An aircraft bit is an old school name for the days when aircraft were made of wood frames and covered in treated cloth materials and when mechanics needed to reach into the framing/cloth covering for whatever reason that drilling was required, they used these long bits. In the 25 years I was in the USAF, I never heard of this terminology. However, I have read about it. In my USAF career we referred to them as the bit diameter size by the length of the bit, like 1/4-inch X 10". We never had much need for drill bits like that, but we would need long drivers occasionally. And we also required driver bits with universal joint in them to get around objects, precluding having to remove said objects. In the USAF, repair time, turnaround is very significant so as to get the aircraft back into service. Fly, fight, WIN! A little flux and solder will prevent the cables from getting frayed while feeding through the flanges/posts.

@@1Akanan1 I know what cold welding is, but I am seriously doubtful that such a thing was achieved here, or that it even could be. When I attended college, we learned about this process. We tried to achieve cold welding using hand tools and copper wire, steel wire and steel cable. There was almost a 100% failure rate among those wires and cables that were crimped by hand. A ratcheting crimping tool was necessary to achieve a true cold welding. And even then, there was about a 20-25% rate of failure.

One thing that I like to do when drilling through a post is I get a long tiny drill bit and use that to drill through the post, almost like a pilot hole Then I can come back with the bigger drill bit and drill from each side so I have clean holes on each side. Takes the guess work out of trying to hit it from each side.
@frankhazzard3250
@frankhazzard3250 2 года назад
Isn't it just as likely that a small bit used for an all-the-way-through pilot hole, vs a larger bit used for a one-and-done, would be off when it pops out the far side? What am I missing? Thanks.

@@frankhazzard3250 I think he is talking about a bit that is not long enough to go straight through. Screw a board to connect the two drilled boards together into the U shape. Now you have a jig to drill through each side half way to meet in the middle. I make a little plywood square jig that you clamp around the posts and you just use the 'right angle of the plywood to help guide your drill bit through the posts (drilling posts on both sides), it works really well and your holes are accurate without having to 'eyeball' your drill bit for level/square and plumb, it's pretty accurate and your holes will line up well, no second guessing! Takes 10 minutes to knock up and you just clamp it onto your posts (Irwin quick clamps) to drill your holes. Run your cables through each post (put some painters tape on each end of each post so you don't get confused as to which cable is what as you go and then thread your capping on as the same time with each post (it's a bit time consuming but it's the way to do it, that way you don't or won't risk feather out your cable strands or your cables all out of level/alignment) Just a thought or tip.
