Decoding HFDL ACARS with a WebSDR and PC-HFDL

This video demonstrates how to decode ACARS messages transmitted via HFDL (High Frequency Data Link) using PC-HFDL.
You do not need your own Software Defined Radio or HF antenna to perform the decodes. There are hundreds of people who make their SDRs available via the web at no cost to you.
To see my video on using Web SDRs check out • 2020 SDR Guide Ep 2 : ...
To see my video on decoding HFDL with your own SDR and HF antenna, visit • How to decode HF ACARS...
In this video I used the WebSDR hosted by the university of Twente in the Netherlands - websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/
I also used Vincent Burrell's free VB Audio Cable to route the audio to PC-HFDL.

Thanks Rob you have been instrumental in me getting into SDR; been an avid PC-HFDL user for many years, the guidance on Virtual Cable was a real insight , plus will be going through other vids to get my head around using SDRUno/Inmarsat monitoring amongst other things.

Wow another great video Rob I never knew that this was even possible, your incredible knowledge on SDR's just keeps amazing me I always look forward to your videos as soon as I see them pop up I've just got to watch them to learn something else new. It looks like you are a bit of a fan of RTL-SDR's, I've got 2 V3's I've had one fail with the dreaded heat problem and is being replaced by the supplier the other V3 is great it goes flat out 24/7 and never even cracks a sweat. I'm just about to purchase a 9:1 Nooelec Balun after your last review.

Morning Wayne. Yep, I've got 5 RTL-SDR v3 units. Haven't had any challenges with them at all. They've been rock solid whether covering VHF, UHF, SATCOM or even HF in Direct Sampling mode. As you saw on a previous video, I get broadcast FM interference breaking through on airband if I don't employ an FM trap (filter), but that is the only place it happens. And that's also partially caused by the multicoupler that adds a couple of dB to the output of each of the 8 signal splits. The NooElec baluns are definitely good, although there are some even less expensive ones on eBay coming from China.

Once again, great video Rob. Just a tip, you don't need to keep reloading the KML file. HF-DL will update it when it gets a new lat/lon aircraft and GE will read that update. Its all live. Just let it run and watch the tracks build up. Also dig into the DDE output of PC HF-DL, with just a tiny bit of help the DDE output will provide links to the 4 main sites (FA, ADSBEx, RB and PF), so you can just click the link to get the aircraft location, no retyping required.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, Google Earth was doing updates the previous time I used it with PC-HFDL but this time it seemed a bit slow, so I did the reloads. I haven't messed with the DDE - not even sure what that is. But being able to link directly to those sites would be super!

@@FrugalRadio To get started quick and easy with DDE and PC HF-DL, do a Google search for "posfix sbs acars" and install that free software. It has a one click button to connect to the DDE feed and will map HF aircraft positions (and other stuff). DDE means Dynamic Data Exchange - its an old Microsoft 'standard' for sharing data between applications. There is a lot you can do with it.

You mentioned active ground station frequencies being displayed in pchfdl. I only have time slots displayed. Is there a settings change I need to do in pchfdl? Another great video by the way. Thanks.
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 2 года назад
You can get the frequencies to display by updating the System Table file. For that you need to have the licensed version of PC-HFDL. Try googling System Table 51 for the zip file you need. Then copy the files into the appropriate folder in your PC-HFDL install directory.

Ah, great, another time sink. :) Thanks, Rob. Hoping there's a way to monitor planes in SE Asia where I live vs. Europe.

The international aviation frequencies, and the flight tracking frequencies are the same globally. So you'll be able to monitor aircraft transmissions for sure. I've got several aviation related episodes which will guide you through the process if you haven't seen them already. Some of the sources I highlighted will probably have frequencies for your nearest airports as well, but I'm sure you'll be able to find more local sources as well.

Great video. A question hopefully you can help me with. It deals with the PC-HFDL Log file. I have checked the three boxes in the log file set up screen. The log file doesn't show the flight number, lat, or long. I would like to see the data that shows up on the main screen in a log file, such as: AIR 07:18:20 UTC FLT FDX907 ?????? ICAO ?????? AID B1 LAT 47 13 41 N LON 176 56 10 E Is there a way to do this? Thanks, George

The guys over at the ACARS group on groups.io would probably be able to help you with that project George. Might be worth giving them a shout. There is a distinct sub group for PC-HFDL.

Almost every interesting channel/agency here I live has gone over to using digital transmissions. That's police fire rescue medical etc. Are there any way to decode them?
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 2 года назад
In some areas, all the good stuff is Enc. You aren't alone in not being able to monitor the emergency services any more. There is no general software for decoding encrypted transmissions, and doing so would be breaking the law in many countries.

Hi, thanks for your question. There's a link in the description of my other video about HFDL. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eaUWdFtzFxM.html It is free to download, but will time out every 5 minutes unless you purchase a license.
