🏠I love the way you explained The Reformitory. I had not been interested as the comments I have heard have pitched it as a haunted house and those are just not my cup of tea. However, the way you approached it, I am very interested in picking it up now. It sounds like it had much more depth to the plot.
I love Black Sheep so much! That soft reveal you're talking about made me cackle. I'm super excited to read The Reformatory because I read The Good House for Summerween and it was a five star book.
I hope you're feeling better soon. The Reformatory is a masterpiece. Tananarive Due has been one of my favorite writers for years, but this book truly solidifies her place in the American literary canon🏚
I knew you were talking about The Reformatory before you even said the title. I just read it and can’t stop thinking about it. Horrific story and beautifully written. I am obsessed.
Black Sheep 👏🏻👏🏻 Also I was never really interested in The Reformatory but every person I hear rave about it is really making me want to change my mind and give it a try!
I literally just finished The Reformatory just a couple of hours ago and its worth every bit of the hype I've heard about it, The fact that much of the horror that takes place in this book is real events just makes it hit all that deeper.
You explained The Reformatory so well. Yes to all of that! It was so good and so devastating. I’m reading Black Sheep right now, about 100 pages in. I’m glad you unpacked it a little. It helps when I go in with some expectations. That little twist of the reality of what’s going on made me laugh. I love how parallel those lines of religion can run. Trying to be vague here. ☺️
The way you explain the ending of "Christmas Presents" like a zipper....a very abrupt "THE END"..... Was exactly the way I was trying to explain the ending of "Not a Happy Family" to my father when I finished it this morning. I really enjoyed the messy ride but the ending was so abrupt. No Aha moment, like you said.
🏡 I had The Reformatory on preorder, but like a dufus I canceled it. After listening to your review I’m gonna have to buy it. Thanks again for the great video
There was this one story in Out Here Screaming that was so understated and perfect, I wish I could remember what it was, because I definitely want to read more from that author. I'm so bad at remembering stories, but there was a guy and he was getting together with his family? Maybe some cousins? Maybe one of the cousins was kind of an asshole? And involved in something that had terrible consequences for maybe the whole world? Gah! Mine was a NetGalley copy and I deleted it from my Kindle library when I was done with it, like a dummy. And when you likened The Puzzle Master to Blake Crouch, I thought YEAH! I can totally see that---Mike Brink's journey had this pulpy/noir/not-quite-campy-but-close men's adventure magazine vibe to it in certain points. I think I liked the supernatural elements a bit more, the creepy dolls and the _____ relgious/occult/theosophical specific thing that I feel like you don't see a lot of stories about. (I don't want to say specifically what that was, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone.)
Oh gosh, I can’t remember which story that was from Out There Screaming either! 😬 The men’s adventure magazine in Puzzle Master is right on! I thought it was interesting that it was written by a woman, because of that. You don’t often see women writing men MCs. You usually see it the other way around. And the fact that the romance part was so weird!
Great recap. I hated the writing in “Leave the World Behind,” thought it a great plot idea (reminded me of a specific Twilight Zone episode) but thought it poorly executed. Read it when it first came out. The adaptation was only slightly better. 😜
In leave the world behind I thought Ruth and GH were father and daughter.... IDK I read the book when it first came out so I don't really remember it but I saw the movie a week ago did they change up the relationship to make it better or something and I want to thank you for explaining Christina Henry's book a lot better than some other people explain it they don't explain it that well and it makes me not want to pick it up but the way you explained it makes me want to pick it up ❤
I think I know why but I don't want to say on here in case of spoiler territory all in all was good movie and a good book ! Just so you know every time I get a notification for your videos I stop whatever's going on make cup of tea and watch your videos I kid you not I'll have a friend over and I'll be like yeah can you leave lol
