I was a minimalist from age 21 after reading Thoreau's "On Walden Pond"... My elders were "collectors and keepers" of everything! Guess who inherited all the "stuff"? I've spent over 25 years disposing and donating their items. Emotionally and physically exhausting! I think Americans are hypnotized by advertising from an early ages to "consume". We need to encourage our children to be "mindful" about what they want so that they don't squander their money on meaningless objects. Just my humble opinion! Thank you for sharing your experiences, Margaret!

My late mum loved to collect dinner sets and tea sets. She wanted to pass them on to us, her 2 daughters. However the house had to be sold, due to space constraints we could only take a few and had to sell & donate the other sets. LESSON : BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED & USE. DO NOT BUY TO CREATE HEIRLOOMS FOR YR KIDS.. Use that money to travel instead !

I upsized when I retired and am so glad I did. I was living in a condo with no privacy and no storage space. Now I have a beautiful house on the water on an acre of property. I can play the piano at 1am and not worry about waking up the neighbors. I love my big house.. and I live alone!

The first thing I’ve been doing to downsize is shredding all my old taxes, papers, and work related documents from the last 30 years. My next goal is to rid myself of books I no longer read. I have also gotten rid of old clothes I longer wear. I still have a long way to go but it is invigorating to remove the burden of stuff from your life.

Funny you say that: I had been schlepping tax returns from 1980 house to house! What the?? Felt great to free up a corner of the basement.

Oh, how I found this message timely and so important. I realize that I am not alone in my feelings that I must downsize - not just for myself but for my children that DO NOT want to be left with doing this for me. I have so very much to let go of. Thank you for this most important message. Truly appreciated!

I remember when my parents (who have since died) sold their house & moved to a senior living facility, my mom told me she did it for us kids so we wouldn't have to worry about the house or taking care of them. Wonderful way to think about downsizing!

As Americans it seems earlier in life we make ourselves feel better by accumulating lots of things. Whereas when we get older we realize we don't need all those things and that they are actually weighing us down. I've become a minimalist in the last 5 years or so. I just turned 61. I still have more to do but it is incredibly freeing! There is so much stress in having a lot of stuff!!

What timing that your video popped up in my feed. Downsizing right now! Our girls are on their own and our house is way too big for just my husband and me. We bought a smaller house on a lake and have moved about half our items to the new house. I’m actually enjoying the decluttered look of our house since it’s on the market. I’ve decided at 65 to use the good china and crystal, often. Rotate the antiques I inherited and collected with my dad. Our girls don’t want our possessions, their generation doesn’t value things. They are the “disposable” generation. I hadn’t thought of downsizing being freeing. I’ve gone into this phase of my life kicking and screaming actually. I feel 29 and forget I’m not. I have 30+ years left on this earth God willing so I best start living. It’s funny how I haven’t seen your posts for a few months and this particular one shows up today. Thank you Margaret, your words give me reason to pause, digest, re-access, and see things in a more positive light. 💓

Hello from NYC. I am planning to retire next year at 65 and yesterday I began thinking about going through my closet again and either donate or throw out clothing I don’t wear. My girls are going to inherit my 2 family home. So I will get rid of stuff they will not want. Thank you.

It was the sudden loss of my husband and taking on the responsibility of trying to look after a large garden and house on my own which spurred my decision to move from my historic much loved home to a much smaller and practical new build. It will be ready Spring 2024 so I have started in earnest - both of us were hoarders!

How timely, I’m moving in a few days from big 4 bd home to smaller 2 bd condo. Been throwing away, giving away, donating for 3 months now. I’ve never laughed & cried so much, the complete gamut of emotions. I’m excited to be only taking a fraction of stuff to my new place. I discovered during this process that I didn’t even like much of the stuff I had. Thank you for another great video💕

So true. Big house, lots of lovely things to enjoy which keep wonderful memories fresh. Done traveling. Love the chance to finally savor home life. Love entertaining and use my multiple collections of beautiful china, glassware and decorative objects. Am starting my own RU-vid channel to share my largesse of things collected and loved. Don’t offload your things to follow the minimalist “influencers.” They’re making money off their “declutter” mantra. Downsizing out of guilt or doing what you think your kids want or because you expect to be “liberated” is pure folly. Things can be touchstones of moments in our lives and special people. Things that may have no intrinsic value may be personal treasures to you. You will grieve their loss

The process of downsizing was physically and emotionally exhausting but well worth the effort. I moved into a studio apartment nearly 8 months ago and this is a perfect residence for me at this time of my life. No regrets. Age 67. Margaret, I’ve seen the video tour of your studio and it’s wonderful. Best wishes.

My husband and I downsized exactly one year ago. We sold our large home and moved into a smaller 3 bedroom apartment with a lovely patio. It was the hardest thing I ever did, but it was also the most satisfying when it was completed. We gave away furnishings and decor to our children, nieces, and nephews. We sold as much as we could sell and donated a truckload of goods. It was an overwhelming experience. I actually found a therapist who helped me tremendously throughout the process. It is the greatest gift we could give our children who live out of state and will not be burdened with this task when we are gone. My advice would be to avoid delay. I was seventy years old and I’m not sure my husband would have been able to blast me out of our home if we had waited a few years.

I am moving from a 4 bedroom house, from an island off of iceland to possibly Spain, its so hard doing this downsizing, on my own, so much stuff and at the moment so much mess. Minths ago, i went through dozens of photo albums and made 3, one for mt son and daughter and one for me , alot of work but very satisfying. Trying to get everything i want to keep on to one palette, possibly 10 boxes. Things i thought i wanted to keep, dont seem too important now. The thing i find hard hardest, is the things i cant sell, donate or give, is having to throw them away, the things no one wants. I have 3 more weeks...wish me luck !!!!!

Great story, 39 boxes. Sounds like a good title for a book about downsizing😃. It is an ongoing process! I organize and give up something or find another use for it every day. Yes, buy less, care for what we love. Even downsizing the beads. So true, Margaret, when you know where everything is it feels so good. I know where the scissors are as well and I found about ten pair in the process of downsizing😄. Not getting ready to die, getting ready to live❣️ And I don’t want to leave all this stuff for someone else to sort. I still have a ways to go, but I’ve come a long way in the process.

My husband and I downsized last year from an 1850 sq ft 3 bedroom house to a 833 sq ft, 1 bedroom apartment. It has great amenities such as gyms, free coffee and tea, a luxurious lobby and is in a prime location. It’s one of the best decisions we’ve made. You’re right, it’s freeing. We have a 5x5 storage space which we plan on going through soon. The process of going through sentimental items, clothing that you bow to get back into was a bit overwhelming. But we’re so happy we did it. Like you, we can travel without worry or asking someone to watch the place. I just can’t say enough about it. It fits our lifestyle now. We are more conscientious consumers for sure but choose to enjoy experiences. Great content!

I parted with the china that my Mother bought for me in Great Brittan years ago. It has been hard but I decided that the memory was what I have with me at all times. The day that she brought them to me and how many lovely times we shared a meal on them with such great pride. Strangely it felt haunting after she was gone and my kids have moved away so it was time to let the china go. We all have to come to terms with things in our own time and in our own way...this was mine.

My husband and I built a new house and while it was being built we lived with my father for a year. Everything we owned was packed into boxes (and there was many). Some boxes went into storage and some into a dear friends garage which she kindly offered. Whilst living with my father we took only what we needed. It was great and very freeing not being bogged down by stuff. When we eventually moved into our new home we had to bring the boxes in. Well, what a nightmare that was. I had forgotten what we owned and to be honest never missed any of it during that year. We ended up getting rid of a lot of things but there's still fine tuning to do. Especially the sentimental things from when my children were little. That's going to be the hardest I think.

Downsizing was the best ‘move’ for us. We had large lovely home, but constantly the maintenance became too much and the children gone. A smaller nest has given us freedom to not be shackled to all that entails living and maintaining a home that we had outgrown in our present retirement needs.

I was starting to believe i was the only one struggeling with downsizing...Moved recently from a big beautiful house + garden into what it so far feels like an airbnb. I don,t like it, i felt i was forced to trough my life away...books, pictures, clothes. paintings i adored...it was/ is traumatic. I have so respect for you living in that studio....how do u manage?? How long did it take you to truly feel home? I hope it will happen to me in time...but right now i,m lost here. V.

I too recently moved to another state where I'm trying to find a rental possibly in a retirement community. I brought some things that are in storage while I live with my brother and sister-in-law. I had to hire a junk dealer to clear out most of my house before I was ready because I underestimated the time I would need. I spent the previous year giving away things to my community and had barely made a dent! I put the house on the market too soon and was forced to pack quickly, perhaps that was better than dragging it out another year. I'm sad/relieved about not having the house and familiar surroundings. Once I've moved into my own place I think I'll feel happier about the lifestyle change.

I've ran across photos of myself where I was sorting boxes and Rubbermaids, at several ages. What a wake up call. Many books and programs have helped but the most dramatic change and progress has been from audiobook of The Art of Swedish Death Cleaning and investing in the Minimal Mom's "Take Your House Back" Course. These along with videos from Sixty & Me and Diane in Denmark have filled my life with hope. As Joshua Becker encourages, "Believe it will happen." Lots of self pep talks a year later and I'm finally making visible progress. Love you so much Margaret! Thankful for your input in my life.

I downsized 3 years ago. I got rid of over 3/4 of what I owned. I still have things I haven't used for the last 3 years. My condo is small. I started donating unused items again. I rarely have guests, so I don't need a 20 glasses and mugs in the cupboard! I don't need 4 sets of sheets, or 12 bath towels. And I lost weight, so I donated all of the clothes that are now too big. The things I have a problem with getting rid of are sentimental items from my grandparents, so I have been trying to get my cousins and my niece to take some of them.

Just came back from a friend's house whose daughter is trying to downsize her things because she is in foster care. The daughter gave us a lot of things and was trying to give us more, but we told her 'no' because we already have a lot of things. It got me thinking that I don't want to leave this burden on anyone else when I pass away. I am not married and have no children. I live in my parents house and have only a bedroom full of things, but when my parents pass, I will inherit their things. My mom and I already downsized her garage, but there is still a lot more things to go through. Trying not to get stressed about it. Thanks for the video!

I really needed to hear this . My partner has just retired and also been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease. We have a large house and garage absolutely full of stuff. So we've been forced into downsizing and decluttering for ease of life and safety. We have a small villa that we plan to move to into in the next year or so,so we really need to take this seriously and get going with the decluttering first and then downsizing into our villa. Thanks Margaret for the right words at the right.time .oh and I love your hair style the way you have it for this post. Much love ,Debra

1 yr ago Thank you Margaret for your beautiful advices. Wish I can accomplish the same things that you did. When my husband was seriously ill 6 yrs ago , I started decluttering his things , putting priority on files & documents from work . Next thing to do is downsize . He loved so much to shop when we travel abroad , so I started to donate / sell unused items. It has been 3.5 years now since he left and I am still not done . I understand from your talks that this takes time to complete because of the physical & emotional fatigue one encounters while doing it . At least now , I realize we go through the same experiences . Thanks again.

I never want to own real estate again!😁 I just bought a kayak and am so looking forward to getting out on all of the many beautiful lakes/rivers here! Not much!!! As for Nic nakcs! Don’t have shelves etc or tablets to display things , at first I missed all my pink items I had everywhere in my old house, but they’re only THINGS that don’t mean anything now ! I’m content with few photos of my family & maybe fresh flowers now & then !! Thank you for this video you’re an inspiration to lot of people including me 😘🇦🇺😀

Thank you 🙏🏼 Margaret for sharing your personal experience and your process of letting go of possessions; and expressing your depth in letting go sentimental keepsakes. I too have been in the process of downsizing for years now with a knowing my vital energy is essential for this process. During the years of building our lives we are in the life cycle to consume and accumulate. For some of us raising a family, creating a home, continuing educational aspirations and working at our careers we naturally accumulate. As we begin to physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually accept the reality of “ Time” in the latter years of our lives, many of us begin the process of letting go, minimizing material items and all that we cannot take with us when we leave this plane. This truly is a blessing for our loved ones who would be burdened with our “ attachments” after our passing. Downsizing is responsible and mindful actions ….and freeing for our mind, family and our Soul in this cycle of life we are collectively in.

Hi Margaret! I really love what you’ve shared in here. Truth is you and I are exactly the same, living in a single room ( which is not even mine, renting it). Mine though is a forced downsizing because it happened to me when I decided to separate from my husband (it was a painful experience) and what A way to down size. I left everything behind and I only have my car and one luggage with me. Looking back 8 years after, I have no regret doing what I did. I am now happier and it was a sighed of big emotional relief. Now, I am literally a single room and one luggage woman and yet contented.

My parents are downsizing now, from a waterfront property to an apartment in a centralised area near amenities. They are 79 and 81 respectively. They really should have done this ten years ago, as they now must juggle all this with medical appointments, etc. Their old house had stairs and a steep driveway that was slippery after rainfall. It was full of hazard's. They must sort out what's rubbish, sentimental items and what they can use in the new place. They had a lot to sort thru! Plus they're selling a boat, a trailer and two old vehicles which they'll replace with one newer one. Elderly people in massive homes must think of their children. They don't want to spend their entire weekends trimming bushes, mending the roof or cleaning the driveway because the father is too old to do the work. Once you're too past it to take responsibility for your property, downsize! Your kids will thank you, and you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. When one spouse dies, the other doesn't want to be left with everything that should have been sold. Where my parents are going, they can walk everywhere, and still have room to maintain their hobbies, though they are now so unfit, they can barely pick up a newspaper. With the move, my sister and i have to do it ALL for them. I hope they can enjoy at least five good years there, but again, they left it too long to act.

I hope your parents' move goes smoothly for them. It's good that they are downsizing now even if it would have been better for them to have done so earlier. Thank goodness they are doing this now while they are both ready and able to make decisions for themselves. And it's great that they are able to get rid of things. Too often the elderly wind up living in the same home for decades, never getting rid of a thing until they have accumulated an enormous amount of possessions. Then one of them dies and the surviving spouse is so overwhelmed that they can't get rid of anything or even think of moving to a more manageable place. Then when they get ill it all falls onto their children to manage. Your parents are doing themselves and their family an enormous favor by taking care of this move now.

I agree downsizing is the gateway to living freer and I'm so happy I did it recently. But I also agree that it's not always an easy process - all those thousands of tiny decisions - keep, give away, donate or throw away? Gone from a large 6-bedroom family home to a 2-bedroom flat and I love it! Light, airy, easy to clean and maintain and best of all I can lock it up and go away on an overseas holiday knowing it is secure, which I'm about to do in 2 weeks time!

I took the summer to downsize & have NOT done anything!! In my mind I see the result as rewarding in the end but, I cannot get motivated. I get depressed & overwhelmed looking at the stuff in my home & the home is too big just for me. I have 4 pets & most places will not allow 4 pets, just 2. I have 5 weeks left before I go back to work.

I do understand the overwhelming feeling about decluttering your home. Here are a few suggestions that helped me to get started and keep at it. 12/12/12 from Joshua Becker: During course of a weekend, put 12 items back in their right place i.e. a book on kitchen counter back to the bookshelf. Find 12 items that need throwing away and do it i.e expired can goods, medicines, etc. And lastly find 12 items to donate. Put them in a bag and take it to your favorite charity store. 2. Just focus on one small area at a time. I mean really small, like a basket of magazines, or the top of your refrigerator or one drawer. 3. Have a set day each week to take your donations to the charity store. My day is Friday. This gives me a goal. Some weeks I have donated a full car load. Today I have two large thrash bags of shoes and one small box to donate. 4. Give yourself credit for any amount of decluttering you achieve. Soon you will see some visible improvement. 5. Finally, is there a trusted ally, friend or neighbor who can help you with this process. It is amazing how much two motivated people can declutter in an hour. I hope at least one of these suggestions will help you. I believe in you, YOU GOT THIS!

@@1dfulbenjamin434 thank you for your response. I’m very familiar with Joshua Becker. I joined his Uncluttered Group in 10/2020. Never did anything with it. I haven’t heard of 12/12/12. I will certainly try this. I go back to work in late August I hope to at least put a dent in the mess. I took a screenshot of your suggestions. Thanks again for the tips.

I'm single and have always been somewhat minimalist anyway. I did downsize one time in my life from a 2 bedroom condo down to a 1 bedroom. I don't buy a lot of things, although i could stand to buy some new clothes. I find if you keep things fairly limited to begin with it helps. You need a lot less than you think you do. Plus I love to get rid of stuff as opposed to buying it.

I have a 2 car garage and I can only fit 1 car in it. I still have all the contents of my husband’s grandparents house who passed away a couple of years ago. I have spiders living in between all that stuff. We are finally going to deal with all of it when it’s a cool day. I really can’t remember what all is in there. Thank you for all the motivation you share with us. ♥️

We have just moved from a 2800 sf home to a temporary place, and apartment, that is 950sf. We have a storage unit with boxes of STUFF! UGH! - I think the most valuable tip you shared is give yourself a year. I underestimated the process of clearing through history. It is bitter sweet. I am fairly certain that at least 50% of tge boxes in the storage unit will be tossed out when we buy a small home in the few months. :) Planning to check out your simplifying site.

Thanks so much for the reminder that downsizing is done so we may live life better and more simply. "Clutter Clarity", with Laura... Helped me get started last year, as we are moving. She too emphasized the emotional barrier we face before we can get going. That realization brought down that wall and allowed me to begin.

As someone born in the States but living abroad for many years, I am perhaps lucky in that various charities have shops where you can give items that they will then try to sell to raise money for their charities. But even in the States, I learned that there are ways to give so that those who do not have can get the benefit. An example would be a shelter for battered women - often they might have women with their children - so toys that were in good condition, home items like glasses and bowls - these made great donations that they really could use. Giving what I no longer need has taken the better part of a year - I gave away winter coats - I told my hairdresser, 'I can only wear one coat at a time' - but Afghan women who had fled their home country with just what they could carry and who now were in a climate with much colder temperatures - so I gave my coats to a charity that only takes people who have been referred to them for clothing and bedding. It's downsizing but with that added bonus - trying to find a new home where what I give can really benefit someone else who has the need.

I started getting rid of things I don’t need about a half year before the pandemic started. The Minimal Mom RU-vidr is right. Everything you have has to be cared for. I started seeing that a lot of the stuff I had was stuff that just needed to be dusted. Getting rid of things I don’t like or need has been liberating. I continue to do it. Like Margaret, I know where everything is. It has a place. Our home looks much more peaceful. The best thing is that we don’t need a cleaning woman anymore. I can take care of my place myself. I have routines that are from FlyLady, and the basic routine and weekly home blessing or enough

I downsized after a divorce a few years back. I got rid of a lot, but I’m finding I still need to clear out more as there are some items I put away when I moved into my condo, that I’ve totally forgotten about. That tells me I really don’t need them, so that is my next project over the next few days.

Last year, when we were clearung out our crawl soace, we found a bunch of bixes that were all taoed and labelled. They had never been opened since we moved here 21 years ago! We laughed! Three friends listened to me talking about this over lunch one day. They all leaned forward aat the same time and said, "Don't open them!!" More laughter!!

Downsizing can be liberating! Unfortunately we as boomers have been a highly consumer driven lot. It used to be you passed your stuff down to kids. Well with the high priced housing market in USA kids can't afford a house. So here at least, you give to thrift stores that increasingly won't accept perfectly good items because they are overwhelmed with stuff too. Leaving many little choice but to throw items away. Very sad indeed! Have you tried "re-homing" a piano lately? No one wants them!
