Lover grey pants (I think they're worth another try. Maybe store them and come back to them later. Take them out a touch if possible), ALC belted pants (not a fan of the belt, but the fit/shape is great), Doen black pants (but in the right fit), Tibi red pants (even though they are single pleat, the drape of them is so flattering), COS beige pants.
I can't explain to a single one of my friends why watching you examine and analyse your trouser collection speaks to a quiet corner of my soul. Thank you for giving this very specific section of the internet what we want - this is so helpful!!!
Yes, it’s very helpful. And very timely. Just this weekend my area of the new climate finally rolled from 90 degree days to cool fall weather. It’s an ideal time to turn over the seasonal wardrobe and, in so doing, reassess what’s coming in and what is being boxed up…and WHY. And it’s an ideal time to pass along things which no longer serve the overall aesthetic. Observing the whole ‘try on’ process was a great reminder to be brutally honest about how each piece looks and feels NOW. Watching this masterclass in wardrobe curation helped to give me confidence to cull and the vocabulary to explain (to myself) what gets to stay and which items have reached their fashion expiration date. Thank you, thank you! ❤
Hannah, the people lust for storytime videos from you. The origin story of your argentine leggings was so beautiful and fascinating, and it was a story about a pair of pants you bought. I can only imagine what other experiences you've had, and how magnificent they would be to hear
This is my dream decluttering video. Other ones are just fast-motion and then showing the bags of stuff decluttered. I wanna be in the DECISION MAKING!
I’m sitting here laughing that I spent over an hour watching you go through your pants as someone who owns no pants, two pairs of jeans and a couple active bottoms. But it’s so nice because it feels like hanging out with a friend
omg, same! We’re snowbirds, and I have two pair of jeans here and I don’t remember what I have down south. If I have two more pair down there, I feel like that’s excessive and I’ll need to get rid of them. 😳 But I sat and watched this entire video and was fascinated by the whole thing! 🫣🥰😁
I really enjoyed this, and I feel like you are so brave to expose your wardrobe in this way - not just the beautiful things, but also the old worn out things, and honestly showing the numbers. I can see it was hard, and sending hugs, and a reminder that there is no "right" number of items for anyone, except what works for them. Also loved seeing your hands as you talked. Gorgeous.
Hi Hannah! I want to say how nice it is to hear someone speak publicly about the vastly different sizes in their wardrobe! Sizing is wild and it is absurd that women are made to feel self conscious about an arbitrary number attached to an item of clothing. Thank you!!
Remember that submerging wool in water will make it more likely to shrink and change shape! I hang my formal wool trousers out in the wind (and rain) for a bit and dry them flat, and they always feel rly refreshed afterwards. Idk if it's technically right, growing up in Denmark I was just taught to do that with wool 🙈
It depends a lot on the temperature of the water, whether you use detergent (and what kind), and how much you agitate it while submerged! I've heard of airing out clothes and linens (I definitely do that to reduce the amount of washes necessary) but I've never heard of putting it out in the rain. That's interesting, and I might try it sometime with one of my older sweaters to see how it works on knits.
@@rosej9686I don‘t feel like the original commenter was trying to be helpful to Hannah‘s case, though 😅 Dying a garment can be a good idea if the alternative is to buy more of the same thing in a different color and potentially throwing away something that has not been used to the end of its life, which is clearly not the situation that Hannah is in. I feel like Hannah can decide that for herself, though 😊
Sees Hannah posted a video that's over an hour long....gets popcorn and puts phone on do not disturb. I was in complete heaven watching you talk about pants for over an hour. Loved this video and thank you for sharing this with us. Putting yourself out there can be stressful and those that cast judgement about what is too much or too little can pound sand! Can't wait for the following clothing declutter videos. Much love!
Of course I love the more formal wide legged pants on you. My favorites were the grey ones from Lilly silk. I also loved the shortish casual cream colored ones just before the jeans. The ones that you need to wear at the hips. Such an amazingly cool profile, and the airiness of the fit looks stunning to me. I totally get the Oska issue. I have the same thing. I actually ordered a pricey chin-to-ankle wool dress with 25% yak to satisfy my need for being sheathed in warmth. I would keep the Oska pants. I love the quality and cuts of that brand, and having something not too precious would be good with a child who will soon be more on the move. I sometimes mend holes in a star pattern, which can (CAN!) be a good solution. Thanks for your bravery and honesty in actually pulling out all of your pants. I personally have shame around even showing a girlfriend how many pieces I have, resulting from different phases of life and body changes. So this video has done me good. I think you made great choices too. ❤
Just seeing this title in my subscription box I feel like I've found an old artefact in a cursed temple and soft golden light is shining upon me and I start levitating ❤️.
Hannah, this video was an absolute delight and entertaining piece of work to watch. I know you have your reservations about continuing in this format but in my opinion as a viewer it was perfectly executed, and included everything needed to satisfy us watching and gain a deeper devotion to your spectacle. You've said you feel overwhelmed at execution not being as clear cut in culling as you find yourself lingering on certain items, and on the if and how they'll fit into your future as body and function are in flux, but please know that a wardrobe cull is never going to be one and done, regardless of how devoted and clear minded you go in ! Wardrobe culling is always going to be an ongoing process, please don't let that in itself overwhelm you enough to not pursue the rest of your jungle of clothing in this manner (~: Edit : keep the oska pants ! all signs talk to future regret ! they look so darling on and the shape and cut is perfection
Hi Hannah. When you talked about your feelings of embarrassment mid-video, my heart warmed in sympathy. There are so many times when I have cringed at the evidence that I am not closely following the advice I give myself and others. I am such a big sister-ish type of person, such a Marcy! And somehow I take my values and the things I believe to be prudent extremely personally. Maybe I need to laugh more and cheer myself on. And, of course, have warm-hearted sympathy for myself too. ❤
I am so looking forward to watching this. However, I am studying for a mid-term at the moment. This will be one of my "Pomodoro Method" breaks during my study marathon. I'll have a study marathon interspersed with a pants declutter marathon! 😁 Be back in an hour! And then in another hour. And then in another hour. HA! I'm cracking myself up. It is possible I'm going off the deep end. Okay. Back to studying.
This is so refreshing to see. We are the same age (within a month), similar height (I’m 5’11” and I’m guessing you are tall) and looks like we are a similar size in clothing. I’m also a mom of 2. I know exactly what it is like to pull out clothing after a pregnancy and really notice the changes in my body. I’ve gone through versions of this so many times in the past few years. I know I’m not alone in my experiences with clothes and a changing body but it’s comforting to see another person talk about it and normalize it. Truly thank you 🙏
I'm in the middle of a seasonal clothing declutter myself, and this video has served as such a wonderful companion to that. Watching you examine the fit, the sentimental value and history of each piece has been immensely relatable and helpful ❤
Keep the memories (cut out clips of your beautiful stories for only yourself to revisit) and lose the stuff. I aspire to be as graceful and elegant as you. Thank you for being an inspiration to me in your strength and your vulnerability. This video has helped me on deep and superficial levels. I appreciate you. Side note. As your son gets older, it will be so nice to have nice but not precious clothing to romp around muddy playgrounds when he is not yet confident to navigate then on his own.
Hey Hannah! Just wanted to say how much I loved and appreciated this video! The inner dialogue about what you think we will say about the number of your clothes, how you are going about your declutter ect didn’t cross my mind once- all I thought was was what a gift to be given such thoughtful insight and beautiful visuals on every single item! Thankyou so much!
Saw this video and said aloud, "Yes, Hannah Louise Poston! Tell me about all of your pants!" and then I realized all over again how weird the internet is (but sometimes in a delightful way).
this is perfect even if you don’t declutter much because i’ve been very interested in learning more about your pants. i like your general style of pants and i want to get a pair myself!
For the Argentinian leggings, have you thought about framing the leather portions? They have an interesting texture, and I think having them on the wall would be both visually interesting and a nice reminder of your time there.
This is so indulgent for me after a long day of mommin…. I love pants too. And your focus on texture, material, fit, longevity, etc, is so refreshing. Your fashion content is the ultimate guide for me 🤠
Opened RU-vid for something to watch while organizing my closet and this was just posted ❤ not decluttering but I’m excited to get my closet in order with Hannah
Hannah, this is hardly hyperbole, I live for your clothing videos. Also, somewhat off topic but I just watched the Truffaut film Le Dernier Metro/The Last Metro (1980) and I have to recommend it to you if you haven't seen it because the whole film is in a deliciously warm color palette of 1940s reds/browns/ochres that is so your style
I’m about halfway through the video and just…basking in the calming sounds of your voice and your delightful aesthetic analyses. I wanted to add something as a fellow postpartum human, although I’m about three years out at this point. My body is still changing, and I know quite a few people who have or are currently experiencing the same. So if you have a piece that you love and the fit is off, I do suggest putting them in clothing purgatory for awhile, if you have the room for it, rather than move them on from your life. Also, I have found it vastly easier to declutter by season, as it is extremely challenging for me to imagine wearing “on the fence” pieces if they are not currently seasonally appropriate. I think you are on the right track here with the initial declutter, especially considering that you are unpacking your clothing and getting all your pieces settled in your new home. I would consider doing another, smaller declutter as the seasons change and you get more of that “in the moment” feel of whether or not an “on the fence” piece will work for you.
I love long videos! I Love decluttering videos, but they are always fast forwarded, so thank you for this immersive decluttering experience, love the detailed reasonings and showcase of each pants, very satisfying🎉🎉🎉
Gosh this was such a beautifully light video given its length! The little tango steps in your try on segments were such a delight to watch. This really has captured the essence of sitting on FaceTime with your best friend while they declutter ❤I know you said you felt you were somewhat unsuccessful in this declutter, but I think this format of declutter (perhaps done more often, as some clothing rises to the top as you wear them) might just be better suited to this season of your life, where you need flexibility instead of rigidity.
I was waiting for long detailed content like this. I NEED to do this to my closet too and it will be so fun to play this and do it along with you. Inspiration like girlfriends hanging out. Thank you Hannah for all the hard work you put into posting this!
This was so helpful and inspirational. I too have a postpartum body and it is hard to purge things that don't fit but that might fit later. Hearing your thought process is illuminating and I am always thankful for your philosophical musings whispering in the peripherals of my consciousness when I too work towards fewer nicer things. Wishing you luck and a greater sense of ease with the rest of your closet declutter!
Totally understand the post pregnancy body “re-settling”; I had a baby in 2022 and 2023 (12 months apart) and I’ve been very surprised at how similar to my “original” body I have gotten now that my second baby is 10 months old. Like you said in the video, my shape has changed in some ways, but I have been pleasantly surprised that my overall size has settled to being very similar pre-pregnancy. There are a few pants I got rid of post baby #1 that I truly think would never have fit me again (23” waist). However, I passed along a couple pairs of sweatpants that (perhaps) would now fit again! So there is absolutely no hurry to declutter items that might still be in limbo. Love your videos!
I watch your videos for your insight and thought process, I'm not judging the decisions you make in a life completely different to mine. It's also really healing to hear your lack of judgment about your size fluctuation, it's something I need to practice about my own weight gain. I'm happy you kept the red pants though, I i love red on you ❤
I *love* the story about fashion week in Buenos Aires, how amazing and magical. And you are right - you will never forget that, you don't need the pants to tell that beautiful story ❤️ (plus its all now beautifully documented here). ✨️
I love how detailed and in-depth the video is. I really enjoyed it. I'm already looking forward to the next one! ... and totally understandable that this process is not easy - especially when you've just moved, had a baby and so on! I hope you are good to yourself and don't put too much pressure on yourself! 💜
Nooo I think you should keep the comfy grey holey pants! It is awesome to have some clothes that you can get messy in with no stress, while still feeling comfy and looking good
Girl those white pants (the second pair overall) could so easily be let out in the waist. Literally like twenty bucks to a tailor and a few minutes of sewing.
I never comment but I've been enjoying your videos more and more for a few months now because you're much more natural than before in your videos and you let your personality shine through more and it's really nice (and you're very funny too !!). I was a little sad not to have as much makeup content anymore but in the end it's different but very cool too!! Thanks for your work 😊
Great video! Re: dry-cleaning, I thrifted a lot of dry clean only clothes and would recommend at home dry cleaning kits as another option. Comes with reusable bags, a spray, a pen for tough stains and a soapy strip - you put treated clothes straight into the dryer for 20 min and then hang right after so they don’t wrinkle. It’s a game changer!
As someone right in the midst of body fluctuations postpartum but heading into another pregnancy - this felt like talking to a friend about the perils of getting dressed. You’ve inspired me to put away or let go of my too tight pants and invest in things I’m comfy in and actually enjoy wearing. Pants are definitely my most tricky clothing item (even pre babies!)
omg it's here! I'm going to save this for tomorrow though. I want no interruptions. I want to be immersed fully in pants. Just wanted to click and comment for the algorithm xo
This was exactly what I needed! I needed something I was genuinely interested in and could just have on in the background as I did a huge laundry list of home tasks that I had been putting off and was daunted by. It was so wonderful to sit with someone who was doing a huge task that they were daunted by and do mine alongside them and be distracted by all the beautiful things while I did boring labor:))) thank you!!!!
I really enjoyed this long form declutter, how you talk about and view your body is so refreshing. Can't wait to see the next episode. My favourites were the linen fox clementine, and the agolde sweatpants
When washing wool it’s not the temperature that is super important it’s the agitation, the more you move wool the more i,t wants to felt or tighten. Keep temp fairly low but movement to absolute minimum and you can wash anything, dry clean only can be washed if done right , wear and enjoy , love your videos I find you so calming and relaxing
I was so excited to watch this. I have been struggling to declutter my closet for some time now. When I saw this 1.5 hour video post, I knew I was going to be up all night watching it so I slept in the guest bedroom as not to disturb my husband 😳 Waking up inspired … I feel like you’ve given me the courage to do my own closet now ❤
Hannah, if you like your woolen pants with holes - on RU-vid you will find good videos on how to repair them by sewing them by hand. It's really simple, I repaired my second hand cashmere sweater in 15 minutes, the hole is only visible when you hold one layer of the sweater directly under the light source
The perfect video to mend to! I'm learning use a speedweve to make patches directly on woven clothes and gathering the supplies to learn sashieko next month. This made me grab the linen beach coverup that has become one of my favorite dresses and start working on the little hole it has developed.
omg i did not expect the TOP DOWN SHOT for this video 😭😭😭 there's something so funny and specific about it and it feels like i am the only one on earth that gets why it's funny
I appreciate your videos so much. I love beautiful clothes and often feel like I should have less after watching other videos on decluttering, but I like to dress according to my moods. Some days, I want dresses, some days I want trousers and some days I want to live in my lounge wear all day. But most importantly, I love variety. I have been able to narrow it down to the fabrics and cuts that I like, jeans being my least favorite as well. Don't lose heart, love what you love!
I'm really enjoying this video ❤ thank you for posting it. Edit: I was reading the comments and someone mentioned your earrings declutter and I wanted to say how much I love that video too and I'm exciting to go and rewatch it soon.
Wow! Such a huge effort. I think you've helped me get a grip on dealing with my own closet. I too find pants a challenge... Now I feel re-grounded and inspired. Thank you!
I want to let you know, I was a little ridiculously excited when I saw a 1.5 hour pant declutter coming from you. It reminded me of the earring declutter, which is probably the most rewatched video ever. I can't explain it. Despite the baby cockroach. I just loved the earring declutter. I'd love to see more long walk throughs like this even if it is more of a collection video than a declutter.
@HannahLouisePoston Lol, it amused me how excited you were about it. There would have been squealing and horror from me. You'd have thought an axe man had invaded my home to attack me.
The grey Oska lantern pants are incredible. They fit you great, the shape is amazing, the fabric looks somehow comfortable despite them being more formal looking, the repair looks easy, etc etc. If you don't want them...I DO! Also, the Tibi pants looks great, including with the matching fabric belt. We have the same pant aesthetic - pleated, high waisted, paperbag, lantern, etc. My body shape is so different though. I am 5'3", curvy, and have a big butt : )
“The night happened” 😂 I understand lol. Thank you for this video! I loved hearing your thought process. Don’t feel bad about the quantity of pants being at odds with your philosophy on consumption. You are human, after all, with seasons of life. I think this process was very aligned in any case! The process of streamlining is indeed a process and not every choice will be perfect. So sometimes, we just let that almost perfect and used to be perfect stuff accumulate in dark corners. Nothing illuminates those corners like packing up every item you own, moving them, and unpacking them! You noticed how the excess made you feel and took steps to streamline it. Nothing wrong with that. I also really enjoyed seeing some of your featured favorites again! Like those highly adjustable paper bag waist pants.
Though my enjoyment of this video was clouded a bit by what you shared in your previous video about this decluttering process, I still love to see what’s in someone else’s closet, and I particularly love seeing your pants collection! And as always, it’s relaxing just to hear you describe things in your unique way. I’ve got major pants envy as someone whose waist and leg dimensions are so rarely if ever represented in RTW clothing.
I really enjoyed this video and I loved the backstory on all of your pants. You’ve inspired me to do the same with my closet. (You’ve also inspired me to buy a pair of the Ozma field pants. Thanks for the wonderful content.
This video is pretty well what I do twice a year when I swap out my winter and summer clothes. Things go into a donate pile and a limbo pile, and I try on anything I'm unsure of and check the feel and how it looks in a mirror. After a while, when I've had time to forget what's in there, I go through the pile in limbo and either donate or keep. This arose from the year when I did a MASSIVE declutter that taught me that if I'm utterly ruthless, I will have regrets. Thus, the more frequent declutters and the ever-shifting limbo box. Having a permanent limbo container is a nice way to remove things from my life so I can see if I miss them without having to make a decision I'll regret. Just wanted to put that out there for anyone who struggles to let go of things as much as I do. It's okay if that process is never truly over. Just arrange it so that you feel okay with your system. Mine is not perfect, but it keeps me from panic-stashing it all in the attic instead of decluttering.
Oof. Trousers are difficult emotionally. I applaud you❤ As a sewist and fiber crafter and nerd, unless something has serious internal structuring you can probably machine wash it. Check for delicate attachments (buttons usually). I wash all my dry-clean only items by placing them in a delicates bag then using cold wash minimal agitation cycle. Air dry, and any reshaping is easy to do by lying them flat and pushing the fabric how you want into drying position.
I did not anticipate crying during this video, but I broke my foot 8 weeks ago and while I am off crutches, I will be in my inelegant hiking boots for another month. So thanks for dancing ❤ reminds me that time truly can heal.
Here at age 53, pants are really challenging due to body changes, working from home more, and an overwhelming desire for comfort. I'm finally getting back into jeans after a long break, and experimenting with a new silhouette for me: wide-leg pants. I've been a slim-fit and cigarette leg girl forever. But I've found some amazing pants in structured jersey fabric from local NZ brand Kowtow (their Drape pants if you're interested), and some silk/satin pants from an AU brand called Seed. I decluttered at least 15 pairs of skinny jeans that 2019 Jody loved. Age and stage, all good.
The Bueno Ares leggings are ones you should take a photo of, for the memory reminder, but declutter the leggings themselves because you're right they don't look good on you. By the way I love hearing the stories behind each item.
I also just had a major reckoning with my massive pants collection. I, too, have a very particular relationship with my pants and how I feel about my body and I decluttered something like twenty pairs of trousers I had no business owning in the first place. It was such a relief...
Have you considered throwing the moth hole pants into the black dye bath with the other pants you'd like to refresh? Always LOVE your mindful decluttering! ❤❤❤
I love this. And I think we need to normalize our bodies fluctuating and not necessarily getting rid of clothes that don't fit us right now because we realize we'll probably fluctuate again.
Well done on the declutter. I love watching people downsize. I expect that there will be a round 2 once you have been through everything. I own 8 pairs of trousers and bottoms, and it still feels like too many! I look forward to seeing the next round of decluttering. Nice work.
If it’s something you’re interested in, I would love to see more content on the way you do small sewing modifications to your clothes! I’ve started watching some instagram creators who repair things like holes in denim, moth holes etc. and the results are really mesmerizing. If we are going to buy and love things for a long time, it seems like repair is the “next frontier” after we all learn to make wiser decisions re: style and quality fabric. In other words, I’m team gray moth pants staying for now!
