Death From Above 1979 - Live @ Glastonbury 2015 This politicised and thunderous Canadian two-piece reformed in 2011, and have finally made it to Worthy Farm.
This group was so good. I love their song Train Wreck. I remember I got to meet Death From Above. They both were really friendly & down to earth guys. I got a CD signed by them & even took my pic with them. :)
he's gotten way better at balancing the vocals and drums in the decade since. saw them last year and he wasn't struggling for breath the whole time like he always seemed to be 10 years ago lol
0:52 Turn It Out 3:53 Right On, Frankenstein 7:13 Virgins 10:40 Cheap Talk 13:40 You're A Woman, I'm A Machine 16:50 Go Home, Get Down 19:14 White Is Red 24:44 Trainwreck 1979 28:50 Going Steady 31:32 Gemini 34:04 Little Girl 39:42 Government trash 43:01 Always On 46:00 Romantic Nights 51:18 The Physical World No Blood On Our Hands :(
+Eric Walker Seb can't sing Blood On Our Hands anymore, his voice is kinda ragged and he hasn't got the range to do it comfortably anymore. They still play Dead Womb and Do It! occasionally, just not very often.
Fair enough, I guess the whole vibe DFA have is that they're not perfect, they will make mistakes, either Jesse hits a few wrong notes, or Seb can't quite hit some notes here and there, but it's about the fun of the show, and hearing the music live, which is a pretty good vibe to go with.
How can you expect a live show to sound like a recording man ? Your comment comes across as asinine. You can watch a lip sync at halftime Super Bowl if you like .
Christian Almaguer I know it's a late reply but I hope it helps. He uses a chorus pedal to make the sound go between both of his amps, it's like creating two separate tremolos and making one amp get louder when the other amp is getting less loud. So when he gets close and gets that icky high pitch feedback we all hate, it does a kind of whirling siren sound.
I love his voice here regardless of the drumming - so unique and full of character. But you're absolutely right: it takes a hell of a lot of co-ordination to not only maintain such ferocious energy on the drums and project your voice at all, but also stay in time, play the right beats, remember all the lyrics, create any semblance of a melody, and not pass out from the pressure of the crowd and trying to maintain breathing. And for an HOUR?! Seb's brain and body are a divine gift lmao.
this show is sick as usual but like you could tell the audience was mostly not fans. you have to go see them play a gig to fully experience the fucking madness. one of the most violent moshpits ive been in for sure
this band really helped me out through highschool and most of my life. I am glad they decided to be adults and reunite! i really hope they play at the rave someday..i really want to meet them.. to me they are THE most influential artists to motivate me to make music to this day..
All these years later you're a woman, i'm a machine still slaps. I remember back in 04 just how mad this album seemed in the context of the scene at that time. Proper visionaries
Jeremy Hopkins My first concert was DFA on the Physical World tour. Pontiac, Michigan. The intro piano to Turn It Out was probably the scariest thing I had heard in my life up to that point.
I haven't seen em yet, but I'm going to see em in Ottawa in October. They aren't as big in Ottawa as Toronto, but because of when they were at bluesfest, I know that it's probably around 750x crazier than this video
Although that Seb can't reach a few high notes and Jesse hits a few wrong notes, I'm actually impressed by the sound quality in live performance, having in mind that they are a two men band
Especially taking into account that Seb is playing drums while singing. It's fucking hard to pull that off, especially all those double kick runs in Government Trash! Singing and playing that is hard as hell!
Wish I could have gotten a show like this. When I caught them in Vancouver around this time, January 2015 I believe, Sebby was so hammered he was practically falling off his stool and couldn't keep time for shit. And not like on the CBC demo from 2003, where the tempo changes add to the intensity. The songs were constantly on the brink of completely falling apart. Also, to describe his singing that night as "off-key" would be extremely generous. It was a mess. I was coming down from a speed binge, my girlfriend was pissed at me and I was pissed at the band. All in all, not a stellar night. Didn't expect them to last much longer after that, but thanks to RU-vid I now know my experience was an anomaly.
turn it out 0:51 right on frankenstein 3:54 virgins 7:12 cheap talk 10:41 you are a women im a machine 13:40 go home get down 16:37 withe is red 19:14 trainwreck 24:36 going steady (obra maestra creación de los dioses del valhalla ) 28:47 gemini 31:31 little girl 33:54 government trash 39:41 always on 43:26 romantic rights 45:49 the physical world 51:02
I'm presently learning how to play Bass. I'd love to be able to play like Jesse with that sound! My ultimate goal is to beat these guys to finding the brown frequency
+Simon G I really love that song I don't know why others dislike it so much yes I know its different from most if their other songs but I believe its a good change
I saw this band in Dallas on August 20th. It's not really my style of music and I didn't see the whole show, but what I did see definitely left an impression on me.
***** I believe they wanted just death from above, but there is a record company by that name already, so they added in the year of birth. something along those lines.
***** I think the sound here is just a matter of the stage mixing not being too great because on their albums they hit you with a thick wave of sound. As for the vocals, he's just really pushing himself to hit the notes and he starts to wear out his voice. A lot of their stuff requires a lot of energy to be put into the vocals, which when combined with drumming, makes it a lot more difficult. And idk, maybe it's just me but you really can't compare Royal Blood and their blues rock sound with DFA's dance-punk/noise rock sound; its two different realms
***** i think these bands are different, DFA is about some crazy dance punk/rock and Royal is about some heavy blues stuff and groove. I think both bands are great, but to be honest i like that craziness that DFA does and i don't like that strange nu-metal/hip-hop look of Royal Blood's drummer, which is completly unsuit with their music style. Peace :)
Iv seen Rogers Waters the Wall, Metallica, Eric Clapton, Modest Mouse, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, White Stripes, Rush, AC/DC, Billy Talent, U2, Pearl Jam, Blue Rodeo, Mathew Good, Guns N Roses, Skid Row........ I could go on. These guys put on THE MOST energetic and best show/experience ever!!!
+Irma Cruz Close. His cabs have some guitar speakers in them, but the heads are definitely bass. Peavey F-800B Super Festival and I wanna say an Acoustic 370.
+ScotchRobbins He does a video on Rig Rundown about this, from what i remember he knows the guy who owns Traynor, and they made a custom cab for him, that then got dropped and broken, so there are some traynor heads, a PA system speaker and a couple telephone ones too i believe. As far as the head I do believe it is a bass head.
If they slowed down the pace the vocals could be more on point. He's not giving himself enough time to breathe between bars. I love right on, Frankenstein but the tempo change didn't feel as awesome as it is on recording.
Great performance, lots of guts, lots of balls. But man... I think they should maybe higher a drummer for live performances; It's just too hard on Sebastien. I know that's part of the magic of their live shows, but it'd be soooooo much cleaner if he could focus on singing.
as you said, it would kill the magic of it all, only a drummer-singer can put all that energy in it. all they need is a better mic solution, cause the main problem is that the voice mic catches a lot of the drums along with the voice
It works great when you're there watching, but at this point he has to scream it and, combined with breathlessly paced lyrics, I can't help but imagine it does his voice in.
Love their albums but the moment they go on stage, both the drums and the vocals suffer. I get the whole duo/tandem power thing but it does not work for them anymore; specially in this type of venues. The drums are constantly rushing or dragging while the vocals are always in effort. It’s a shame they don’t realize that.
Seen them in Glasgow this year and was blown away compared to this - think the mix is really bad, it's like the mixing engineer was only given a room mic and OH's to mix all elements lol
pretty cool...but why do they have elephant noses on all their albums? i saw a band open up for Ringo Deathstarr that was just like this......bass and drums..they were called Shanks from Toronto .....same place , right?
+miked4309 "Jesse has been having psychedelic dreams about elephants since he was a boy. His therapist suggested he use elephants in his art to exercise the demons within." This was posted by Seb during an AMA they did on Reddit a year or two ago.
I remember reading somewhere that jesse is colour-blind and likes the feel of that shirt on his skin, so he might have multiples, or just where it lots
it's frustrating: I like their songs a lot more than royal blood, but when you compare their live performances, I have to admit I rather buy a ticket for royal blood...
I get the point, but they're two completely different acts and genres. I like both of them, but DFA 1979 are much more raw and wild, maybe even more difficult to listen to, somehow. Royal Blood are good, but they're kind of "bland" compared to DFA 1979. I think it's because they're very clean, even if they have blasting sounds. Anyway I hope you'll get to see both of them playing live one day!
RB might sound better live, but DFA are legendary because they were pioneers in the bass/drum duo thing. Also, they are bands from different generations, there's like a decade of distance between the two. It's like comparing Nirvana with Hüsker Dü.
Nah brah. These videos don't do it justice. They are so sick when you're actually in person. Its fucking intense and waaayyy better than RB live. (I've seen both). Also, Jesse's bass cab is unlike other set up from any group ive seen. It's really something to experience
+nice cat If you've ever played guitar before, the pickups on electric ones, when brought near the amp generate feedback. Jesse (Bassist) has his setting configured in a way that keep that feedback compact and out of the way until he brings the pickups close to the amp. That's why you'll notice he runs over and is right next to the amp at the start of Turn it Out and Gemini. Fuckin love Gemini.
Amp feedback, but his signal modulates back and forth between the cabs using a stereo chorus pedal. That makes that siren squeal, then I think he has a mild compressor to stop him blowing out the already overloaded speakers. I recommend watching his rig rundown sometime
READ THE COMMENT i said ;;listen to Lightning Bolt ,,where at any time does it say that i am comparing the two . so think before you go running your mouth off DUDE !!
El Starkey it is and up to a point, like when you’re a beginner because you’re mostly playing one note but you can go pretty far with it technique wise
god, the ppl complaining about the accuracy to the studio album make me angry. who gives a fuck if you're having a good time? if i wanted a studio album played live i'd be listening to top 40 bullshit, but i don't and i won't.
??? Yeah this isn't music. They should be called "Death from Listening to this". lol. I've never liked drummers who think they are capable enough to have only one cymbal or lack skill behind the drum set. Amazing voice though. lol
