Don't throw in the towel just yet! The month of December can still offer some great hunting opportunities! While hunting the late season can be challenging as the hunting pressure is through the roof after the firearm opener and the deer herd has been pushed all over the neighborhood. Severe weather has also either arrived or is knocking at the doorstep, food sources are disappearing and the temps are dropping fast. It's a difficult time of year for the deer herd, they are doing everything they can to stay alive. This can make them more difficult to hunt, but at the same time it also makes them more predictable, especially when you consider the send flurry of breeding that takes place in early December. In this video we will discuss several different hunting opportunities you can take advantage of in the month of December .

Great information. I think you’re right, those later morning hunts. The big ones hang tight to the heavy cover, then work the transitions from hardwood to cedar thickets. Better dress warm, May take time for a big cruiser to materialize. his nose is working those doe bedding areas; you still have to obey the wind….

Right on Chris! Playing the wind is a must! If you can find an undisturbed late season food source this time of year.. watch out!

One of these years you'll have to come over and sit in a tree to watch it in the fall. It's pretty fun to watch it happen right in front of you.

I'm a mid Michigan public land hunter so I appreciate your content. Going out this evening to try and take advantage of the second rut phase. A doe will work just as well. Keep the videos coming 👍

What should # of deer be on 50 acres? Great video
@brianteeters4023
@brianteeters4023 Год назад
If that 50 acres kooks like a park and has no food on the forest floor it will not likely hold many deer at all. On the other hand, if there has been on going logging and good regrowth the property will hold more deer. If the property had ag or large food plots near by that might provide more winter time food because deer will be eating fewer browes when food is plentiful. Take a walk in the spring and clip 6 or 7 pounds of 1/8" to 3/16" twigs and buds. You'll have a new appreication of how much food a single deer eats in a day.
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
Brian is right on, and that is a very complicated question as there are SO many different variables to consider. What's the deer density, what's the surrounding habitat like? Winter food sources? Abundant woody regeneration? Some areas are able to hold more deer than others. Continue to provide food throughout the hunting season and work on getting more sunlight to the forest floor to start early successional growth. Keep doing this and you will have a happier herd. One way you can check to see if you have too many deer for your property is to monitor the food sources. If you have quite a few food sources, and plenty of sunlight / wood browse and they are wiping you out and there are visible browse lines, it's time to harvest some deer.

I live in ar and my area has no acorns this year so it’s been tougher. I look for saddles wide spots on the top of ridges they seem to cross there or like a shelf. If you have a spot where tall and short trees meet that’s usually good. You have not seen any deer or no big bucks?

@@sureshots8155I've seen doe. But no bucks. If they do come by it's to dark. I need to get time to do so major scouting. All I have to hunt on is public land.

@@bladedgto5327 me to. I have not seen much sense the second weekend of gun. I got a decent buck during muzzleloader. I am hoping to get a doe before it’s over. I done gave up on a buck.

What you guys really need is some wolves. Ask the DNR if they’ll bring you some from the UP. Then you won’t need to harvest any does. Solves a lot of problems with the deer herd. Heck in some spots the doe to buck ratio was 0:3 this year. Our bucks up North are going to have to turn into queer deer to get laid. We’re really appreciating all the management goals in place they’re implementing. Thanks state of Michigan!!!

Would winter wheat fields be a good food source to hunt over because I live in Ohio and only have 2 places to hunt and both feilds are wheat

Absolutely. The farmer next to us uses winter wheat as a cover crop. The deer LOVE his fields.

@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
That's a great question Cooper and JC had a good answer, it starts with what you can offer that the local habitat is lacking. With 900 acres I am sure you can give the deer everything they need, you will just need a plan for how to lay the property out. If you need help with this, send me an email, I'd be happy to talk about ways to improve your property.

It's rare when there are so many deer that the land has been decimated. People make excuses to shoot doe to ease their guilt of denying a fawn it's mother through a hard winter.
@brandonhunt4472
@brandonhunt4472 Год назад
Your fawns can make it at this point. In some situations shooting does is a necessary task. They eat good too.
@pauldeahl3980
@pauldeahl3980 Год назад
you have no idea what youre talking about. are you a farmer? do you even live around deer?
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
I agree that it's not common to have the habitat completely wiped out but it all depends on the area. If an area has a very high deer density but poor habitat / low carrying capacity, that area will have a higher chance of being picked clean.. this can encourage less desirable invasive species to thrive and take over.
