That's key for me (pun intended) because I play in DADGAD. Roman numerals make pretty much any tune transposable easily. And it matches my voice. So...more fingers please!
I feel this is not a guitar teaching channel, its a channel teaching musicianship, he just happens to use the guitar when doing it, but it fills alot of voids left from self teaching of RU-vid
I love these videos! Pro Tip: learn to use the RU-vid shortcut keys "j" to go back 10 seconds and "l" to go forward 10 seconds. You will be able to navigate videos during these reactions and deep dives without the need to get the mouse on the slider.
HOLY SMOKES!!!!! This is one of the best vids I’ve ever watched on RU-vid - literally captures the soulshine of Soulshine and the soul of the band - and didn’t miss the “young” Derek - FANTASTIC!!!!!
Man I've been trying to learn this from Marty but you got me playing It the way love it and thanks. by the way I'm a friend of Warren Haynes. we used to hang out together at the brass tap in my and his hometown. Asheville. he's even been to my house.. I never knew he would ever be the Super star he is now and im so proud of him. thanks for the lesson
Bro you are honestly a guitar legend. I love your teaching style and videos. You have helped me learn so much in a short amount of time. I have been playing for 15 years and have hit various plateaus. You have helped me break through several of them. I do apologize that I am not paying for your content because it’s honestly worth it. I hope I can in the future. I just wanted you to know even your free stuff has helped me significantly as a player.
Thank you for keeping the jam bands in new ears. This is truly the most beautiful and most intricate form of music. Warren Haynes should definitely be in jam band hall of fame
Bro this is hands down the best guitar tutorial I've ever seen. It's not long and draaaaawwnn out. It's really well delivered and explained. The WHY and the HOW delivered with a genuine excitment and love for the music . I have a lot of catching up to do thank you for sharing 🤙🏽
Love how all three guitarist where finishing each others frase, thats some real musicians right there. You bring up some great points on when to use certain melodies.
I love this channel and you passionately describing what’s happening with the intervals and the mixing of major and minor. I know , I know you have to make a living… but your free material is like hanging out with a fellow music fanatic , and now I don’t feel like the only weirdo in my family just listening to the same song over and over because of all the nuances that can easily be missed by the casual listener. But your right! That’s why you love that part of the song!
i love this song. I love playing this song. this lesson you created just rewrote how I play this song.. I'm not a music theory person, but you just showed me why this is the greatest song. Thanks for this
Your comments on this song are so, spot on. Your showed me that your taste in music is just like mine. I have played this song for years, but was missing many of the subtleties. Subscribed!!
great episode. amazing song. Love Warren Haynes. Took a friend to see Derek three years ago, at the end of the show he just looked at me and said that is one of the best musicians i have ever seen live regardless of instrument. His live sound in a theater is just unreal... unreal.
Michael you’ve done some Great videos over the years, but this one has got to be one of my favorites. It’s got everything; mixing major and minor, the importance of learning the vocal melody, “the tag”, the song theory… thank you for putting in the work, to help us all get where we want to go.
I've watched alot of these videos and am on guitargate. This video has a plethora of practical tips that we can use today in our playing. Such a great teacher. Never ignores any of the complexity.
Well, our state is burning (California) - stuck inside because the air quality is hazardous and I can't say I'm not depressed. This song makes me happy, and I decided to learn more of the electric version and saw your video. EXCELLENT! Thank you so much - such an amazing song, and I never knew that there was a version with Trey, Derek & Warren, my 3 favorite guitar players. Great lesson as always!
I attended all the Wanee's from 2009 until the end. It was a privilege to see this level of performance and though there are still exceptional performers out there I really miss lineup. Thanks for doing what you do.
Thanks so much for your passion, your clarity, and knowledge. Your intimate knowledge of the fretboard as well as the vocals and harmonies, really opened my eyes in a new way. Keep it up. Best, Copperhead
Recently also transcribed the album version of this. Great tune with great guitar playing. These kind of videos are pure gold. Glad someone is approaching music and guitar playing in youtube this way instead of telling where fingers go. Watched couple of your videos already and you went straight to my top 3 youtube guitar channels. More videos like this and never stop! 😎
Great breaking down of the song, the emotional side of the music, im 70 yr old and love this song more every time is listen to it, bout brings tears to my eyes, thinking about my life and life's lessons. Thanks alot for the lesson.
Man you picked a monster song to deep dive into! Thank you! This song is by far, as you’ve mentioned, the best of the best. As a guitar myself I have and probably will never successfully emotionally deliver to my own satisfaction a cover due to the respect I have for Warren and Derrick. Love what you do Michael! Cheers
Thank you for explaining the "why's and what's".....love this tune. As soon as we get back together my band will be doing this tune. Adding to our line of AB tunes for sure. !!
I just wanted to say thank you. I am a long time music listener who has picked up guitar tons of time with no avail, but I LOVE your channel. I love listening you talk about theory and musicianship and how music makes you feel. I have absolutely 0 musical talent, but if you happen to be in the Seattle area.. I would come take lessons from you just to learn how to listen and process music. REALLY appreciate all your hard work and your energy.
very much enjoyed watching this video, especially you relishing the mule's performance :D you gave a lot of honor to this great song. thanks for extra information too. good job!
Dude this was like attending a concert with a close friend, who knows a lot. Man , this was so much fun. Can't wait to check out your other stuff. Beautiful, just beautiful, keep up the good work. Thanks so much for this.
I have never come across your site before so I decided to take a look at this song, not only an Allmen brothers fan bjt Greg happens to one of my biggest influences. That being said.I have been lmaying about 1Year an 8 months but have taught myself everything through guys like yourself over this time. An recently been working on seeing an feeling these very perticular ways to play more emotjonal an J have to say the way you explain this is without a doubt the most informational and educational experience I ve had in almost 2 years. I ve done alot a work theory wise an proud to say I understood an made use of every word you said. Very connected to the way you brought this across. An I will be searching your library an learning much more from you. Thanks an you will be hearing more from me .
Man, I enjoyed this so much. You continually pick songs and artists that I care about, and this deep dive episode was a jewel. Probably the best one I’ve see you do yet. Certainly considering signing up for some lessons from you. Might be just the thing to do while chilling at the house over the next few weeks. Thanks!
Wow! This is the first of your vids that I've seen and the instant I realized what you were doing with it, I subbed! What a fantastic way of teaching a song, not to mention, style of play! I'll be spending time on this one! Thanks!
Your absolute right I have been at the guitar for.just 3 years but when I heard this song it just changed me I work more on my phrasing trying to make my guitar sing not easy but this guitar playing
My new favorite channel you are bring my days of running around the country chasing the dead, panic, mule and phish all back and letting me learn this shit I have tried forever.
What a song! And, one great lesson. Definitely gonna dive in deeper to this one. Ever time I think I've saw it all. You intrigue me once more Michael. This song has a great melodic sound, with an equally awesome chord progression. Thanks for sharing such awesome music with lesson and knowledge you can't find anywhere else. Your a great musician. Thanks for sharing your gifts to the world man. I'm taking advantage. 😉 😃 🙂
Warren is a freakin' beast! I've seen him several times. Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, The Dead. That man is amazing! I think his Dad cowrote this tune with him. I love that PRS! But I've said that before. Thank you for what you do brother! ☮🐉💀👽🎸🎶🎵😁
I saw Warren at summer fest Milwaukee one day, 90 minutes Mule set then one hours later 3 hours Of Allmans then 30 Min later 3 plus hours with Phil and friends. The man is a monster
I heard this song for the first time yesterday, and was hooked as soon as the intro solo started. Opened youtube today to learn it and was so glad to see your face pop up! Such a great teacher!
Ah !!! Lucky you ... It's a great song and it's so good especially when you first hear it .. lol it feels like you just discovered there is hope after all lol...
Great video, thank you. Just came across your channel recently (yes, subscribed!) and have been watching lots of your content and then came across this tonight. Huge ABB/Mule fan (and Warren and Derek and, yes, Gregg, fan, RIP), so this is really awesome. Really appreciate what you're doing on here.
RIP Greg Allman. Hate to say it, but when you said "no one does it better" I couldn't help but think..."maybe not, but Warren Haynes is sure as hell taking those reigns and is a hell of a vocalist and guitarist." Like you, he has been one of my favorite vocalists and guitarists for a LONG time. I need to see Govt Mule live before I die. I'm 31, so I'm hoping I have a long time before that day comes haha.
Love to see the passion for music when you play. I will never understand people who don't feel that way. I just want the music to come out of my fingertips. (After a lot of practice)
Oh man, this was excellent! Thanks for putting this together! I suspect any downvotes were people who didn't get that you were recording a loop at the very beginning and they bailed. I'm sure glad I stuck around. Great lesson. I'm a subscriber now.
I'm really loving your channel. Dead, Umphs, Panic, Phish, ECT. It's like reliving my 98- 06ish years but I get educated with not only the what but also the why of what I love so much. Of course there are many bands you haven't touched yet like moe. but all in time. Anywho, I can't pay you but I love watching your content. I think "Effigy" by Gov't Mule should be a video. Thanks brother!
Picking up from a few videos back... This setup and camera angle is pretty damn good. Looks pro with the guitars, amps and sound boards in the back. Having the superimposed video over your left shoulder works well too. Another great lesson! Thanks Guitargate!
U really nailed the intro... you really have a nice way of analyzing the songs and you really get it note for note.. .once you figure out the Key.... or the scale...
Warren didn't write this song for the ABB. He wrote it in the mid 80's when he was a mainly employed as a songwriter in Nashville. Blues artist Larry McCray recorded it in 1989 before the ABB did. The ABB version originally appeared on their 1994 album Where It All Begins and was only recorded after they considered themselves done with the recording process. In fact, Dickey Betts had already departed and returned home. Tom Towd asked them to record one more song and Gregg Allman had heard the song and suggested it. The band recorded it without Betts, but left space on it for him to add a solo, sent him the tapes and he recorded his solo at his home.
I’m going to the website and looking into lessons from you. Been watching the videos and love em- and you seem like a good guy to sit down and have beer with and talk guitar.
