A while back I was given a free Craftsman riding lawn mower that had quite running. After a little investigating, I had determined the Briggs and Stratton engine was blown and I thought it would be fun to perform an autopsy on the engine.

Blew the head gasket between the cylinder wall’s 3 o’clock position into the valve pushrod galley as evidenced by the scorched marks radiating at that point from the cylinder into the galley. That was oil in the bottom of the cylinder when you pulled the head. The majority of the carbon was burnt oil sucked into the cylinder. I noticed a new spark plug, the old plug would’ve been completely clogged with burnt oil. The owner would have seen huge clouds of white exhaust smoke from the burning oil. The engine consumed all the crankcase oil until the connecting rod journal ran dry, which then led to its failure.

It is easy to remove all the aluminium from the crankshaft big end with acid. It will remove the aluminium but not hurt the crankshaft journal. The crankshaft will be fine once aluminium removed. It could be easily be rebuilt with a new connecting rod, new rings and gasket kit. I have done this many times on these engines.
