Very grateful to've found this video! We're purchasing a home, we need to tear out the existing (old) deck, and we don't want to replace with deck, but weren't sure about options since the door sits about four feet above the ground. Your examples 2 and 3 really helped us visualize some options. Great work! Thank you!

Hi, your designs are beautiful! We have a ranch house with 3 steps down to a patio. Our property is not fenced and we've seen some wild animals in the past few months. We are thinking of a deck (Trex) so we can just step down and have the convenience of an enclosed patio and also feel safer. Our patio is very pretty but the convenience of a deck is weighing on my decision. The deck would be about 3-3 1/2 feet above high. Would that look strange? Appreciate your input. Thank you.

Stamped concrete patio is much better. Cheaper, no maintenance and last for a hundred years vs 20.
@BackyardDesignGuy
@BackyardDesignGuy Год назад
I disagree with this statement- pavers are far superior than poured concrete. Stamped will crack and look bad after a few years. Pavers are for life… just go to Italy and see the paver roads that were installed 2000 years ago. Humans are still driving on them today. Do pavers for sure

i've been wanting to build a deck out back for years. however...this video almost has me convinced to go with concrete/paver build instead....almost convinced. im still skeptical that a concrete/paver build would really be cheaper than a wooden deck build. considering i wanted to DIY the deck cause my carpentry skills are better than my masonry skills. if i go with a concrete paver patio i'd have to hire pros

Brother you said it! I will never ever go with a deck again. Put a 550' sq ft. two level deck behind our single story. Looked great until it didn't. Work, work, work keeping it up. Had every deck board replaced after 6 years, but every year had to power wash, and stain it. A royal PIA. After this year, we are striking it and going with pavers. Won't consider composite either.

We have a slightly sloping back yard on the east side coming towards our single story house which resulted in swampy conditions outside the back door. It was hardly ever dry and the grass always struggled in the afternoon shade. I built a 12x16 floating deck starting 5 feet from the house and graded under it to create a dry creek bed in the gravel that channels water away and down the driveway. I think it looks great and it stands out as a destination point in the back yard. I was also able to build it myself in 3 days for about a $1,000. For people that just need a simple grilling/dining and relaxing space that doesn't sit too heavily or dominate the sight lines out to a manicured garden, a deck in my opinion is still a valid option.
@BackyardDesignGuy
@BackyardDesignGuy 4 года назад
Totally agree! In some conditions I still would recommend a deck. Most of the time I find the paver solution to be the best option though. Thank u so much for sharing your thoughts and watching and commenting. Have a great day.

Always do a patio never do a deck they are more work they now over ti.e the fade they splinter you always need to restrain sand retain sand repete .if you are a glutton for punishment do a deck. On one level homes or lower level always do a pretty cement patio. they last longer and are no maintenance just wash or spey off and you are set. If you are in a home where you are on a second floor a deck is the only option. use trex it is a much better product than wood you will never be sanding and staining with trex it is a vinal material that looks like a wood deck easy maintenance just spey off or sweep like a patio and you are good to go. NEVER NEVER NEVER DO A WOOD DECK OF YOU ARE WISE!!! GOOD LUCK!

We have Fiberon on a covered deck and plan to extend our deck out with the same material. We hoped to step down and do pavers but have impervious limits on our property so are left with basically two options: decking and pea gravel. Anyway, why do you prefer Fiberon over Trex?

Single level homes should NOT have a deck (in most cases). That of course is my personal opinion (with 25+ years of personal experience). You are limiting your outdoor space for sure. Just hire a good designer first, or ask your deck guy to provide a good design that shows the whole space in a 3d or perspective view. Just make sure to think past the "now" and how u might use the space in the future.

Then I feel like you have your answer 🤗. When we design we design for what is best for the architecture of the home and the client and the way "they" will use the space. If you are building it for the next owner then do what u feel would be best for them. The video here did point out some nice solutions to step out onto a solid surface but that just may not be what is best for u.
