Crack in the Ground and the Four Craters Lava Field

This video explores Crack in the Ground. I noticed most Crack in the Ground videos only go to the crack and nothing else. So this one I decided to include Green Mountain and the Four Craters which are of interest and related to the crack. Lots of volcanic history and fun things to look at in this area. Crack in the Ground is a volcanic fissure, created by shifting ground underneath. It is a very unique canyon in Central Oregon that all should visit.

Wonderful video! You are right - the surrounding area is also interesting and beautiful. My very favorite spot is out and across the graben/sink to the east of the crack: you can see how the whole area collapsed into a slight “bowl”… Thanks for posting this peaceful depiction of my backyard!

So happy to see another Matt.Cook.Oregon video. As a small land owner in Christmas Valley, I visited with a many generation local that mentioned Crater lake water showing up near Ana reservoir. That just came to mind as you mention the ash from Crater lake being at the floor of Crack in the ground. The water is believed to travel in underground lava tubes etc. Maybe that fact or myth would worthy of a video someday?

Yes, Matt, could you maybe address this issue? I would appreciate some clarity.

I saw some real cheap land in Christmas valley for sale recently, man that was tempting. Seems pretty far for Crater lake water to show up but ya never know. There is definitely some underground water that farms tap into at Christmas valley. I never covered anything Crater lake on video. Party cause no dogs, and then so many others have already covered it I dont see the need to.

If you go with your kids during mid-late summer, show them beforehand what stinging nettles look like (sort of like mint, with pretty flowers at times). There are some in and in shady places around the crack. Touching those things can be very painful for quite a while. Nice video overview, and definitely an interesting place to explore, plus a little hike that gives you a nice shot of cool air on hot desert days.

Nice video. I’ve been going there since I was a kid in the 60s, but only few times in the past 10. That road from Christmas Valley three fourths of the way can be a brutal washboard ride. And don’t forget the cave near Christmas Valley. Derrick Cave and Devil’s Garden Volcanic Field.

Thank you. I've heard the washboard complaint a couple times on here. Either we had early season good conditions or we just drive too slow to notice. I did a video at Derrick cave too, pretty much every well known thing in Christmas valley covered now.

Aerial views are very good at showing the extent and type of terrain features because the topography is miles and miles across and can't be seen readily from ground level. Thanks for the views and information on this location. Your videos are always great, and take me places I've been and not understood well, places I've heard of but not seen in person, and places I haven't heard of but want to learn about. Thanks Connie! I have been pretty slow with videos lately. Busy with the 2 daughters and working a lot. I will probably do a lot less videos but the ones I do will be special. Just this weekend we tried for some eclipse ring of fire action. I had a pro photographer at the bottom of Thielsen, climbed up to get a shot with me on the peak with eclipse behind, but then clouds rolled in and ruined it! Still had a fun time.
