It might be interesting to replace the LEDs with a LCD backlight panel from an old laptop for more even illumination.

I think I might have kept a bunch of those diffuser screens from a bunch of laptops I was scraping at one point. No idea where they went, but I'm pretty sure I kept them.

Wow...this video brought me back so many years that I had to make a trip out to the storage shed and pull out my 1967 original Lite-Brite! At age 7, I remember taking some gift money from my grandparents to the Thrifty drug store and purchasing it for $4.99. Surprisingly, I kept the instructions and insert showing the 5 different picture groups you could purchase (Group 100 suggested for boys, Group 200 suggested for girls, Groups 300/400/500 suggested for both genders). First-generation units used a standard 25-watt A19 medium-base bulb as the light source; they also lacked any power switch, so my dad helped me install a cord-mounted snap switch. Another (unfortunate) modification I made was taping red cellophane to the ventilation holes because it looked cool -- not realizing blocking these caused unwanted heat buildup. So...my Lite-Brite is slightly deformed on the top side. The perforated plastic grids were referred to as "peg screens" per the instructions. The "pre-coded pictures" were 9"x12", which gives you an idea of the original unit's dimensions. The package also included several blank sheets. According to the instructions, "The blank sheets used with your Lite-Brite are black construction paper. You can purchase additional black construction paper in your favorite stationery, art supply or chain store." Over the years I purchased a couple sets of replacement pegs. At one point, Hasbro changed the formulation for the blue and purple pegs; they were noticeably lighter in color, which on one hand gave you two additional colors to work with but on the other hand meant you couldn't match colors if you needed a larger quantity. A few other accessories I acquired that I believe were introduced a year or two after Lite-Brite: Number/Mathematics Symbols and Letters kits, which were shaped like the represented characters and had multiple "peg points" that were molded into each shape and inserted into the peg screen...and the Action Lite-Brite Kit. This replaced the two original peg screens with three specially-designed screens and an "action" lever that made contact with the bottom of the screens. Pressing and releasing this plastic piece shifted the back screen so that one set of pegs was illuminated in the "normal" position and the other set was illuminated when the lever was pressed down, producing a motion effect (which varied in practice depending on the design). It's interesting how this product has been sold for 55 years by the same manufacturer and has mutated over time partially due to changes in illumination technology!

My dad made an animated 30 second TV commercial for a local lottery back in the 70's using a lite-brite. "He" made it by locking a film student in a dark closet for two months. He melted several lite-brites using a 100w bulb. It was amazing at the time, with swirling rainbows turning into text, but I'm sure it wouldn't be now, for sure.

Maybe my memory is off, but I recall that on the old Lite Brites, the light shined through every hole unless you had some black paper in front to block it. It looks like there might be some kind of integrated shields on this one to block the light unless you put a peg in a hole?

@hotpuppy1
@hotpuppy1 2 года назад
That is why the Peg-A-Light knock-off was better. It had a foam pad behind the grid that blocked the light unless a peg was in a hole. After some time, the foam got wallowed out and some light came through. I'm sure that with age, the foam turned to dust. The evenness of the light wasn't the greatest as the 15 watt bulb was in the center. There is a patent online you can look at. Haven't found one for sale and got rid of mine about 15 years ago (had it from about 1971)
@ethanpoole3443
@ethanpoole3443 2 года назад
There is a rubber “shutter” piece behind the front grid that has X shaped slits for each hole position that are displaced when each pegs is inserted. But it does still come with some construction paper, if I recall, as well as a few suggested starter designs to get kids started. I suspect the rubber that acts as a makeshift shutter will lose its effectiveness over time if the pegs are left in place for too long a period, at which point one would have to resort to using the old tried and true construction paper…just like the original.

As I watched this video I could see my original one a few feet away. It uses the spring ternimal 6V batteries (PJ996 ?) type the "screen" is 12 inches by just over 9 inches. and comes with about twice as many coloured pegs (much deeper coloures). It also has a white plastic mesh under the black plastic front mesh. Switch is broken but can be bypassed. It was passed onto me from another families child who must have grown out of it. I've not grown out of it yet as i'm only 50!

We got one for Christmas in 1977 I think. It was fun. If I remember right, the panel was around 12" across and fit plain black 11x8 paper sheets. Ours had a stubby medium Base 40 or 25 watt CGE bulb. You could change it up or down depending how bright you wanted. YES the original pegs were very deep colours, and had long stems. I think we lost too many pegs in the orange shag carpet, and then up the vacuum cleaner which was a built in the wall style so the pegs ended up trapped in the pipes buried in the walls, & eventually we ran out of pegs.

I'm 57 and when I was a kid I had one (made for a very limited time) that did "animations". It consisted of a second screen behind the pegs that blocked half the holes and when u flipped a level at the bottom it move the second screen up and down alternating between two sets of holes that would be lighting up, this would let you make "moving" scenes like a two-page flipbook so to say. You were able to leave out the back-moving screen and use it normally too.

Had one of the original sets when I was small. It used a refrigerator-style incandescent lamp running off AC if I recall. I also recall if you used all of the project sheets it came with, you could buy blank sheets in sets of 20 or something, which extended the usefulness of it. This new version appears to not require the black paper at all, which greatly extends its versatility. When I saw the label on the box "bigger brighter screen" I assumed that the unit was the size of the box, then Fran pulls it out of the box and it's disappointingly smaller. These are definitely smaller than the 1970s version, so I wonder what the size is compared to. It's also noteworthy that they're calling the pegboard panel a "screen." I can't recall the terminology used on the original, but screens were far less ubiquitous in those days.

Been a lot of years but I remember having one in the 90's and wanting new "black sheets" my parents used construction paper which took 2 sheets overlapping (one and a little as I recall) to cover the whole thing. I don't know the exact size but I presume those were about 8x10 inch give/take. Maybe they assumed original size units were cm and then made it "bigger"?
@brianfriedl7464

I forgot how we had to use the black paper until you mentioned it. Without the sheet, it was just a grid of holes, and you could actually see the lightbulb through the "screen," right?
@VeganAtheistWeirdo
@VeganAtheistWeirdo 2 года назад
@@brianfriedl7464 That was definitely how mine was, vintage early-mid 70s. It looked like crap if you didn't use the paper. Oddly enough, I can't remember if we had to cut or join regular black construction paper once we ran out, but I do remember the old tablets of colored construction paper were actually slightly larger than loose-leaf notebook paper, so it was probably bigger than 8.5"x11". What Fran held in her hands here looked smaller than A4. I also remember that it got ridiculously hot if we played with it for too long in a stretch, to the point that we could feel the warmth radiating from it. I wonder how many fires those old incandescent appliance bulbs are responsible for igniting.
@thesledgehammerblog
@thesledgehammerblog 2 года назад
The easy way to do it was to cover the screen with aluminum foil. Probably not a great idea when it comes to the heat coming off the bulb though.

In the old days if you wanted a brighter lite brite, you took the bulb off dad's lamp in the den, and put it in the reflector base. I'm sure it was bigger than 25 watts. Probably a 60 or a 100. In that spirit, Fran bypasses the wimpy AA batteries with a 9-volt wall wart with a 5 volt regulator, stepped down to 4.7 volts. It isn't lite brite unless the plastic is in some danger of melting.

So I bought a second unit and used several of the LED boards to fill in the darker areas where there was obvious intent to have located LEDs before the product was cost optimized. You could run 100's with a big fan, and even the 200 3-ways by extending the front bezel with tape. Then, you got to learn how to shut stuff down fast at the smell of overheating plastic, and how to replace a burned up socket. Or so I hear... :)

Yeah I really liked the Light Bright. It was a dual gift to my brother and I and we got a set of extra patterns and pegs too. We never turned on the light until we had completely finished the picture. And always a surprise when a couple pegs were the wrong colour

The hacking potential of this thing. I'd turn it into a lightbox, maybe a flashlight with all those LEDs. I had one of these but it was a plug in version.

Back in the day we had a 15 watt incandesce bulb and an SPST switch. Today... a wall wart, voltage regulator, micro-controller, and leds. Progress I suppose.

I didn't realize the original light bright came out in the 60s. I was born in the 90s and got to play with one of them in the early 2000's.. Still fun back then :D Now just another example of a company that keeps reducing costs to please stockholders, while capitalizing on its former name 🤷🏼‍♂️

I loved seeing the old toy :-) Next up, hack in 4x LEDs for Lite Blinding Brite :-) Hey, a defining toy in my childhood was a Radio Shack 50-in-1 electronics set. I think they have them these days up to 150-in-1; it’d be fun to see you play with one of those and make some of the basic circuits with it :-)
@DanielLopez-kt1xt
@DanielLopez-kt1xt 2 года назад
A more expensive, but better way of making this toy would be to have contacts in every slot, and just normal LEDs to put in... having an AC 3v running at high frequency to light them all, no matter the orientation you put them in, and voila... every single LED lighting up would give more solid and even light output... if that's too complicated, just a difuser, and some 5V led strip in the back would do the trick, no strobing fancy lights, but could be easily dimmed...
@tactileslut
@tactileslut 2 года назад
Then wireless power to each peg. Then individually addressable brightness. And colors. Wait, we just reinvented the Jumbotron. Step back a few revs and a magic wand could light up the ones that fell into the carpet and air ducts.
@DanielLopez-kt1xt
@DanielLopez-kt1xt 2 года назад
@@tactileslut Well... wireless or addressable, but not both, at least not yet... however, with the wireless ones, you can find the missing ones in the carpet, nice idea!!!!

Awwww, what a cute little set. I've never ever heard of these. Not popular on this side of the pond, I think. Nice simple hack. The world overuses batteries; I really think that most battery-powered devices should have a barrel jack for adapter if you wish to use it. Non-lead solder is indeed crap. And you almost swore... almost! I would probably not stop. I knew the one about Ass-U-Me :)

I would use a USB micro connector, then you can safely assume that it will always get 5V DC and not 15V AC or worse You can write "only use the included adapter" as much as you want, but if it fits, it will be plugged in
@TheErador
@TheErador 2 года назад
Yep a USB connector is definitely the way to go here, especially for child use, you don't want kids at 110v (or more). A USB power bank in a little holster attached to it, would be primo - super portable - no cable flappin' about in the breeze and safe voltages.

A fiberglass-bristle "scratch brush" is extremely helpful for removing the "solder mask" coating on the circuit board traces. Scrape a little bit of it off with the Exacto blade or ( better) a dental pick, and then clean and polish it with the fiberglass brush (even small traces of that solder-mask will reject solder and you'll never get a good connection). An ink eraser containing pumice or silica will also work. I have a couple of small battery-powered artists' erasers that I modified to hold a fiberglass bristle brush and a silica-containing eraser rod, expressly for this type of polishing and cleaning before soldering (great for cleaning chassis ground points as well).

Yes I always check your power adapters before you use them. I pulled out of my collection a 24v that measured closer to 30v. I also pulled out a 6v one that measured 12v. As a kid I thought that every device should have a DC jack and headphone jack, as an adult every device absolutely should have both!

Power supplies often used to be unregulated. They would be somewhat correct when used at the specced current. Seems crazy now in the days of switched mode supplies and regulators costing pennies.

All things considered, seems like a solid version of the toy. Nothing too suspicious as far as electronics goes, and new vs old colors is going to be a choice that is heavily tinted by nostaliga or not. Though I do wish they would do packs of colors so you could get lighter pegs, medium pegs or darker pegs.

This thing is horrible, I'm surprised to see the real logo. Dim and uneven lighting due to being made to the absolute cheapest possible spec the consumer will barely tolerate.

At 10 min. You put a 3v supply for a 4.5v device. I agree they overshoot a little. For a 4.5v device I would use a minimum 3.8v supply, recommend 4v to keep leds cool.

If you measure the size by counting the number of peg holes, it appears the "new" version is less than half the size. I found a pic of what claimed to be an original, it had 19 rows x 45, and 20 rows x 44, compared to 13x30 and 12x31.

I am sort of surprised they didn't make the plastic loaded with pigment that glow when it with blue light and then use blue LEDs. That would make it brighter without adding to the cost.
