"We don't have to go into NATO" - "Codifying that in your constitution" - "Excuse me, we are sovereign country, we are not gonna codify anything in our constitution". In Ukrainian declaration of sovereignty in 1990 status of military neutrality is codified (and 1991 declaration of Ukrainian independence referred to that declaration of sovereignty). Moreover, military neutrality is also codified in Austrian constitution (and it was the condition of end of Allied occupation of Austria in 1955). In 1815 Switzerland was recognized as neutral country by other countries including Russia. So it's normal that country is recognized by its neighbor only based on some key condition (like military neutrality).

Post Minsk Agreements, it's not Putin's trustworthiness that's up for question, but the trustworthiness of Western leaders. Personally, with the remarkably low levels of corruption in Ukraine, I would be happy to trust the word of any Ukrainian official.

The Budapest Memorandum from 1994, signed in Patria Hall at the Budapest Convention Center *prohibited Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom from threatening or using military force* or economic coercion against Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, "except in self-defence or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations." As a result of other agreements and the memorandum, between 1993 and 1996, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons.

@@MathiasKp now look up the definition of "Memorandum" and contrast that with "Accord" or "Agreement" and see the difference. Also, write out Point 5 of the Memorandum in full, and then comment on whether point 5 was ever fulfilled. Your homework is incomplete. Grade, C-, could do better.

The last person who should call themselves a "realist"... is an academic... There's a saying that applies when a discussion has no bearing on reality... "It's all academic."... Here are the facts. Ukrainians overwhelmingly chose independance from Moscow in 1991. They were given assurances of "SOVEREIGNTY AND TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY" in exchange for nuclear disarmament... Putin broke that promise when he invaded Crimea... therefore, putin cannot be trusted... end of debate.

Mearsheimer is an enigma. Clearly a very intelligent person, perhaps too much an academic that does not realize that reality sometimes is far simpler than his intricate geopolitical games. He knows how NATO work. Putin for sure knows how NATO works. There is NO WAY IN HELL Ukraine will become a member in a foreseeable future. DWould Orban say yes? Erdogan? Slovakia? Germany and France was extremely opposed--firmly said NEIN and NON. Germany went (to use a favorite expression of John) TO GREAT LENGTHS, had a lot of common interests and business with Russia, to accommodate Kremlin To a point where they got questioned by other Western countries. Ukraine is not about NATO. It is about influence and control. About not letting democracy, freedom and transparency to close to Russia (remember the what happened in Minsk when Lukashenka was close to getting ousted, who came to his rescue?). An environment Putin and his corrupt mafia buddies won't survive. They know it and are prepared to do anything and everything to cling on, even fooling the poor Russians into a war that will devastate their own country. Only so that Putin to save his own sorry ass.

I think my problem with having a neutral state is that it won’t really be neutral. The other will try to influence this neutral state into theirs. So basically, a non-aligned state with someone pulling their strings. It doesn’t align with democracy. If it was then Ukraine should have accepted the deal before.

Mearsheimer lacks... resolution. His political picture of Russia and Ukraine simply lacks fidelity. He has admitted in at least one Q&A that he doesn't know much about Ukrainian politics, and it shows. I don't know the details of the negotiations that were happening in March and April of 2022, but would anyone be surprised if Putin was pushing for a constitutional reform that stops Ukraine from ever joining NATO? And then in the midst of this environment, the atrocities of Bucha were discovered in early April. All of this was happening... and people still find a way to blame the West by blaming Boris Johnson. The reality is that no one: not Johnson, not Biden, not anyone... could force Ukraine to fight Russia. The lesson of Afghanistan (at least one of the lessons) is that giving money and training and equipment in the billions of dollars to a government doesn't mean anything. It means nothing... unless there are people willing to risk their lives to fight. The Taliban were willing to risk their lives. Ghani's government was not. Ukraine's government, and its soldiers were willing. This is why Zelensky staying in Kyiv, even as the city was being surrounded by Russian forces, mattered. It showed that the government was willing to stick by its fighting forces; that instead of fleeing to some western country (which he could have done) Zelensky and his cabinet were going to put their own skin on the line as their soldiers were doing. And don't forget about the soldiers... they were dying by the hundreds in the first hours/days of the war. And all of this was happening when only measly amounts of training and aid had come into the country from the West.
