How to delete photos on your phone to free up space but KEEP a backup photo on google photos (free)
1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device
2. Select one or more photos that are on the device.
3. At the top right, tap on the "3 dots" menu icon.
4. Select Delete Device Copy.
5. The photos selected will be deleted from your phone, but the google photos backup photo will stay.
Just FYI, if you use iCloud and you delete a photo from your phone, it will also delete it from iCloud so you will not have backups! I learned this the hard way, this is why I started using Google photos
