Declutterring has helped me find lost items and items I didn’t know I had

It is also beneficial for your children/heirs. My sister and I vowed we would not leave the amount of items, papers, etc. that our mother had left for us to deal with.

Great point. Losing a parent is stressful enough!

I think she was joking but Mom says she wants me to have to deal with her things.

As a widow (he died suddenly) and a person that was unexpectedly hospitalized for two months. I embrace decluttering. How do I get my senior parents to want to declutter? I fear something will happen to them and they won't be able to make decisions about their things.

I am so overwhelmed in trying to declutter. I pulled out too much stuff at one time. I have serious problem of letting go . I keep making my sorting boxes.

It is a challenging process for sure. Do small bits at a time. Walk away for a few minutes if you get frustrated!

I understand. I wish I’d worked harder at it when I had better energy.

Decluttering paperwork, especially medical and financial records are my biggest challenge as I file for disability. Another is decluttering and storing medications and supplements. These create the most clutter for older folks. I've got files for food stamps certification, Medicaid (not Medicare, which is another set of documents and filings not to confuse the two), Section 8, Energy Assistance, bank statements, bills, car maintenance records, receipts, tax records, social security related. I have boxes of supplements for different conditions, medical supplies from the DME. How do you organize them cheaply and neatly? Easy to find? I've yet to see a single YT video talk about seniors decluttering documents for various resource agencies.

I’m a retired early childhood teacher, paper- keeper ( hard copies are still vital to keep ). Try two pocket folder method. Use different color folder for each paperwork category . EX. Medication and supplements can be green for Life, FS Certification can be yellow, Medicaid can be blue ( blue is calming ) … Put all the labeled folders in a clear/opaque storage file box like Sterilite or Rubbermaid. Have two boxes as they are lightweight ,stackable and portable . As well as Waterproof. That’s what I currently use. I tried large binders with page protectors . Ive tried accordion files … neither was portable. If I need to take a folder with me to an appointment I use a TO-GO folder… put the items in , go and when I get home ,place the needed documents back into their original folder. Also look at YT videos on Emergency To-Go Binders . As a woman of a certain age … it proves very helpful in an emergency when your family may need pertinent information to assist you if you cannot provide the information. ALSO - choose a system that WORKS THE BEST for YOU. I hope this was helpful. Blessings and good health , Dobbie

May be useful for neurotypical people who have never considered decluttering previously (and who may need to downsize, or increase home safety). Repetitious, generic advice with stock videography.
