This is a tip I read years ago about choosing a paint color. Instead of painting a small swatch on the wall, paint a good size piece of cardboard , which you can then move around to different locations in the room to see how it fits with your furniture and the natural light. Loved the video.

I’m no expert, but doesnt the paint colour respond differently on a cardboard material than an actual wall?

they make “paper/plastic” sheets of a decent size to paint as a sample wall. you can move it about…against moulding and furniture and paintings etc. they represent the true color of the paint. It is inspiring to see that you value process and thoughtful reflection over speedy, dramatic transformation like many other channels. Thanks for the video - it added a lot of light to my day!

I agree. Nicholas has very traditional taste. He wants his home to reflect his taste and to house his beautiful things...which make him happy. His home should not and probably will not ever be "finished". They will reflect who he is and where he is in his life at any given time. I hate rooms that are so "decorated" that if you move a book 2 inches to the left or right on the coffee table the entire room looks "off". I also hate rooms that look as though they are not really LIVED in. Nicholas has a good handle on his taste, style, and what he wants to build toward.

And might I add how refreshing it is to watch a RU-vidr/Influencer/Designer who actually takes budget into consideration and speak about it. It's surprising to say, but it's usual on RU-vid. It makes him more way more relatable and inspiring. You don't have to be filthy rich to have style. I'm looking forward to watching the transformation of his home in time, just like the majority of adults making a home:)

Hi Nicolas, may I offer a suggestion? Instead of painting tiny samples directly onto the wall, paint some large poster boards instead. This gives you a much larger sample and allows you to move the samples all around the room into different lighting conditions. Also, darker colors appear much lighter once they’re on larger surfaces.

This is so important, those little squares of paint just don’t give an accurate idea of what a color at all and often are overly influenced by the existing wall color.🙂

Personally think your instincts for the darker color is spot on and will bring the walls in, making the room feel more cozy and provide a nice contrast for all of your light furniture, white accessories and light rug of choice. Thought your painting would look great over the fireplace but not sure of scale. Large mirror in dining room making panels on either side with wallpaper and moldings. I’m loving your soft style and the new chairs will look fabulous.

Beautiful tour. Consider the painting over the fireplace, the mirror in the dining room, the desk as the focal wall across from the front door and the small table for the key drop with 3 botanical prints over. Add plants to the corner round table, throws on the bench and candles everywhere and voila! Heaven with no expense🧡

Consider painting Mouse’s Back in dining room. I think dark color walls with candles is elegant dining. That would be daring to do until you can wallpaper. Also like the idea of the painting over the fireplace and mirror in dining room.

Can you use the Mouse's Back paint for a closet or inside the cabinets in the kitchen? If you love it, you love it. Just not in the Living Room.
@deborahmac1997

Love your ideas for the color. I was leaning into the Old White myself. Have you considered applying a chair rail in the dining room, painting the lower half and papering only the upper? I think it would still give that beautiful transitional veiw from the living room. Wainscoting would work with your furniture and architecture of the space. 💞

@deborahmac1997

@vickym9221

Wood is sort of expensive right now, so maybe he could just do a focal wall with the wallpaper instead? He could leave the white or use paint on the other walls. Mouse's back would tie in nicely because of the brown stems in the wallpaper. However, he's said it's an even darker room than the living area so he probably wouldn't want a dark, dramatic color in there. I painted a burgundy focal wall in the darkest room of my house because I like a moody vibe, but I know not everyone does!

in my old home which was cottage style, I painted the guest room "Ethiopia" by Behr. the room was north facing and not much light. I fell hard in love with it. I then did my master bedroom in it, including the ceiling! My friend fell hard for it and used it for her den, again, north facing. I was so afraid it would look dull, depressing, and too dark (it was 2 shades dark that mouse back). It was so elegant, cozy and opened up the room, oddly enough. It was glorious with the light colored furniture I had at the time. Do it! Do it! Mouse Back! :) I'm enjoying your journey. Thank you for taking us along!

Because it's a basement flat but quite a bright one compared to some, you don't want to lose any precious light and airiness you've got ! Choose the lighter paint as it will still be the muted background colour for all your furniture / pictures. Also the sisal rug will be something plain to match all the patterns already in the room and be far more hardwearing. I think having to budget when setting up a room or house is a good thing. You think about what you want a bit more, and it is so special when you can finally buy it and enjoy it at home. More often than not I have been glad not being able to afford to buy a piece of furniture or decoration right there and then, because it probably wouldn’t have been right, or I changed my mind later. You usually have a choice to have the property furnished or unfurnished. You sign a lease and you strict to the terms. A private landlord might be more flexible but not always. I would love to see a color between the Mouse”s Back and Old White. I think that would be lovely. A soft shade somewhere in between that would probably look wonderful in your living room,.

Very best wishes in your new home ... absolutely beautiful! I love your emphasis on "working within a budget" and actually "saving" for those special pieces you really want. So many just click their fingers and everything is done, money no object. My mum always told me that when you work towards and save for something you really have your heart set on, you appreciate it so much more and it will give you so much more pleasure. I have found this to be true. Style, elegance and grace cannot be bought ... you have these in abundance! Stay well. Sarah x

Dear Nicolas, choosing a color is a great temptation. This brighter color promises more optimism in the atmosphere of the room. It is special because it has a green undertone, a really unusually beautiful color, much more beautiful than the color of sand, which is most often recommended to fit everything. I look forward to your new videos- I wish you all the best.

Liking the new abode and your interesting decorating. A few years ago, I painted my hall with “Mouse’s Back”. I was delighted with the name of the paint and really love the color. (I thought about painting the exterior trim on our brick house with “Mouse’s Back). The hallway trim is a soft white, but I think I might prefer a cream trim, after seeing the photos in your presentation. Continued success with your decorating and enjoy life!

Hi Nicholas! Please reconsider the darker color! I think it looks so rich and would be so different from your last place. Maybe you could paint one room and live with it for a while to see what you think? As they say, “it’s only paint” and you can always change it if you absolutely hated it!
@Ka-kz2gu

I think you should be brave and go with the darker color leaving the fireplace white. Then use that lighter color in dining room. Then use the wallpaper you do have and do one accent wall in the dining room the wall you see from living room. I’m glad you’re feeling better.

Thank you for updating us on yourself (glad you are feeling better!) and your lovely new apartment. Although I loved the “Mouse Back” and was hoping you would decide to use it, I can understand that it may be too dark for a basement apartment. At the parting shot of this video where you showed the fireplace wall, the sconces you have there seemed a little incongruous with the rest of the decor. Thank for sharing your thought processes and plans with us.

In another setting "mouse's back" would be right, but because you are in a basement apartment it is looking too dark. The pictures you showed as an example of how it looks were not in a lower part of a house. And even though you are getting plenty of light, it's nowhere near what you would be getting in an upper floor---and winter is coming soon! That picture of the "two ladies" was of Dido Elizabeth Belle and her white cousin. I have a great print that I found in the trash when I lived in New York City! Had it reframed and it looks great. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth a lot of money and someone threw it in the trash without realizing it---wishful thinking.

I do like the “mouse is back” but living on a lower level you don’t want to retreat to a mole hole and that would be the feeling that I would have returning to a dark color like that on my walls. The dark white is elegant but who knows maybe you’ll come up with something else you like. 👍💕 enjoy your videos.

The furniture layout is looking so nice and must be starting to feel like home. I like the mouse's back color. With white trim and your lighter furniture plans, it would be a nice contrast as well as being cozy. Your occasional chaira might look too similar to the walls if you use the old white color. Have you though of reupolstering them in a print? They look so nice on either side of the fireplace. Did you buy this place or are you renting? Here in the states, in most rentals, you have to paint back to the boring white they usually have when you move in. Is it not the same in Scotland? I like your realistic approach to your decorating. There is nothing wrong with planning, saving, and waiting for EXACTLY what you want!
@teresaemery1339
@teresaemery1339 2 года назад
I also was wondering about spending the amount of money on the walls (Mouse Back is great!) if you are just renting. That may be a US thing, but if you’re going to save for wallpaper and then have to leave it when you move.... I don’t think I could do it.
