That was a cracking explore Mark. Very interesting place Cove, I've just been reading about it while trying to find something about your caves. On some of the maps there is a cave marked as Piper's cave. There is a Piper's cave on the south-west coast which has a fascinating tale of someone seeing how far the cave went while playing bagpipes... when the bagpipes stopped the end of the cave was reached and the people on the surface knew how far inland the cave went (4 miles by all accounts)... I wonder if your caves have a similar tale or if it was just the noise of the sea or wind that gave the name. I am sure you've already found this but for your viewers who may be interested: "in the New Statistical Account.^ One of these (1834), which relates to the next parish,Coldingham, mentions 'numerous caves and fissures, formerly the haunts of smug-glers', some of which, 'of considerable dimensions, excavated out of the solid rock, are inaccessible by land, and can only be approached at low water, and in thecalmest weather. Their narrow entrances are completely blocked up by the risingtide, and a gentle breeze from the east speedily creates a dangerous surf.' The other(1835) states that the coast of Mordington parish, between Ayton and Berwick,'exhibits a continued unbroken line of abrupt rocks, which contain some cavernsthat were much used by smugglers in foreign spirits before the erection of a Pre-ventive Station at Burnmouth'" journals.socantscot.org/index.php/psas/article/download/8660/8628/
Mark, have you checked the Geology One Inch, 1860s-1940s map on nls? There are two blue lines heading inland marked on the map... could those be your caves? maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=55.93965&lon=-2.34677&layers=196&b=1
I have just discovered your channel as we are headed to the boarders to visit relatives who are laid to rest there and I find your passion and delivery of facts and points of interest very refreshing and watchable, keep up the good work so us mortals don't have to watch the shite on TV 👍👍😊
There is another cave further up towards Thorntoloch. Been to if a few times but haven’t went too far in as it looks like it has collapsed. Great film by the way.
Yikes, I honestly had to close my eyes as you descended deeper into the tunnel and also felt a bit faint until I realised that I had been holding my breath for ages ! Fascinating video Mark and well done you on attempting that adventure. But for the good of my heart 'gonna nae day that' again 😊
There is another tunnel which opens up into a very large chamber where smuggled goods were stored. It has a staircase built into the sides as well. I wonder if they link up somehow?
