The Hole : Crayfish; also known as crawfish, crawdads, crawlfish, crawldads, freshwater lobsters, mountain lobsters, mudbugs or yabbies! Enjoy the adventure everyone, have a great weekend and next week the two part Road Trip adventures begins! - Luke
Yeah, we have those terrestrial crawfish, and their funny little mounds all over the yard. I guess it's because the ground water is only a few feet below the surface in some spots. The little guys won't be there much longer though, I'm afraid. A lithium company (Piedmont Lithium) is getting ready to strip mine about 1800' from my property. They're sure to disrupt, if not outright ruin the ground water.
@@thealabamabushcrafter6861 well it is kind of hard to do a review without talking and I rather like it when youtubers interact with their viewers hence the "pathfinder alcohol stove review " now it would have been hard for you to review that stove without talking would it not and saying UM to many times well that can be a form of rambling but non the less i also enjoyed your video. I love the way Luke handles himself on camera and I appreciate all you tube people so please don't take me the wrong way just a guy on the sidelines that loves bushcraft , backpacking , paddling , hunting and fishing.
Congratulations to your daughter and to you & your Mrs. for raising one of America's finest. Enjoy your videos and I'm looking forward to your next adventure.
Your overnight videos are by far my favorite! Another great video! I know what you mean about the creek bringing you back to your childhood. I grew up fishing and hiking the banks of a river behind my childhood home. Always brings back good memories 😀
Luke, I really like this area. It's beautiful to go with you on this walk. My legs just won't let me do it anymore. I loved the woods when I was a kid. I use to walk alot. So, I feel like I can live my life, watching you and your wonderful family on your fun adventures. Thank you so much. I'm starting to talk about you and Susie all the time. My friends and family know who I'm talking about. Thanks , I love you guys. Your so much fun to be with.🙄😊💖
Following you guys, bushcrafters, backpackers, etc, you get sorta attached. It's sad to see the episodes end each time. I guess because I live alone and live my "sad" life vicariously through you guys. lol. Love your videos.
My Uncles favorite way to get us out of the house, was to take us to the creek behind Grandma and Grandpa's trailer to build a dam. As a kid being allowed to play in the creek and get wet in the summer was like heaven. We could play at the creek and throw rocks if we wanted to. But to be sent to the creek, so the grown-ups could talk in peace... that was special. I've never lived more than a mile away from a creek or a river. We always called them crawdads, didn't care how it was spelled... keep doing what your doing
Hi Luke, I am homebound. I haven't been outside in a while. Things aren't looking good either. I need your videos. Some say when you die and go to heaven you get a mansion. Me, I would rather have a tent on a lake with a wood burning stove. That's my heaven. You take care of yourself and keep up the excellent work.
William Nelson i do hope you get well and you can go outside. If not, i hope you can get that sweet spot at the lake and keep the fire going...I wish you all strenght buddy
Jesus is mighty to forgive our sins whether we live or die we have the ultimate experience of feeling His Love in us and around us and when we acknowledge that it penetrates us. Jesus knows exactly where you are. God Bless""RIDE ON""
Hey William, I am in a similar situation, unable to get out in the woods. Luke's videos are an excellent substitute. You may also be interested (if you haven't seen it yet) in a great channel by Wiltshire Man. Take it easy mate.
I love your videos. I’m subscribed to a bunch of bushcraftets but I watch you more than any of them. I don’t get to get out and walk but I watch you walking and I get to see alot of scenery. I know your legs and feet get tired and probably your back also from carrying a heavy load. May God be with you on your adventures and may he watch over you and protect you from harm. Amen! Stay safe.
Lol 14:00 Luke: "Hmm that could have been Bear, I don't know, sadly I stepped on it" Luke is the only person I know that can kill a bear by stepping on it. Total Badass
So very proud of Madison. I have a few stories that I could tell about Basic Training. I wish her the very best in her Technical training and her future in the Navy. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
Check this out, I am the night time, 2000 to 0800, dispatcher for a ambulance company. pretty much nothing happens for days. So I am now watching your videos. (all of them) starting about a month ago. So theoretically I get paid to watch your show!!! Semperfi and happy Marine Corps Birthday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So i started watching your channel and my 5 year old sometimes watches it with me. She now loves to watch your channel and keeps asking me to go camping haha! I dont uave the gear for winter camping in canada. So she has to wait for the summer. But she probably wont let me forget until we do it!
Crawdad hole, my friend. Luke, I live in Texas because of my work. I so long to be back into my Appalachian Mountains. My daughter still lives in my little house back in the foothills of the Smokies. Your walk makes me so homesick. I have been all over the globe, with the Army. There is no place on this earth more beautiful than those sweet mountains. One time, when I was in my 20s, I hiked up and down Mount LaCont to see the sunrise, before Sunday School. It took 4 hours. It was worth it. God bless you and yours. Texas
Awesome man! Your daughter will turn into a hard, compassionate lady! It’s great to see you and Susie support her the way you do! I’ll be heading out on my canoe today. Supposed to get down to 20f tonight. We’ll see how this Wiggy’s sleeping bag handles my cold sleeping butt! No snakes today!
Great choice on the location, gorgeous piece of woods! Bummer about no fires! For me the campfire is one of my favorite parts of the trip. Still, getting out is better than not getting out at all! I miss the woods!
Luke, I am an old Army retiree. I have three daughters. On the middle one’s 21’st birthday I was in Baghdad. We got called to surgery for 21 yo female soldier. Her mandible had been ripped off her face, gone. Her top teeth were broken away from and hanging from her skull. When I barely pushed on the left side of her forehead the right side of her head moved too...in a crushed sick way. I know that you are so excited for your daughter to be military; but, remember, she didn’t join to be a safe civilian. I care for you and your family more than I can say. Love her, love her, love her... Texas
Remember to pray for her, Luke, and never stop. No matter what, God knows where she is and is always near. God bless and keep her in His loving care, always.
I was enjoying the video until I read this. I am no stanger that this world ends and can end horribly but have not nor can ever understand the nature of death as you have seen it. It may be a cliche but if but thanks for your service. Service, ha. Thanks for enduring horrors and tragedies that most shall never understand!
Dang, that looks like late August or early September where I live... EDIT: in the early part of the video, I should say! Beautiful country you have there, Luke.
@@TheOutdoorGearReview I'm here in Michigan myself just south of Grand rapids ..today was out first snow ....2" on grass ..roads just wet ...lake affect west of 131 ..for tonight lol ...
Wow Luke, Toby here.. I feel like I've watched your kids grow up.. Its amazing how fast time flys😮....I can remember when I hit the subscribe button so long ago (at the time you only had about 800 subs) I look forward to so many more ONA's 💪👍✌ thanks bro. Toby
You're probably familiar with the Japanese concept of Shinrin-Roku, literally, "Forest Bathing" which is been found to be very therapeutic for anxiety, depression and many other ailments. Two of the most therapeutic elements in Shinrin-Roku are Wind in the trees,. and the sound of Running Water, a babbling creek. That may be why it is so relaxing to watch and listen to this this video!
I noticed a black birch on this video. The bark and roots can be boiled down to make a birch beer (wintergreen flavor). Yellow birch has the same flavor but not as much. In the spring the sap can be collected and boiled down to a syrup like maple syrup is. In some open areas you can find a wintergreen red berry along the ground (don't confuse it with Partridge berry). Combined with spruce gum, you can make a chewing gum to relieve thirst. The leaves can make a wintergreen tea.
Another awesome adventure Luke. So proud of Maddie, god bless her and those brave enough serve and protect the rest of us. That unf### yourself line is also used in full metal jacket... one of the lines from the DI in the beginning of the film. God bless our veterans!!
Enjoyed the video Luke (as usual). Looking forward to the next one. We received 2 inches of snow today in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Greetings from your northern fan.
Good stuff, I envy your good weather...two weeks ago I tried to do a two night canoe trip but had to come home early because of ice on the lakes. Yesterday I went deer hunting the day time high -9 C and snowing ( Alberta, Canada) Keep up the great work John
Even though the season's going to change, the green color all around is so lovely. You made me laugh when you said "but what you do need is a Taster's Nasty" HAHAHAHAHAHA What a beautiful campsite with the creek there too, nice. Oh my about your daughter's mistake and her superior's response. And 45 min with mouth open -I'm sure they never made that mistake again. Your daughter's made such a great decision in her life and I hope her career shines brightly for her.
thanx for your statement about back roads vs. interstate. as a trucker, I wish that more people would use them, especially in cities. most times, trucks MUST use the big road. 4 wheelers can go any where.
Thanks for another awesome video. I was wondering what you use for a quilt I’m a stomach sleeper And a big guy so I was thinking of switching to a quilt.
Were we supposed to answer what that crawfish chimney was? They use those to hunker down in and they're all over here where we live in Southwest Louisiana. Anywhere that's low and damp, they build them. I saw a pasture the other day that was filled with crawfish chimneys and was amazed because I've never seen them so thick like that. When my husband mows over a chimney, the poor little crawfish starts to put it back up ASAP. Where does the name yabbie come from? One day, when the kids were still little, I came home and found a huge crawfish that had gone through the gate to the dog yard and all my yorkies were going nuts. That brave little crawfish was going after them, brandishing its big claws at them, trying to scare them. Yorkies don't have the sense to be scared of anything (gets a lot of them killed!), so they were barking their heads off and pushing in the pen gate in toward the little critter, but it was so funny to see. I have a couple of photos of that somewhere. Anyway, it did NOT like it that I picked it up and saved its life. Ferocious little things that they are. May 2024--I saw one of your videos that you were going to go camping in a hurricane? That's not smart. God be with you.
Got back today from a car tent camping with my 2 sons’ Boy Scout Troop In SE Michigan. Yesterday’s wake up temp was 22’ with a wind chill of 10’. This morning wake up temp was 27’, no wind. Good Times
If a stream isn't too deep, you can cross by piling up stones into a ford. Another option is to carry a couple plastic sleeves like long bread wrappers or paper delivery covers and slip your legs into them and then tie them over the tops of your boots like gaiters. Boots need to be goretex or at least reasonably waterproof. You still need to cross quickly.
I too think you may have heard a bigfoot. The next morning I would have investigsted the area where I heard the noise and looked for footprints. Beautiful country we live in. Thanks for showing us a little piece of it.
I live the Deep South (Alabama gulf coast) and I’ve never heard anyone pronounce bear- bar. Other than that I love your videos, especially the multi night in winter weather.
This was a laugh a minute Luke very enjoyable adventure the stories about your daughter were very funny. The things that go bump in the night are always a mystery but you handled it well, like you have a choice Ha-ha sorry you could not have a campfire in such a great stop.
Great Lakes you say? My father was a SeaBee instructor there on base in the sixties. We spent one school year there, when he had custody for that time.
Awesome adventure like always. I’d love to see you do an adventure where you choose your absolute favorite gear. Nothing but the best. Think of a scenario where you had to get rid of almost all your gear and could only keep one pack, tent, sleeping bag... ect.
It being a well maintained trail and trail markers being seen on trees it is obviously a public trail. I get keeping your bushwhacked camp site a secret but let us NC folks know of a place we might not have been to so we can enjoy it.
Hey Luke! Love your channel. I've been subscribed for years. Anyways, I am curious about about the backpack you are using in this video. What is and have you done a video on it? Where do I find one and is it hydration bladder compatible?
Beautiful country! Reminds me of the area I like to hike on state land near the river. Only thing that makes it not so great are the ticks and Mosquitoes. Talking about the Halloween movie, it was a fantastic sequel. They did a great job and the movie had a great story. I also seen the newer Halloween Kills and it was really good. They brought back a few original actors and characters from the original movie. The next one, Halloween Ends is still a mystery yet, but I'm super excited about it. I'm gonna dress up as Michael Myers with the Halloween Kills mask and go to the theater and watch it. I was Michael Myers this last Halloween and I had so much fun scaring people and all the adults loved it.
Oops! Didn't see the answer below, have lot of those around the creek at home. Ever tried to pull one out with a wild onion? It works but, sometimes it takes a while. Thanks for sharing another Awesome video. I loved the area you were in... ATB to You and Yours..Von
