When a 360 is talked about as a classic, I am forcibly reminded how old I am. 😂 I still think 1990 is 10 years ago and lust after a Testarossa and a 1967 yellow Dino. Maybe one day 🤞
I know. I can’t believe that the Stone Roses debut album is 35 years old. Back then, we had The Las to look forward to & then Oasis / Blur, if that’s your thing. I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat ❤😎 Though I’d pass on the diabolical Blair second time around😮
A great review, I have had 5 over the years, currently owning a 2001 Spider and 2004 Stradale. The owning and running costs have not been astronomical, if I had one bit of advice is to get any bits done on the car and not leave it as it can cause more issues! I have driven 40-50 k miles across continents on both cars they have been superb and don’t be scared to buy a higher mileage car as one very low mileage I purchased many years ago had numerous issues. They do in my eyes look better than the later 430, which does surprisingly have many more issues. Cambelt change and servicing at independents or dealers is not as costly as many would think. Drive wise the manual is great but so is the f1 if you upgrade the ecu to stradale spec. They are not as sophisticated as the later 430 or 458 but the noise I get from my stradale on full chat is simply amazing. 👍
Great work Mr JayEmm. As an owner who is almost three years and £22k in maintenance (which in fairness includes consumables like brakes and tyres) into his 360 spider (with no regrets) I think it’s a very accurate summary. So far I’ve done: - fuel pumps - steering rack rebuild - soft top elastics and microswitch - pads and discs all round - PS4s x 4 - annual service * 3 (last one inc cambelt) - driver’s window regulator - air con compressor - sundry bits and pieces like bumper paint touch ups, sticky interior trim and probably some other stuff I’ve forgotten Not sure about the parts availability point though. ECUs for example run £7k a pair (if you can find them and you need to replace them in pairs). A lot of the buyers guides from the mainstream mags on these cars suggesting £2k a year maintenance are out of date now these cars are 20+ years old. If you can stomach the maintenance costs then crack on, they are a very special thing (and they don’t really seem to be depreciating anymore).
Whoa there "silver" doesn't do the colour justice. I'm pretty sure that other car in the video is Grigio Alloy and its that hint of sky blue that makes it really "pop".
I know of one in Australia and when it came up for sale I first thought it was an aftermarket job until I did some digging and found out it was a very rare option
I am sure it is a brilliant car to drive, but to my eyes it is just not that pretty (which I think is important for the mid engined V8 Ferrari supercars). Sort of looks like it has melted a little bit in the oven.
A very accurate review of what has been an underrated Ferrari. I've owned mine for 10 years now and it still is a special feeling when driving. Very comfortable to drive and the manual gearstick is a joy to use. As the modern models get more and more complex in design, these have such flowing lines. My previous car was a Lotus Esprit so I know where you're coming from in the comparison and like you, the new Lotus Emira is something I would look at in the future when I come to replace the 360 (not quite yet though !).
The phrase "Timeless design" gets thrown about a lot in the car world, but when a design that was launched in 1999 still looks drop-dead gorgeous in 2023, then it is definitely worthy of being called Timeless.
I picked one of these up last year, deliberately a slightly higher mileage example to avoid a car that had sat for ages. Prices didn't seem to have risen as much as other sports cars over the pandemic. Thoroughly enjoying it so far - it's a good blend of old and new and to my eyes a far more graceful shape than the aggressively-styled F430.
Not in 100% agreement ref Ferrari maintenance program. My California T (was) under warranty cover and maintenance pack. Not an insignificant £4000 a year fee. Had it in for annual service at Xmas and to be honest Maranello just tried to take the piss. Left with them for 2 weeks and self evidently they didn’t put it on trickle charge before they got around to look at it as they called to say “battery is flat it’s and £125 to test”… 🙄. Given I’d only just put a new one on at £95 I pushed back. They then gave me a list totalling £3650 for unnecessary / not mandated within service schedule but “advisory” items… such as £240 for a windscreen wiper.. needless to say car will now go to local aftermarket service outfit with fantastic and longstanding reputation.
Jay my motto is if you want a high end car let’s say 40k always have half amount 20k to keep it. Anything goes wrong at least you have the budget behind you.
Yeah that works for 10k cars that too, have 5k ready to do the belts, chains, clutch, shocks, tyres, discs pads and calipers and a service. That way an old car will drive like new.
Jay? I gotta say mate?. I personally find you loads more entertaining than someone like Doug Demuro... You're like someone I could see blabbing at the pub with, and being very real about car culture...no pretense. I surely enjoy your channel my man...cheers and best to you!
The prices of exotic cars in the UK are incredibly low. In Australia the prices are double, $160k plus for a Ferrari 360, or £100k. F430s are going for twice that much again!
Regarding the cambelt change, you say thats the most italian thing, but in fairness the Germans did the same thing with the 986 Boxster of the time, because it just makes sense. Also for more DIY mechanics makes ownership that bit more cheaper as you can do the cambelt on your driveway
The F1 gearbox is not great. Sure it works well on the road but if you have a gravel driveway or visit multi-storey car’s regularly then be careful. It’s very “binary” so either stop go…. Not ideal when nudging up to a concrete bollard in the dark. Keeping your gravel well dressed will keep you fit.
Would love a declassified on the ferrari california. I'm torn between 2 or 3 car garage. Especially now my new job has an EV car scheme. Very happy to do miles in any car
Sam STG spent £20k on servicing his 360 over 25k miles, so £0.80 pence per mile. That’s not including tyres, insurance, petrol etc. And that’s all routine maintenance, without any engine or gearbox failures. By the time you add on other normal running costs (petrol, insurance etc), plus any depreciation, and you’re well over £1 a mile.
A few notes.. As an American I absolutely love the fact that the Lotus has a S/C Camry V6. The old V6 slapped in an MR2 is amazing. Ironic how the NSX has retained and gained so much value vs it’s competition. Annnnnd I value your videos far more than Ferrari’s LOL
I never had Ferrari on my radar until I started shopping a replacement for beloved '06 Vantage. I went and checked out the car. My expectation were low... But It was striking in person. Pictures don't do it justice. Bought it for a price I couldn't say "no" to, but was still on the fence. After having it for a few months, I love the thing. Definitely a keeper. I really enjoy the quirkiness of it. Easy to work on, parts are reasonably priced, if you know where to look. Solid 8.5/10 car.
Marvelous video, James! Love the comprehensive look at all the tidbits, with some entertaining facts thrown in. I'm still a bit lost as to why people did not choose the sunroof option seeing as the GTS version of the F355 was hugely popular. I would've gone for that option cause I do love sunroofs, but then of course, I didn't have the means to buy one new nor was anywhere near the driving age. I was however, a little child, and this was one of the Ferraris I grew up with. To me, the 360 always felt a bit more exotic than anything in its class at the time and I've loved the looks since the beginning - it was always a pretty car in my eyes, and I'm glad that people have finally started to appreciate the softer, more graceful design compared to the 355 or F430.
Design is in the eye of the beholder. I think age also plays a part. For me The 458 is the pinicle of ferrari design both inside and out given its date of being revealed.
Great to hear you mention the sunroof option. I love having it on my car and most people either have never seen it before or don’t believe me when I say it was a factory option.
I remember not being overly enthusiastic about the styling when it first came out... and then it grew on me to the point where I had the image at 12:44 as my desktop background for a long time. This car really does look stunning in silver, and as a convertible - not necessarily true for all Ferraris.
As @ichiban says the videos could be even better, yes they are very good, if you slowed down a little bit. Keep up the good work. PS: I much prefer the 360 over the 355, but without the challenge grill, please.
Excellent coverage of the 360 James, great detail and backstory coverage! At the end was thinking NSX (manual) as an option but mentioning the Emira was a (welcome) curve ball with ours coming to our channel in a few weeks. Great stuff!
Declassified 997.2 GT3. Not RS. Always RS on RU-vid and media. But the non RS'es are much more approachable and usable due to pricing and not revered in the same way by collectors pushing the price or driven mile down. More info on the 550 Premium please. What was replaced, what was done, how was the classiché and so on. Don't think that ever became a video
Wash your drying towels after using sealent or leave them submerged in water. Little pro tip will save you replacing drying towels that repel water as they are laced with sealent ;)
The side profile of these cars really is beautiful. And that rear end is classic Ferrari. Of every Ferrari made since 2000, the 360 in my eyes, looks more like a quintessential Ferrari than any of the others.
@@johnmitchell2269I actually like the 612’s headlights, they were the perfect shape for that car but I wouldn’t compare it to the 360 as they had completely different design parameters so it’s unfair to the 612, instead I would make the same comparison you did with the 360 & 430 in regards to the 612 & 599, I believe they made the headlights too small on the 599, the 430 & the 599 is when Ferrari really began to over-style their cars and it’s been gradually getting worse since then, the 360 & 612 both had a simple elegance probably my 2 favorite Ferrari’s of all time.
I'd like to see a mechanic own a 360 & give prices of just parts & how much labor/ time doing it yourself. Everyone gives high numbers for cost then find out it's reasonable for parts (depending on the part) but they pay labor for a ferrari specialty shop which I'm guessing isn't cheap per hour etc
Nice review as usual now - an alternative you didn’t mention is the F355 …. You are spot on with the Emira though, possibly the one to get if you were sensible (and not living in France) I’ll stick to the F355 though, in my eyes way prettier
I have a manual 430. I never was a fan of the F1. The only issue for me is the maintenance. The yearly fluid change. Last month I had to change the fuel pumps. This month the tire sensors have to be change out. In the states a good manual 360 goes for $120,000-140,000 on Bat. Both the 360 and 430 have a very comfortable ride. My friend had a 964 and that car bounced over every bump on the road.
Having owned one I’d say this guy is about 20% correct in possible isssues. I don’t appreciate his input because this is a car that has very few issues I’ve had bmw with way more problems and he is making this car seems like it has many issues. It’s a wonderful car absolutely wonderful
Jay, I love your videos as much as Harry’s. I find yours more informative and it’s much appreciated, because what I know about Ferraris can be written on a Post-It note. Harry’s tend to have a more technical and driving at the extremes bias, and together, we’re fortunate to have really good coverage.
There's a hot corner in Hell waiting for the person who created the paddle-shift abomination. Unless of course that's where it came from in the first place...
Buying is not the problem but running costs are if you use it. Most 20 year old 360's seem to have done under 40k miles. Ball joint creaks, 5k for a clutch, disintegrating exhausts. Its a pass from me.
Pre-Lp Gallardos are just amazing. Stunning cars and kinda happy they have a bad rep, keep them cheaper. Change the cats, do its maintenance and drive the shit out of it. Actuator could go out but well its a car.
Answer to the question in the title of the video is: Extremely! This video just proves the age old addage about Ferrari's: You might be able to afford to buy one but you're very likely not going to be able to afford to run one. Nearly everything that was mentioned that might need replacing (and this is a Ferrari so you can bet your life it WILL need replacing at somepoint if you own the car for 5-10 years), was "about a thousand pounds" plus, and I lost track after about the 15th item that was mentioned. Meaning? You could by a 360 for anywhere between £50k or £80k but it's going to cost you anywhere between £5k to £20k on top of that in ownership costs. That's not including fuel! Take away the "super" moniker from the car and that's an added expense that's extremely hard to justify let alone swallow. Even more so that by todays modern standards they're really not "super" at all (think Koenigsegg etc). Sorry but I can't believe any car is that special to drive. I'll take a 981 Cayman thanks.
You could literally buy a CS and sell it later for zero loss. The same cant be said for the 360M. The delta is miles apart. Both cars are great. The 360CS is about to go to the moon and I for one an very sad I missed the boat.
The introduction of the 360 Modena made me lose a lot of respect for Porsche and it's hyper cautious styling choices for the 911. Porsche has failed to regain that respect.
Great review! Is a V8 Vantage eligible to be compared to the F360? It seems to offer similar performance for better money, but maybe the driving experience is nowhere near to compare?
I owned my Vantage for 4 years and loved it! Super reliable, I'd argue that it is also faster than a 360 when given basic mods as they are so corked from the factory. My Vantage made 360 at the wheels with sport cats, race muffler and ecu tune, also revs to 7700 rpm and loves it! Dry sump engine to handle track duty, and I have tracked my 3x, and it is amazing how well the overall package is at speed. Everyone who reviews the Vantage only drive them on the street, they never know the car is built to feel effortless when actually pushed.
This was by far my favorite "achievable Ferrari". When I was in my early 20's I was saving up to buy one of these. Instead I bought a WRX, and put a down payment on a house. Growing up sucks 😂
Personal opinion but I would prefer to see a Challenge Stradale in my garage pretty much over any other Ferrari and that’s including if money was no object.
The 360 will feel far, far more raw than any modern Lotus. The 360 is a wild animal at the limit. Forget the Strad (stupid money for what it is) - I'm talking the Modena. Have big pockets. No I'm not Mr Cliché - I've owned several. Have big pockets at the ready. Also, make sure the variator recall has been carried out (use Aldous Voice guides on the net). In fact, use Aldous Voice / AV Engineering for practically everything 360 (or 430) related. I drive over 250 miles to get my car to him. Did I mention having big pockets? Enjoy.
Had a close up look at a Lotus Emira yesterday, and I was really impressed. The styling is magnificent, and the interior a marked improvement over Lotus of old. I'd say it's every bit a supercar, and just as well put together as a Porsche, especially in interior quality. The gear change too is glorious, just like an early MX5. I'd choose the Lotus over the 360 any day of the week. It's absolutely brilliant, and a terrific swan song as the last internal combustion engined car Lotus will ever make.
No it’s not on Porsche’s level, you found a nice example but there’s still quality control issues some of their gearbox’s don’t feel like they should, some already have rattling interiors, warped leather, stitching coming undone, and faulty electronics turning on and off. The 360 is not perfect either put at least it’s a real supercar with a proper V8 not some wannabe with a Toyota Camry engine.
Prefer the discussion outside the vehicle in this video when reviewing, I struggle hearing with background noise in cars being driven - my hearings not what it was !
I had a new one on order in period but I just did not like the looks, I remember thinking I thought it looked too much like a mid engined Porsche mash up, but the looks have improved with age
Please do land rover range rover reviews..especially jaquar f pace svr 1988 edition..range rover sport 2023 and range rover v8 2023 .looking forward to it..
360’s are pretty cars undoubtedly, but for £50K plus, I find myself thinking, all that cash for a car that only does 0-60 in 5 seconds. I’d prefer a quick Caterham 7 or a quick Elise, both without question better cars to drive dynamically, convertibles, they won’t depreciate and won’t rust and way cheaper to run. For my money an old Fezza isn’t that much of an enticement & is a liability.
Thank you for another highly interesting video, this being the only supercar I would consider buying. May I ask for a "declassified" video on the Maserati 3200 and / or 4200? Thank you
I can't help but think that if he had listed all those issues and mechanical problems about any other "regular" car, it'd be hailed as one of the worst cars ever made. But because it's a Ferrari, we all give it a pass and lust after it lol.
