I was taking photos on a granite beach two weeks ago with my Olympus EPL-7. There was a guy there with a Nikon which had about $5000 worth of bazooka glass bolted to the front of it. He got tons of unwanted attention and kept getting pestered by passersby wanting to talk about his kit, or people just simply stopping and gawping. Meanwhile I was able to peacefully enjoy taking photos with my small, unobtrusive MFT camera that no-one really paid any attention to. High quality stealth.

I can recall in the 1970s as a professional wedding photographer using a Leica m3 with a 35mm summilux lens, the front element measuring less than 3cms. I was invariably surrounded by guests trying to impress with their Nikons, Practicas etc sporting bulky optics, all waving gently in the breeze, desperate to appear super cool and looking askance at my diminutive, solitary rangefinder. The fact that my "gear" would be delivering superbly sharp images was all that mattered. I had the means and the method, the latter being the crucial element.

I recently switched from Sony E to an OMD EM1-MkII and love the camera. I have a 12-100 f4 lens that would be monster on a full frame camera (24-200) and just couldn't be happier. I don't care who the parent company is I just want quality products and support.

M43 is far from dead. It’s a mature, extremely sophisticated platform with an astounding lens ecosystem. I have finally completed my prime lens collection that spans from 7.5mm to 75mm. This collection encompasses four different manufacturers (Panasonic, Olympus, Sigma and Laowa). Add a 100-400 zoom from PanaLeica and four different Lumix bodies (plus an LX100 as EDC/backup) and I have a no compromise system which fits in a comfortably portable bag. I carry this setup almost all the time and everywhere. My only concern is wearing out mechanical shutters. I’m shooting more than I ever have in my life with cameras which serve my attempts to capture my vision beautifully. If this is a dead system, give me more.

I found the Pan GM1 too small and fiddly so I traded it (I kinda wish I hadn't now). I did consider the fast LX but settled on the tiny Oly E-PL7 which is only fractionally bigger than a GM5. The E-PL7/8 are the last of the series that can take the VF4 electronic viewfinder, and unlike the new E-P7 have a metal body. They do lack a second wheel atop so you have to push buttons to set up. Sometimes I do not want to carry the half brick size G9 or GH4 and will opt for the much smaller E-M5ii or the even less obtrusive E-PL7. Do we need all the bells and whistles of the latest cameras? - not always. Regarding shutter life - I must have taken over a million of shots on my GH4, I can shoot over 1000 per day when in use (most of them rubbish), but I've had that since 2014 and the shutter works just fine with none of the problems associated with a certain Nikon. If you think the Leica 100-400 is big, try finding a hernia inducing 4/3 Sigma 50-500 (The original Bigma), it will even AF although it is like a shuttle on a factory loom, and inaccurate.

If there was a limited selection of M43 lenses, perhaps M43 might eventually die. But that’s not the case: there is a robust selection of high-quality glass, and from multiple sources. I don’t see people just throwing that away, as much as some full-frame fanboys seem to wish. Will M43 dominate the “professional” niche? It never has, and yet there are plenty of professionals (still) singing its praises. In fact, the GH5 seems to have a place of importance in video circles. I think worrying about M43 longevity is wasted energy: better to get out and shoot. That’s what photographers do, isn’t it?

I had concerns for the future of M4/3 because of inherent limitation of resolution and low light performance. However with Gigapixel AI, Topaz de-noise, PS enhanced resolution and now LR super-resolution, these issues are now taken care of. I find the dynamic range fine for my purposes and the deeper DoF is an advantage for my kind of photography. I was poised to jump ship at one stage, but now happy to say on board, with my compact system and wide range of professional standard Olympus lenses.

I bought into the MFT's system around 2015 when I needed one camera that would do both video and stills. I was planning several trips to Alaska, one in the winter and one in the summer. I didn't want to be loaded down with a heavy camera bag because some of it was going out in the country. I settled on the G7. I thought I was going to give up some performance to my FF cameras but was very pleased with the quality of the images and short videos I was able to make. During the winter trip, I was up living in a cabin close to Denali and I never had any problem with poor battery life even when the temperature was -10F shooting long exposure northern lights. Back in Anchorage, I had no problem shooting videos of the sled dog races during the Fur Rondy. In the summer, it was nice to carry a very light backpack on the trails even though I had a variety of lenses in the pack.

Same. Has been my only system (GF2...GX1...EM10...GX9...G81) over the last decade and lot's of fun with both LUMIX/OLY lenses plus a small army of vintage glass (w/focal reducers) from Nikkor, Takumar, Canon, Helios, Jupiter...etc. I am an enthusiast, but even many pro's swear by the convenience/portability of M4/3 outside of the comforts of a studio. I really do not need over 20MP and frankly, with the right lens and/or mono/tripod, I can manage the golden hour and low light quite well. As far as I am concerned, the more negative the press...the better the prices!!!!!

I have been a Nikon user for 9 years, Fuji and Canon before that, but have been looking at the MFT system for a while. My interest was initially sparked by Steve O'Nions who is basically a film photographer but has been using and advocating MFT for some time. D. Griff also interested me in the system, and as a landscape photographer he demonstrated how well the system worked for this genre. James Popsys was also an influence, as well as your goodself. The late David Thorpe was the person who finally convinced me to try the system. Two days ago I received from B&H my new GX9 and G9. The GX9 came with a kit 12-60mm lens, and the G9 was body only. I hadn't intended to buy the GX9 but could not buy a lens only Lumix 12-60mm, my initial choice of lens for the system. Everyone is out of stock of this lens, and likely to be so for a while. When available the lens is $495 + tax. It was, however, available as a kit lens with the GX9 for $795; So in effect, I got my GX9 for approx $300. A bargain I could not resist, as it will be my camera of choice when cycling. I sold some of my Nikon APS-C stuff privately, and traded the rest of it in, which financed all but $25 of the transaction. I am excited to discover the limits of this system, and will add lenses as and when funds permit. I kept my Nikon D810 along with several lenses, including an F4 24-120mm, which is usually kept on the camera. I had picked the Lumix 12-60mm because I find this focal length so useful. Seeing the G9 with this lens on, alongside the D810 with it's same focal length lens mounted, brought home to me quite dramatically the size and weight difference. it is one thing to look at numbers on a spec.list and quite another to actually feel the difference in bulk and weight. I think MFT does have future, and I have bought into it thinking I am surely not the only aging photographer who has wanted a lighter backpack. The demographic may yet prove the systems savior. Stranger things have happened, eg look at the resurgence in film photography.

Morning to you and all the micro four thirds community! I almost took the plunge and part exchanged my Fujifilm gear for a second hand OMD1 mark ii with the fantastic 20mm lens. Straight swap! It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve made in my photographic story. I adore the micro four thirds system, especially the enormous selection of second hand lenses. The ability to build a complete kit, was and still is a strong appeal especially from someone in the Fujifilm system. Did I make the right decision? I’m still not sure. In my opinion the new OM gear (brings back film images) was already in the pipeline before they sold off the imaging part of the company. But the fact that they were released, at all is very encouraging. The news from the Panasonic camp too. The video makers fro sure will keep this company’s product line continuing.. Nothing is guaranteed in any company, however The micro four thirds guy is here to stay! Thanks as always for the great content, given in your own style! P.S. I’m still on the fence!

I have been with micro 4/3 since my first Lumix GF1 and 20mm 1.8. I've had many since then - GX1, LX100, Pen F, GH5, EM-5 Mk II, EM1 Mk II and have loved the small size portability, excellent quality and just plain fun that they provide. I am currently playing with the Lumix S1 full frame and am enjoying the larger and cleaner files for stills and video. There is a system for everyone, but we must thank the micro 4/3 alliance that brought us so many mirrorless technologies - the digital EVF, IBIS, and 4K recording - that all digital cameras share today.

I have owned Olympus for 13 years now and from 4/3 I switched to Micro4 / 3, it is an ideal system for my needs and Olympus has done a lot to increase the quality of its products and today the m4 / 3 system is a mature system with a wide choice of products. I hope for a new sensor that doesn't give me 30-40 Mpixel but that improves the dynamic range and noise, and a slightly more performing viewfinder. I love Olympus ps: excellent considerations congratulations

I like your energy and positivity. Around here in the colonies (🇨🇦 😆) the guys at the local camera store let me know MFT is still alive and well. Many shooters - myself included - like to run 2 systems. MFT is popular as a lighter, more portable option for full frame shooters. The choice doesn’t have to be either/or in photography. Even in the film days many of us shot both medium format and 35 mm.

I've seen people absolutely trashing the new EP7 for missing an EVF. I can understand that its a hinderance during very bright sunlight, but I usually find myself leaving the EV4 off my PEN E-P5 and enjoy taking quick snaps in success with the vertical tilteable screen. I think they are looking to attract a younger crowd that want something pocketable, stylish, with a decent set of affordable lenses (They are including the 45mm prime 1.8 in an offer I've seen). 5 axis stab means video handheld will be miles ahead of other brands, again great for vloggers and influencers who do walk and talks. This camera is for casual shooters and influencers plainly put. It also so happens to be, what I believe the PEN series to be, one of the most usable and fun formats of a camera I've ever used. My E-P5 is great ergonomically, fast, and its size makes it so much easier grab instead of my EM1 Markiii. One big hurdle for OMD is not convincing its existing customers to buy the EP7, but to attract a whole other demographic of customers that they missed in the past.

Since I don't pixel peep, nor create prints larger than DIN A3, nor heavily crop my shots, there is absolute no reason for a camera with a larger sensor than MFT to me. The undoubtedly better performance of larger sensors in extrem low light situations or high MP data gathering are useless to me, because I won't take advantage of that. Price, size, weight of a top performance MFT system can't be beaten by larger sensor cameras, and that is actually relevant to me. For me, MFT is simply the best compromise between camera ergonomics, camera costs and camera performance. It even has some serious advantages over larger sensors for instance in wild life photography. I'm sure that many other photographers do see that similarly, and thus there will always be a market for MFT. And if not, it wouldn't bother me that much. I don't feel any need at all for a "better" MFT camera compared to what I have already (a Pen F and shortly a M-1 II). If the production would stop today, I have what I wish for and what I want and need, and the cameras and lenses I have will last for decades to come. Besides that, when I need to do "serious" photography, I take my medium format film cameras or my large format cameras out. There you can experience differences to MFT which truly are significant and do matter.

Robert, i think you underestimate how well m4/3 really is. Until 1 year ago i used the E - P5 with non pro lenses and i made every year a calender on A2 format. Those pictures are tack sharp. (If taken well).1 year ago i upgraded to M5 mkiii with 1 pro lens. I think you can make really large prints that are excellent in iq. No worries at all. The new P7 will deliver if handled well.
@Dahrenhorst
@Dahrenhorst 3 года назад
@@dirkvanhoorn2105 Just the contrary. I know that I easily could print A2 prints. I just haven't had the need or the wish to do that. Comparing a MFT print with a FF print practically no one can see a difference. But everyone can see the differences between a photo coming out of a digital camera and a film camera. And within film cameras, you can very well see the difference of an A3 picture coming from 35mm film or a medium format film. So if you want the look and feel of film on a A3 picture in an acceptable quality you need to use medium format at least. My largest camera, and my favorite one which I use most, is an 11x14 large format camera. With that you get something close to A3 as a contact print. You won't see the difference of a portrait done with a MFT or a FF digital camera in an A3 print. But you very easily see the differences of a portrait done with the MFT camera, a medium format film camera or the 11x14 beast on A3. And that's even more true when you enlarge or print larger than A3.

Thanks for informative update & nice to see someone on YT still committed to MFT as ranks have thinned. The MFT future, IMHO, is somewhere between doom & gloom from critics & optimism you describe. To me, term "Full Frame" [FF] is one of the greatest marketing gimmicks ever. Who wants to purchase "Micro" or alphabet soup like APSC when you can have FF for around the same price? To camera makers' credit, they have introduced mirrorless FF bodies--Nikon Z5 & Panasonic S5--at same size, cost & weight of crop sensor cameras. Now as photographers, we know the term FF is misleading & based on the old 35mm standard; and regardless of camera size, FF lenses will almost always carry significantly more size, cost, & weight than MFT equivalents. Although FF sounds so good & in world of marketing & sound bites: Who wants to discuss equivalence? While I cannot predict things, I know the market will determine whether & how long MFT continues. Yes Panasonic has talked of a MFT future, but my sense is that will mainly focus on video makers & intro cameras like the G100. For Olympus, who knows, although intro of a pro lens indicates some commitment as you stated? Matti Sulanto, although no longer a Lumix Ambassador, commented recently that not much has happened in MFT since intro of Olympus EM1 Mk ii which I thought was fair statement. Yes there's been new products, but how meaningful or much of an advance? My sense is the lack of newer sensors has slowed changes in MFT system. Maybe we'll know more at EOY with intro of GH6? In the meantime, I'll enjoy my MFT gear 🙂.

I enjoy the M43 environment although it was not my first digital camera system. Also not being a professional photographer and with limited budget, I still managed to acquire an Olympus E-PL1, an older Olympus 43 DSLR camera just for the lens, as well as 2 GX85s, a G7, and a new G95. I like them all. I also have some Sony APS-C cameras, Nikon and Canon APS-C cameras, and 2 Nikon full frame, one DSLR and one Mirrorless. Perhaps when I retire I will do some more photography with all of my cameras. When I go to Europe next year to visit my new grandson, I will strongly consider just taking the G95 and at least one GX85 with a small assortment of lenses. Most of my cameras and lenses came used from pawn shops and I especially like using old vintage manual glass with adapters to the M43 cameras. The G95 I did buy new though. I enjoy photography and M43 is a large part of my hobby, smaller and lighter weight and adapted vintage glass, who could ask for more.

Years ago Kodak made the disc camera. Now it had poorer image quality, lots of shortcomings, but frankly I loved the shape and pocket sized, thin, I liked the nature of it, the way they processed and numbered the images and gave you a contact sheet. It was just a fun thing to use and thin and nice sized. I like old 35mm stuff, I like all the new stuff. M43 is a very nice size that will produce really great results. I have used it for years in real estate photography and frankly it was years ahead of other systems for quite some time. I the G9, GH3, GH2, and an old epl something that IS broke. The problem m43 faces is a smaller camera market for all ILC cameras, things are dominated by smart phones. That means they can't sell as many as they did and the opportunity to grow sales is poor. So, the economics for manufacturers is more precarious. However, if properly marketed and with good quality and advancements I see no reason m43 could not have a niche for at least a while more. The future in the long run depends on sales, profits and products. I remain hopeful, but just like a beloved pet dog who is finally very well trained and very well mannered - the life left in it may be short. The market today is vastly different, that is the reality. Everything has a beginning a middle and an end. I would buy a Pen F II if they really upgraded it. They need to target better. I bought an EM10 IV not long ago, it is a nice little camera.

I would say we are in the process of return to the situation 30+ years back. At those times, the technique of chemical process (it is not "analog", especially when talking about B&W photography, which is perfectly digital: silver grain has zero transmitance, film foil has "full" (1) transmitance) was almost fully matured and only progress could be done in autofocus and metering systems. Almost nobody with the exception of pros and several junkies used that hi-end gear - most of general population used fixfocus boxes focused at hyperfocal distance, with 35 mm focal distance and one shutter speed, diaphragm was mostly fixed, too. Dynamic range of the modern films did the trick. Some people bought more expensive compact cameras with real autofocus and sometimes zoom lens, with real metering, real shutter speed/diaphragm automation. Very few people used cameras with interchangeable lenses and these systems were almost untouched for decades (even today it is hard to beat many old lens designs). With the introduction of digital photography, some (many) computer junkies began to think the expertise of skilled photographer is possible to substitute by computer programs and basically photography is about tech specs. We all photographers knew it is not the case, but non-photographers were lured into a marketing trap of repeated acquisitions and system changes instead of mastering skills. After 15-20 years it is finally clear to everyone with a few exception it is - again - not about the gear, we already have reasonable sufficient systems for most applications. Those fixfocus people now have their smartphones (and the results are way better than from the film cameras) and are happy, we "higher level hobbyists" and pros have real cameras. Taking into account already sufficient enough gear, the manufacturers in future will have smaller and smaller chance to lure us to buying something not different (better) enough than already existing systems. What is quite interesting for me, 40 years ago we had tens of manufacturers, often making quite niche cameras and all of them were able to survive. Nowadays it seems like there is no place for more than maybe 5 if not less manufacturers. Boom of sales at the beginning of digital era was an outlier (and it was clear to many it is the case - real skills are impossible to substitute; good shot is not about correct exposure and precise focusing). The bubble finally popped.

@@tulenik71 Interesting thoughts. I would say your mention of more manufacturers in the past may have been due to the centralization of manufacturing in Japan and that cameras were less sophisticated. So, you could make a box and then put it together with all kinds of parts from subcontractors who were eager to sell what they made. Today cameras are far more complex and basically every camera now has to include the film. Sensor suppliers and technology is a big part of making basically a specialized computer we now use as a camera. So, perhaps startup costs and product sophistication and far-flung suppliers and markets has eroded the possibility for competition among businesses. The scale of production can no longer be small. Additionally, video functions add a new layer of complexity. Whatever the situation Canon saw it coming and you can see how they adjusted and remained profitable, Nikon is not doing so well. Oly is a victim of organized crime, financial fraud and market decline - hard for any company to survive. I do feel Panasonic is well run though, or so it seems to me. I think we will see high end expensive, some prosumer and some starter type things forever. But some players will be very niche like Pentax, Ricoh, Sigma. Hard to forecast, if I were betting, it would be on Canon, SONY, Fuji, as best bets mid term. Who can say, but things always change. Any company can Kodak itself to death easily.

I'm deeply invested into MFT, and I agree with your assessment. Furthermore, we shouldn't underestimate the engagement of other producers beyond Olympus and Panasonic, especially in the area of lenses. Some may say, those are cheap and just riding the wave (well, some of them certainly aren't cheap, not even inexpensive). But I say, some of these lenses really are gems, and they allow another path of entry into MFT and its full compatibility across cameras and lenses. What I find interesting is the decision on markets where Olympus positions the E-P7 for now and where not ... it's in line with market reactions to MFT in general, I think. Hmm ...

I think I recall that JIP announcefld they were planning to use the Olympus name in the shorter term, to establish continuity, before full conversion to OMDS. The underproduction of the 100-400 worried me a bit, in that there was not a robust positivity in making big numbers available. Lastly, their stripping down log the Vaio brand to budget, only. All that said, I think it has more security than mirrored SLR.

No other camera format has the combination of quality, size and weight that meets my needs. It looks to me that the major camera companies have surveyed the future camera market ($$) and decided that to stay in business and sustain their future they must focus on the top end of the market where the money is. As a result they are producing professional cameras with full specs and large and expensive lenses. So you have it, as I see it, you have two alternatives; micro 4/3, that provides affordable professional high quality camera systems versus the top end of the market with its much higher cost and physical size. In pointing this out I an not knocking the top end cameras or those that buy them, but for a large portion of photographers, micro 4/3 provides and will continue to provide a fully professional alternative that given the current market will only grow as new entry photographers make their selections. These new entry level photographers are being priced out of the top end of the camera market and will settle in nicely with micro 4/3 cameras. So I believe micro 4/3 camera will not die and may see increased growth as the camera market divides into two camps of users. Only the future will tell.

I have some of my doubts about the pricing argument. While some lenses like the Olympus 300mm f/4 or the 40-150mm f/2.8 beat out the likes of 600mm f/4 and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses on FF systems, the prices for other lenses still remain relatively high. A brand new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk III costs the same as a Sony A7III or a Panasonic Lumix S5. Meanwhile, some of the FF manufacturers are releasing f/4 zooms that cost about as much as Olympus' f/4 zooms. The cost argument is starting to really be lost now. And I'm not sure everyone really wants to talk about how the Olympus 150-400 f/4.5 TC ×1.25 is about a fifth of the cost of a FF equivalent when the likes of the Olympus 25mm f/1.2 isn't that much better priced than 50mm f/1.2 on a FF system.

I've lost count of how many times I've jumped on the WEX website and costed up FF equivalents of my M43 gear (G9 and all Leica glass). Only to come to the same conclusions: I don't want the weight, there will be no leap in quality, its not worth the money and invariably I will be leaving behind LUMIX features that I actually like and use eg. focus stacking, high res modes and sublime video. I've just bought the 8-18mm and will continue to invest in M43.
@vaska00762
@vaska00762 3 года назад
There are two things where MFT falls short, and that's in high ISO performance and resolution performance. Even with bright lenses and IBIS, I sometimes have to jump up to ISO 1000 and above in overcast days to just keep a shutter speed above 1/1000. This isn't an everyday use case, but it is a common use case for things like sports, wildlife and the like, where you want to capture a fleeting moment. When it comes to resolution, the thing that comes to mind is that if you're viewing images on a digital medium, then 20mp is still overkill. 4k is only 8 megapixels, yet in certain situations, having the higher resolution gives you either the ability to print on large objects or crop your images in post without any real loss in quality. I sometimes do think that FF has something to offer, but it's at a cost of either user preferences (Nikon, for example, use an anticlockwise focus and zoom ring, and no fully articulated screen on X), overall price (the Canon R6 is obscene) or have some other strange things going on (Panasonic Lumix S cameras still don't have phase detection AF). Maybe in a a year or two, I might look into an FF camera, maybe even something like the Sigma fp as a system that complements what MFT stuff I have, but doesn't replace it.

In Japan the EP7 is aimed at ladies who prefer to use cameras as they use their phones. The EP is for the EPL what the Em10 MklV is for the other EM10: a 20MP high performance version. It has no viewfinder and no PD on sensor but other then that is a clone for that female public looking for the smallest possible camera to keep inside a fashion bag, possibly with a collapsible 14-42 kit lens which will probably be bundles with the camera. It adds all the video improvement if the EM counterpart but lacks in AF. The EP was a high end M43 up to the 5 but now if the format will ever be resurrected it will be probably a Pen-F premium line, which would make sense today if built properly as the EM have been pretty lackluster in that department since the MkIII

But for the mostly overkill of 30 Mp, I constantly have to lug much heavier and bigger equipment. I occasionally do so with medium format film, but only if I go out for a photoshoot. great insights. always fan that British accent :) The bottom line if you carry a bag of multiple lenses (3-4) and want to be on a minimal comfortable carry, nothing compares to m43. given the low f-number per price (such as 25mm f0.95) you still get a decent full format ~f2.0 paying less money per overall and keeping the size to minimum. also, the sensor movement compensation of Olympus makes it possible to shoot in low light for a long shutter time, and the elegance of pana, say gx7, is 2nd to none, except Leica. So the only thing comes down to Megapixel which is quite BS in real life.

I’m convinced MFT has a future. I use my phone a lot and for my camera of choice I use an Em10 mkii because of its size . I would like to see a revised set of primes with better finish and lens hood that is free . Price-wise, the price should be competitive , which is something Olympus have not been good at, when thinking of the nifty - fifty equivalent . Therefore , if an upgraded set of the lens trinity were to appear with perhaps current prices and a slightly faster aperture, then the existing set of the existing same lenses could be heavily discounted . That would create sales on both fronts and money for the new company . Support the consumer and the consumer supports the pro. Win-win : but consumers will upgrade to pro kit at some time . For me, the only reason I did not want an Em5 or Em1 was because they all have screens designed to swing out for video. I have no desire to do video , so a tilt screen is a must, as is a viewfinder . Megapixels does not interest me to buy an upgrade from 16 to 20, as I would not notice anything much different when images end up in my photo books. Better processing will improve focus and speed to write on the card, but I am not feeling any particular need to be concerned at present . However , duel focus options like on Em1 would be appreciated and could be offered by a software upgrade perhaps . I would like Olympus to offer an upgrade to existing models for a replacement of the processor . This could save in cost of production and attract and retain many to the brand if this service was practical to be offered . I would like a consumer service arrangement like an mot on cameras and this would keep our kit lasting even longer . Pipe dreams I know - but blue sky thinking or day dreaming of what I would like to see does not mean it will become a reality . But I have shared my thoughts for what they are worth with you, as you had asked . Good video by the way .

I really like tilting screens, not for video, but for low angle or macro shots. The fact that Sony and Nikon have stuck to tilting screens on their FF mirrorless cameras is a negative factor for me... Just to mention - dual or hybrid autofocus requires the presence of phase detection pixels in the sensor. The only MFT cameras that have phase detection pixels in the sensor are the likes of the E-M1 bodies and the E-M5 Mk III. Upgrading the processor in the camera wouldn't really have much of a performance upgrade outside of increasing the cache for writing images to SD card (really only a concern for people who do burst shooting) and doing computational photography tasks, like what is present in the E-M1X, with features like Live-ND, Train, Plane, Car and Bird AF and Stary Sky AF.

Do they want to convince themselves on their choice? If "bigger sensor is better", then why the Full Frame owners does not move to the medium format, which is bigger than 35mm? And now, I see many post about another fight: Full Frame mirror vs Full Frame mirrorless. Makes me wonder if FF stands for Full Fight rather than Full Frame. Well, not all the Full Frame owners spend time comparing systems. Most of them enjoy their gear as I enjoy mine. My conclusion: If most of my photos are taken during daylight time, then there is no need for me for "low light" performance. Besides, a tripod has solved my issues in low light.

Best advice I can give is this. I am a convert from Canon and a real advocate for M43 not because Canon is bad (total opposite in fact) but because I used M43 and found it fitted MY bill far better than the previous systems did. Notice the emphasis on MY. It may not suit everyone else’s. if you have a large investment in glass and accessories specific to Canon then you must take into account the cost to change, although you may recoup some expense by selling your current system. Go to a good local dealer who sells all platforms and ask if you can have a serious look and feel of them. Maybe even hire a system. Then decide. My “eureka moment” came when I took a youth group to the Normandy beaches and I took both a 7D canon and an EM5/1 Olympus with me with the intention of using each system on alternate days in the field throughout the week and see which I preferred. I ended up using the Canon for one day only and the rest was the Olympus. But remember, it fit my needs. But then I am getting older and weaker! I will never start to pull down the other systems such as APSC or FF or medium format. They really are all excellent but M43 and mirrorless has moved my photography to a whole new place without compromise on my previous shooting. Hope this helps. Oh….and don’t get too hung up on specifications and marketing hype, remember they are all out to sway you to spend money with them. Use your judgment objectively and you should be ok.

"Micro Four Thirds" is a standardised interchangeable lens mount system. There are more participating lens manufacturers than camera back makes. Unfortunately there is some limited functionality. For example the Oly 100-400 is a wonderful lens that will Synch-IS on a suitable Oly back e.g. E-M5ii, but not Pan backs. The Leica 100-400 is also a wonderful lens that will Dual2 on a suitable Pan back e.g. G9, but not Oly backs. It does beggar the question why Oly have chosen not to offer Synch-IS when they can utilise the Pan OIS as 'Lens-IS', which shows they can. Oly have produced very few lenses with Len-OIS, whereas most of the Pan lenses already have 'Mega' OIS' or 'Power OIS' which will Dual-IS on a later Pan back. So it makes sense if you have a clutch of Pan lenses, the Oly backs will handle the shorter lenses on IBIS very well indeed, but not the longest; the Leica 100-400 wants the likes of the G9. An opposite example is the Oly 45mm which is a no-OIS telephoto that behaves best on an Oly IBIS back.
@vaska00762
@vaska00762 3 года назад
Olympus don't support Sync-IS with the 100-400mm. 5 axis stabilisation is provided, with the lens providing 4 axis stabilisation, and the body only doing roll stabilisation. Sync-IS is only available on the 300mm f/4, the 12-100mm f/4 and the 150-400mm f/4.5 TC ×1.25. Sync-IS works differently, and uses all 5 axis of IBIS in conjunction with 4 IS axis of stabilisation to provide even higher stops of image stabilisation than what would ordinarily be possible.

@@vaska00762 yeah - this is a huge failing of the Olympus Synch-IS system. Panasonic have got Dual-IS working on most of their OIS lenses. Fact is Olympus do have the tech to use Pan's OIS (use Lens-IS) and could implement a form of Dual-IS but choose not to because they want to sell their own lenses; rather ignoring the inter-compatibility standard they and Panasonic wrote together back in 2008.

@@vaska00762 - I stand corrected. So the longest lens from Olympus cannot Synch-IS. So they've shot themselves in the foot. Because the Leica 100-400 does Dual2 on a G9 (and a few others) so you can hand-hold it like a nifty 50. It is quite weird hand holding a lens that long, FF equivalent 800mm.

@@jeffslade1892 Dual IS and Sync-IS are different technologies. Dual IS gives about 5 stops of image stabilisation. As does the image stabilisation in the Olympus 100-400mm. Sync-IS can give anywhere between 5.5 to 6.5 stops of image stabilisation. The main reason why the 100-400 lens doesn't have Sync-IS is because it's not a Pro lens, it's a variable aperture zoom, and it's cheaper than the 300mm f/4 and the 150-400mm f/4.5.

@@vaska00762 - the big advantage to Dual-IS is not gaining stops but stabilising the view when framing the shot, thus enabling almost instant AF-Lock. If using the long lens for birding, it still needs about 1/500s to freeze movement. I feel that this places the Leica 100-400 on a G9 at a great advantage over the same lens on E-M5ii (which I've tried, good but no coconut) or the Oly 100-400 on either make (simply because it is not going to have that full synch). f/4 .5 to f/6.3 is 1 stop. f/4 to f/6.3 is 1.1/3 stops It's not a huge advantage, especially if you have to stop down to f/8 or f/11 because of the sunlight.

Panasonic has trimmed down its lineup and focusing on less full function cameras as well as improving the S series. A good decision.

Strange someone forgot to tell my Olympus gear that it was dead and it just keeps working in any weather delivering endless satisfaction. I can,t hear nay sayers when climbing a hill that I would never take a huge FF lens up🤣

Ubiquity always wins. MFT was designed for ubiquity and succeeded. Smaller lenses, ligter cameras, and a sensible engineering spec will see to it lasting until sensors and interchangeable lenses become obsolete. It aint going nowhere soon.

M43 provides a modern technique to shoot better images than smart phones. The sensor format of the future will be m43 or smaller! Period.

Really? I have an astonishing very old Nikon AIS 85 mm f/1.8 on my EM1 and it is also a good macro replacement with the Marumi close up, And I consider to vy a NEW Laowa 60mm macro lens 2:1! With an F-mount insread the 50 mm MFT version for my OM-D cameras (the Olympus 60 mm macro has no real manual focus).

I’m not sure I fully agree with you there. Yes, new cameras from the big 2 will be using the new lens mount but I can still see their APSC ranges going on for some time and also there are literally millions of users with older cameras who are still hungry to buy new glass without upgrading their bodies so I see the EF/ES-S & F mounts surviving for at least a few more years. Additionally, they are an less expensive option for the new bodies with an adaptor so again I can see an appeal for new mount users too.

Well you have started something. No of course not why would it? lets have a look, Its smaller cheaper and less weight and if you look at what some of the old pro photographers say its pretty damn good, you just have to look on here to see that. I started with a G3 then G80 and now a G9 and Panasonic have just done the firmware update so my G9 and lens are all up to date like a new camera.

As long as profits are made with MFT, the system will continue. Overall, Olympus and Panasonic have recently been aiming more at professional photographers and less at amateurs. The new lenses from Panasonic and Olympus are over 1000 euros, as are the high-end cameras. The future will show whether this strategy works. Most vacationers travel with cell phones and take their photos with them. The new PEN EP7 goes against this trend. That is remarkable. Whether a new Pana GH6 is over 2000 euros and what new features it has, we will see. Personally, I will not buy a Fujifilm GFX100 with 100 megapixels and prefer to stay with my GX8 and some predecessors.

As a mft user there isn't any difference in print quality between mft and full frame, well apart from the superior colour science of Olympus straight out of the camera which means apart from a little cropping I can go straight to print. Perhaps the best way to improve your photography is to invest in a decent editing PC and monitor instead of a new system and print your photos

Nikon D810 + 24-120mm F4 lens =1810grams. Panasonic G9 + 12-60 equivalent lens = 807grams. Enough said? While the current laws of physics pertain I know which outfit I want to lug up a mountain.

Agree, when I look at my D750 with 24-120mm next to my G95 with 12-60, no question which one I would take on a hike. I also picked up a 100-200mm Lumix M43 lens for a great price at a pawn shop. I have most ranges covered with vintage primes as well with adapters.

I am happy OMDS is developing new cameras but I fail to see who they are going to sell this camera to. If they had included a cell connection that would allow for direct uploading to social media or the cloud I think they may have had a winner. Phone users are not going to switch to SD cards.

Bob, you make a great point. I would not switch from cell phone to E-P7 if it had a fixed lens. The fact that it is an ILC, is the compelling reason to upgrade from cell. There is an excessive amount of lens options. My iPhone XR can’t see clearly a subject that is hundreds of meters away.
