I made a massive 4x8ft Lite Brite!!! My sisters work was putting on a youth event and asked me to make this for the event since the theme was LIT. It was a lot of hard work and I wanted to quit a bunch of times. Now that it is all done it looks awesome and its totally fun to play with.

Haven't seen anything like that on the internet. Truly awesome. You have the patience of a saint to make so many holes! I bet drilling the last hole felt good. Definitely need to check out more of your videos!

I literally cried after I drilled the last hole! It felt so good to be finished with that part of the project. Thanks for watching.

Woah!! I dreamt of making a giant lite brite and after seeing the work that went into it, I'm glad you did it so I don't have to 🤣 It looks so awesome! I know acrylic rod is pretty pricey. I wonder how well 3D printer pegs would have worked...
@ChippedBuilds
@ChippedBuilds 3 года назад
Glad I could go through the pain for you. This project ended up being cool and fun after the fact but I have never regretted taking a commission so much! Acrylic rod is so expensive!!!! It was way cheaper to get clear rods and paint them rather then buying the colored rod.

That looks awesome! I remember playing with Lite-Brite as a kid. If you were to do it again (!!), instead of using a paper template to locate the center-punch locations, maybe make template with sharp pins to make the marks... like a 1' x 1' x 1/2" thick piece of wood with screws or nails protruding out the bottom. Would need some thru holes to let you locate it correctly.
@ChippedBuilds
@ChippedBuilds 5 лет назад
Thanks! That would have been a good idea to do that rather than use my paper template lol. As of right now I am not planning on making another one.

Using a wood stop block clamped to the saw fence is faster and more accurate for cutting identical lengths. When marking out that many holes, a wood or sheet metal guide makes it go way faster. Countersink the holes, you can drill them from the guide using a pin or 2 to keep it aligned and you can go really fast. Using some crappy/scrap wood sheet beneath what youre drilling will prevent that tearout on the backside. You can offset the holes on the scrap to use a peice 1/4 as big. Sometimes even tape or paint helps. Hearing your moan about not having a cnc when your woodworking equip is 5x mine was a lil annoying tbh. Suprised your sheet didn't break more really. nice job keeping it together! Using long strips to hold it works better. Lexan is way more forgiving, but more costly and floppy. Dip-dying the pegs might work better and be easier on yourself and your envorons than spray cans. Might also pass more light. Anyway, these are just tips. you did the hard thing and actually made it. Nice job!

This was actually on my project list. It does look like a lot of work but it came out great. Did you think about maybe making a bunch of wood plugs painted black so that every hole would not need a light rod?
@ChippedBuilds
@ChippedBuilds 5 лет назад
BronkBuilt thanks. yeah that might happen in the future but for this specific event they all had to be lit.

This looks expensive, does anyone know how much this project took money wise to complete ? I just looked up the rods and they r pricy !!
@ChippedBuilds
@ChippedBuilds 2 года назад
It was expensive to make. It cost a little over $1000. At the time I bought all the rods for around $800. And I bough clear ones and painted them since colored acrylic rods are crazy expensive!
