and key mapping. I would start new project and be like where my mapping go loool. But I now have it set in my template. Mapping the spanner to an LuFs meter is a great idea and also I really need to map freeze to be like logics bounce in place. That’s going to be so Good!

i was gonna say, i've been using ableton as a digital mixer with built in modulation as a plugin host for looping and textural guitar stuff for years and it's really great as a sound design platform. i'll give you a free tip now - the vocoder. absolutely brilliant. put a drum loop on a track and place the vocoder after it. put a pad on another track and select in in the vocoder as the "carrier". then play with the formant and the depth. try different sounds and combinations (i've used speech in the past to great effect)

@@WhoIsAlexElliott nice. also try, instead of a drum loop, a single long hit or punch and loop it every two or four bars with a bright pad as the carrier. let me know what you think! and thanks for the tip on OTT. just tried it and my sub thanks you! :)

@Simeon_Harris 12 дней назад
sorry forgot to say - you don't want to hear the synth pad track at all, so you can change it's output to "sends only" and it will be muted, but the audio will still be passed to the vocoder.

Logic is better or mixing, but I find FL Studio and Abeleton are better for creating tracks.

No it's not. People don't know how to utilize chains in Ableton. I think you may find that Live is just as good at mixing if not better than Logic. Due to the fact you can create these big chains including a dry signal just like how you use sends but it's on the track itself allowing you to parallel process the track without even running it through a send or return track.

If you’re making organic sounding stuff like pianos, strings and stuff then I get what you mean. If you’re making electronic music though the instruments are ELITE, and possibilities endless. But it’s not as good a preset browser as logic for sure, it’s certainly a create from Scratch kind of DAW and that’s what I love most about it. I never use logics built in sounds but have an extensive kontakt and spitfire audio collection so built in Orestes hasn’t ever been a deciding factor for me but more so general creativity and possibilities. I COMPLETELY understand if your after great presets then it’s isn’t the best choice. Logic is

@@WhoIsAlexElliott Oh yeah the browser alone kills Logic. What's up with that shit? Logic'c browser sucks a big fat one. Max for Live you can also make instruments, Midi Effects, AND devices for the Generative Midi that are in the new piano roll. Check out the Bouncy Notes plugin in the Midi Effects section. Like Logic seriously can't do any of this, like not even a recreate of something like Bouncy Notes. I feel sorry for people trying to make electronic music in any other DAW and FL Studios just doesn't have the same workflow. Isn't it really exciting? I'm trying to learn M4L now and it's not easy but it is set up so you don't need to know code in order to start crafting your own, Audio Effects, Midi Effects, Generative Midi, Instruments. Absolutely LOVE Live. Edit: Also get Duck Buddy, it's a free M4L device. It's actually better than Kick Start2. Has Lookahead that get's rid of those Clicks notorious in LFO Tool.
