Don Dokken talks about touring with Twisted Sister, Filming the MV for "Just Got Lucky" and the release of the new album Under Lock and Key which was released November 9, 1985.
Those three are all really close and are all great I'm their won way I find there is more filler on Under Lock and Key I think tooth and Nail is my favourite but Back Gor the Attack might be the best tbh
I was born in 83. Missed out on seeing all the 80s bands because I was a baby/toddler when all the best bands and albums were coming out & I'm from California where most of those bands came from. By the time I started getting into metal, it was the mid-late 90s when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, by that time all the popular "metal" was untalented numetal garbage which I hated, but I was listening to early Metallica, Ozzy, Dio, Megadeth, Slayer, but I loved 80's Dokken too, and RATT. I was an 80s metal fan in the late 90s when real metal was unfortunately dead for the most part.
I remember watching this when it first aired on MTV. My mother hated that I had a poster of Dokken in my bedroom because she said that they " looked like weirdos" however, 1 year after she passed away, I had an encounter with the band members and they were very nice, encouraging and very humble. They loved their fans and weren't arrogant at all. A lot of celebrities could learn lessons from people like this.
I remember this was the 1st Rock/Metal show in the 80 on Mtv. The 1st episode I ever seen was one were Dee was under a muscle car working on it doing intro's for video's, of course he was faking but that was the set up. Great memory thanks!
I met Don Dokken in person in 1997 and he was really nice to me, i heard that people have said he is a egomaniac and all but when I met him, he wasn't like that at all, he was pleasant and sweet to me, maybe because I am a cute blonde chick? I don't know ;)
the radio stations killed Heavy Metal/Hard Rock, most sold out to Alternative and College Rock. although a few stayed true, and still do. i miss the days of Q102 and The Zoo here Dallas, TX.. and of course OKC had THE KATT and East TX had 96X. the ZROCK folks had a good thing going too. i remember while vacationing in Honolulu in 92, they had a ZRock station =)
99.1 Zrock. Dude. You brought back some memories. Q102 and Weird ass Wednesdays lol. Those were great stations that played great rock. Used to have cassettes of night rips from those so I could jam at school lol. I grew up in Grapevine
I saw Dokken at the Monstah’s of Rock Arena here in Massachusetts in “89” and his voice was shot! He must have been having a tough go at that particular venue.
When it comes to personal space everyone has their own comfort level. Dee is one of those people who doesn't have an issue with this and very comfortable being in close proximity to people. Don isn't like this you can see it in his body language. He tolerates it and seems to get more comfortable as the interview goes on. Also a good opportunity to promote your album and new music.
@@karenmonson9893 Yeah, I noticed that, too. It's kind of funny, actually. You can even see Don still moving his face back a little as he talks. I tend to be the way Don is, and I prefer that my personal space not be invaded. :-)
@@karenmonson9893 Yeah, the "social distancing" gave us a good excuse for backing away! Ha, ha! It doesn't bother me; I am who I am, and I let people know. I only hug the few people who mean a lot to me. :-)
No Nirvana was pretty good. Compared to the crap that’s out now they were good. But Alice In Chains was the best of that era and Dirt is in my top 10 albums of all time.
George is a jerk, i met him in person in 1997 and he wasn't all that friendly, Don was sweet to me though, must be because he likes sexy blondies like me ;D
Don was being sarcastic. Their feud was epic and it devastated me when the band broke up. Jeff Pilson said in an interview, that their egos got in the way and if they had kept them in check, their popularity would have taken them even higher. Big egos will always cause someone to crash and burn. Lesson to be learned, is that you didn't get to the top alone, it was a team effort. Remember the saying; " United we stand, divided we fall".
Don started out "shy" at the beginning but definitely warmed up and nailed this interview as it went on!!! This interview was "melodic" too!!! Still have problems listening to "Alone" without crying through it so only do it on an "upbeat" day!!! Same goes for "Home Sweet Home" by Motley!!! Was driving yesterday and had to shut the radio off so I wouldn't be crying and driving at the same time !!! This is really terrible isn't it???🤔🤫🤨😒🙄😬😌😔😢😭
Wait, what? From 1:26, Don said “ ppl say rock is dead, metal is dead” Well, plz somebody tells me, is that real what they said back then? I mean that was 1985, c’mon, those bands could get platinum records back then
In the early 80s they said rock was dead. That's when new wave and pop was getting popular. Sure some rock bands were platinum sellers, but in general rock wasn't the mainstream music and wasn't respected.
@@MetalMaster101 thx for replying, I’m not a 80s kid, so sometimes I have no idea what was really happening back then. It just seems to me, after Van Halen’s 1st record, everybody wanted to go to LA, and became a rock star. Then, Quiet Riot, Ratt and Motley Crue hit the Billboard chart, 82 US festival got 400 thousands attendances, it feels like early 80s was not that bad for rock bands.
@@ruiplas Yeah, rock and metal was definitely popular at the time. 80's was the peak for rock and metal. But it took bands like the ones you mentioned to kickstart the popularity and gain attention. Still though, as famous as they are, and as big as Rock was in the 80s. All the rock bands had to kick and scrape for everything they got. Some hit it big, but a lot didn't and went unnoticed and unsigned.
@@stephaniebeeboo2793 Don wasn't just nice to blondes; I had an encounter with the band in the late 80's and they were very encouraging, supportive, extremely pleasant and very down to earth and I'm a black woman !!! Back in the 80's, It was almost blasphemy for a black woman to admit that she didn't find Michael Jackson attractive ! Lol !!! Don was eye and ear candy to the max!!! ❤❤❤!! At the age of 58, I still have to catch my breath when I see pictures of him and hear that smooth, powerhouse voice. 🥰
