I’d really like to have part of the deep dive as a retrospective - go back to last week’s forecast and see how accurate it was and if/why it was different etc.

Forecasters never do that because it would then be obvious how inaccurate they usually are! Similarly all the waffle and repetition so that we fall asleep before they get to any point...

Loving the overall Summer deep dive, great breakdown of the last 3 months! 👍 Something I can't quite grasp is how it appears that how our insect population numbers appear reduced this year, on recent years, even though average temperatures were still higher than historical averages but weren't significantly higher? Thanks again for the great info! 👍👍

One of the things that I would like to see is a brief overview of the weather in neighbouring countries. In the summer, the countries across the channel and around the med so we might see what we will get if we were to go on holiday there. Similarly in winter, need to know if we can get to the good ski locations (not me - too old now anyway). But getting a bigger picture of where the weather is, where it comes from, how it will affect us...or having affected us, how it will affect neighbouring countries where we might have friends and relations

Currently, in the South, there are "Yellow extreme weather alerts for moderate rain". MODERATE RAIN? In England? We shouldn't be batting an eyelid, let alone getting a severe weather alert. On the weekend there were thunderstorm warnings and not a dark cloud forecast (and not a single storm in my area- something that happens more and more rarely in SW edge of London- I miss them big storms!). It's getting rather hard to take these weather warnings seriously...

Howdy Met team and Alex, great look over the Summer period, funny thing is I didn't think it was that much cooler or wetter or even windier and I'm in the West of Scotland, the ground was fairly dry for most of it, maybe it was a drier spring and that's why I didn't notice. Anyway, a thought for something to discuss in the future, as we go into the stormier months, it would be nice to hear a discussion over the different warning levels, the possible effects and precautions people should take, particularly around activities like work and travel. I noticed that a lot of weather warnings would go out and people just don't know what to do, they feel they have to go into work and get stuck there or on the roads. Same with travelling around, people just don't know what to do with the warnings even when they are given and there are no legal protections saying if there's an amber warning for wind and rain that they can stay home and safe. I think that's why so many folk ignore them because they don't know what to do with the warnings. Hopefully you get what I'm trying to say, thanks for the show and look forward to the 10 day trend tomorrow.

Absolutely brilliant - thank you so much for these deep dives! They really put flesh on the bones of the shorter, more usual weather programmes, and answer a lot of the questions I have about the statistics and how typical the season has been. I am also grateful for all the technology you use to illustrate the story, because I've always thought that presenting weather was like telling a story, only before it has happened. So much here to think about, and so well illustrated. I do find this kind of programme fascinating... 🙂

Whilst we have not had any outstanding warmth this summer I get the impression from my own observations that there is a more clear indication of warming of the atmosphere reflected in the nighttime minimum temperatures. These seem to be consistently higher than a few years ago, but such a trend would not be reflected in the average temperatures if the maximum temperature was suppressed, as appears to be the case this summer. Here in North Devon we are consistently seeing minimums in the mid to higher teens, which 20 or 30 years ago would have been almost unheard of, and whilst living in Mid Wales until a few years ago I came to the same conclusion. Perhaps this is something that could be looked at in a future deep dive.

Ooh dear, rainfall accumulations by Sunday, I live in a 50mm blue blob area that looks to be Gloustershire/Oxfordshire 😬 I'm not sure I understand, however, the Met office day to day forecast as it's currently displaying - is it still to be updated? The warnings are there, but where I live - under a 50mm blue blob area - it's only showing light rain with a 60 to 70 percent probability? Is this because we are looking at thunderstorm activity, so it's hit and miss?

The Deep Dive is always good. Cloud appreciation day is a great idea - As i work outside every day I find just looking at the clouds a very restful escape from the daily hurly burly. What I would like an explanation on is why is it on some days it is possible to see Jet Contrails but then on other days it is not possible to see them. On some days you can see many at the same time. I presume it is to do with the pressure situation in the atmosphere at 30,000 plus feet. If the air is rising contrails are visible or is there another explanation?

It was cool and wet though June and the first half of July, then it improved and the second half of July and August, apart for the last week were a warmer and drier than average. I am quite confident storm Ashley will get named for Thursday and Friday, strong winds from a unique wind direction, torrential persistent rain, lots of rain over tonight and tomorrow will saturate the ground meaning anymore rainfall will not be able to infiltrate and so then be surface run off causing floods, schools and businesses reopening after summer, some still on holiday, time of day, trees in full leaf, unstable weather pattern, a lack of recent bad weather means dead trees haven't yet fallen, so the first big autumn storm will tear them down, there are plenty more out of my 14 tick boxes for how I personally think storms should be named and warned, some people think its just about the amount of rain and wind, its about more, like the direction of wind, whether it falls over highly populated areas, the wind direction, the time of day and year, recent rainfall totals, how poorly built an area is, and much more.

There's always going to be regional variations, our summer was still warm by 1960's standards

@@Notasmurf-vw6to grateful? I'm not sure that's the best word for it, warmer weather is better for horticulture, most plants prefer warmer weather.

It’s not been too bad here in the SW of England. We’ve been lucky. We’re south of Dartmoor in the South Hams. I often watch the dark clouds pass us by across Dartmoor, whilst it’s sunny here. I’ve always assumed it’s due to the Foehn Effect, as mentioned today, as we get a lot of South Westerlies..?

Bit subjective and sorry if you have covered this before, but the weather seems to be more changeable than it was in the past. We have recently had a hot day, then a cooler day, then another warmer day, and so on (SE England). I seem to remember that we used to have a warm period of several days, then a rainy period of several days. Is there any meteorological basis to this impression of greater changeability nowadays?
