The tenor saxophone. No other instrument is more closely associated with the sound of modern jazz. Just the first few notes from a well-played tenor seem to conjure up images of smoke-filled clubs with appreciative, head-bopping patrons. Throughout jazz's history there have been great tenor players whose names are mentioned with reverence by jazz fans. Names that require only the first, the last, or the nickname for instant identification. Names like Hawk, Prez, The Brute, Sonny, Trane, Dexter, Jug and so on. It stands to reason that with an instrument so adored by the fans and players who were adored even more than that, that some would get together on occasion and just play the music. Jazz history is rich with many legends. Its two tenor tandems are an especially cherished traditon. Dexter Gordon & Wardell Gray. Sonny Stitt & Gene Ammons. On one recording there was John Coltrane & Sonny Rollins. There was Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster. The list reads like a who's who of jazz. On that list, no duo played with more fiery pyrotechnics than Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin. Affectionately known as "Griff & Lock" by fans, this duo teamed up many times throughout their careers. But it was during the earliest parts of the 60s where they really burned through some great music! Here they are playing a tune written by the bebop drummer, Denzil Best, that is a perfect vehicle for showcasing their respective talents.
