Blackmore was great here but for me the magic of this track is that it explores all band members abilities - this could not be done without Paice and Lord and nobody could create that atmosphere like Gillan. It’s the most complete DP track and the best showcase of individual and collective talent.
I was born 1962, know this song since 1973/74 from the live album "Made in Japan"...hear it again and again, still today. But watching Ritchie is another world. This unbelievable guitar solo starting about 04:40....... can't hardly follow his fingers with my eyes. That's music, that's art, that's the implementation of emotion, skill and heart. I regret the generation of youth of today who don't get to know real music anymore
I don’t think you could describe Ian Paice as underrated - Highly Rated I’d say .... he’s probably in the top five of most well known, recognisable, rock drummers
András Volentics you must be joking or you are a complete idiot with no education no knowledge and no culture. Just because you like someone doesn’t mean they’re gonna be remembered in a thousand years. I like my dog
@@jean-marieboucherit4716 don't care either , but why the insults just because you disagree,,,everyone is wrong cause your rite? maybe an intelligent rebuttal is beyond your intelligence , education and in this case especially your culture, you are very full of yourself and any point of sounding smart is lost , and I hate your dog
@@eucaliptuspin7208 The question from a Led Zeppelin fan seems a bit provocative, but I'll answer. Blackmore is recognisable by the way he plays and not only by his right hand flying out, but also by his thumb work on the top string.
Who's down voted this? Can never understand some people's mentallity! Great track! Great playing! Great version! 1,000,000,000 times better than the crap you get today!!
A guitar solo, back in 1969, that came from a place no-one dared to go. Not Hendrix, not Alvin lee, Not Jimmy Page. Only Blackmore went there and he brought back magic, didn't he. Gillan's voice was alreadsy shot here; he couldn't sing the high notes any longer. I've seen him doing it before. I've watched and heard him. It was magical, back in the day. I cried over it and still do at times.
Fantastic feeling of a truth brother!!!..Magic is real, choose your sorcery carefully, Deep Purple IS the mystic entanglement of our spiritual here now ness.☯️
An excellent version of this absolute masterpiece. Yes, for sure, Richie Blackmore remains one of the best guitarists of all time. It's not only a question of technical skills. Richie has the intelligence in terms of the choice of notes that sound good. He never learns by heart his solos and every time he plays them differently. A genius !
Это надо иметь талант , так пить ,как Гиллан и при этом так петь!!!!!Быть неуживаемым человеком ,как Блекмор и играть ,как он!!! Гении.., которые уходят потихоньку , как Лорд.
Blackmore is a freak. He is definitely one guitar player that plays the whole neck, not just the high notes. It tears me up that old age got to him. Thank God he left so much music for us to listen to.
The best line up of Deep Purple .... they were unbeatable at the time in the Rock world....each individual a master in his field....absolutely magnificent!!!!!!
Deep purple will always have a special place in my heart. Not only for some of the most amazing music I've ever heard but the memories I have of my Dad who sadly passed in January. My first concert was seeing Deep Purple at the royal Albert hall with Ronnie James Dio and the London symphony orchestra at the age of 15 and I was obsessed after seeing you live. Dad & I went to pretty much Every UK show after. He loved your music so much and you were his favorite band, he often referred to Jon Lord as "God with sunglasses". My Dad was a true Deep Purple fan and was even wearing one of your T-Shirts when he took his final breath. Thank you so much for the music. Much love!
Absolutely amazing how Ian Gillan has maintained (even improved) his vocal skills over the years. Doing this song live is a miracle. Ritchie, Jon and Ian are equally from another universe... divine!
Deep Purple live is pure excitement! I have seen and heard Blackmore live many times, but he never sounded better than this. The rhythm section as always drives this machine and are incredible. Only Ian Gillan sounds off on this. The years of screaming caught up to him.
I somehow think Ian Gillan is great here. Sure he has sounded better but there is something with him not exactly hitting those high notes and resorting to power and brute force that makes it insanely emotional, he is pouring his soul out into the microphone.
@@otnoirhc I read an article about Purple, where Gillan didn't want to sing this song at some shows because his voice wasn't up to it. Blackmore, who didn't care for Gillan at this time, would purposely play it just to make Ian look bad.
@2003Cpayne dude i almost see you in comment sections of almost every king crimson and deep purple mk1 songs. i dont know who you are but you have really good taste of music pls dont change that larks tongues in aspic profile photo, that's how i remember you every time
Fuck yes! I kind of overlooked him for most of my life.Watching him play this solo was astonishing . I was born in 1976 so Deep Purple were not really part of the "generation" of music i grew up on. However , after i stole this compilation cassette called Masters of Metal or something like that and it had bands ranging from Deep Purple to Metal Church, i was completely blown away by the song Perfect Strangers which was featured on the cassette . I was around 14 then i believe . So when my mother and i were in a used record store shortly after heaing the song , and i saw the Vinyl version of th Perfect Strangers LP i talked her into buying it for me. Perfect strangers is a PERFECT song .It is super memorable , filled with emotion and the bad is so tight . But it did not feature any over th top guitar playing like this song here did.Oh and of course when i started playing guitar Smoke on the water along with Iron Man were the firsrt riffs i learned lol. But isnt that th case for all rock/metal guitarists ?
Absolutely stunning. It's amazing to watch there four come together and play that good. Deep Purple is one of the most talented rock band to ever come together.
@@Hallalo Black Sabbath was not Hard Rock in any way shape or form. Strictly Heavy Metal. Purple was strictly Hard Rock, Blackers told me so himself about DP.
The moment I hear Blackmore I know it is Richie. There is so much natural musicality, passion, fire, devotion, refinement and sensitivity in his fluent and soulful playing. A great artist who absorbs me completely when he plays the inside out in a flow and yet in control, a universe on its own.
Thanks Ian Gillan! You sacrificed your voice to offer us such great moments, without thinking of yourself! Ritchie could change his guitar chords, but you your vocal chords not! I still listen to it and can‘t find something replace your performances!
actually was kind of dumb how he fucked up his voice, when he was with sabbath his doctor told him to go to surgery before touring, and he went anyway on tour for almost two years...
Deep Purple in Rock is my first unheard album. It was 1971, and I still listen to this band with pleasure to this day. Deep Purple for ages in our hearts!!!
Listen! I don't care that Ian lost his voice, lost this spectacular high notes. He is still amazing! He is heart of this band, and Ritchie was DP soul. I like Coverdale era, like Glenn Hughes vocal (and only he kept his voice range) but i think and i feel, that only this Mark2 line up was true and unique. And it means so much to me.
Year 1969, Said here IAN, I’m 19 years when I’m listen first time « Child in time » always 2020, 67 years, with Pleasure 🥰listen the beautiful song💕🙌yes, Ian, great👍🎶
Brixton Academy first night on this tour Ian and Ritchies bad vibe was seen and felt, even before the Birmingham water incident..they did not work together at all.Ian to his credit was trying to connect with RB with ref to this song Strange Kind of Woman where theybounce shit around..but na, Richie wasnt having it..Gillan wasnt there as far as he was concerned..but fucking great gig in spite of that,,my one time watch of Mk11..Ians voice post surgery was the best Id heard it since IGB some15 years earlier..
There is no other band ever like this classic DP lineup. Saw them in 73 still on the machine head tour when Ian Gillan was at his best. They Improvise into every song and never do it the same way twice. One of the best bands ever.
On the contrary... I feel Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were more influential as bands. Sabbath started the Metal genre and Zeppelin had good and versatile song writing abilities. But Among the three, Deep Purple undoubtedly had the best stage presence and put on some of the best shows. I think Purple was a band that was very particular about paying attention to detail especially Lord and Blackmore. This gave Purple the advantage over the other two in terns of throwing the best live shows.
In terms of keyboard and guitar, they were truly influential. Both Lord ans Blackmore changed the perception of the instrument, but as a band itself, Led Zep and Black Sabbath are way more influential. Led Zep is the definition of hard rock, and Black Sabbath gave birth to metal. Bonham was also absolutely influential, the most influential drummer in rock history I must say. John Paul Jones was a great musician in every way, Plant's vocal were something never seen before and Page's riffs were absolutely great. For me, Led Zep is probably the most influential band behind the Beatles, each one of its members were the best on their instruments (something you don't see everyday) and they defined the 70's rock music.
Yes, Black Sabbath are to BLAME for metal. Ozzy Osbourne is a terrible singer who doesn't even write his own lyrics - and he's committed vile crimes against animals. Iommi and Butler are good, but being associated with that singer negates their relevance. The Big 3 to me is Purple, Zeppelin and Mott the Hoople, who were just as heavy but not metal. The press has bigged up Black Sabbath, but in fact they were regarded as a joke pre-stoner culture, with vacant people using the word "like" in every sentence. Purple apparently sold twice as many records as The Sabs, and Zeppelin sold twice as many as Purple, so that tells you something about influence. Uriah Heep were also pretty successful, and Budgie. And there's the small matter of Rainbow, Whitesnake and Gillan...
@@AlexAlexon3897 Black Sabbath was great too, you're just very pretentious. I love Zeppelin and Purple every bit as much, and they are all great bands. Ozzy was a great vocalist within the 70s and 80s. His voice did age, but so did Plant's and Gillian's. Ozzy isn't quite as good a vocalist or lyricist as Gillian and Plant sure, but still did great things with the voice that he had. You can't hear songs like Mama I'm Coming Home or Goodbye to Romance and not feel moved by Ozzy's vocals. He is brilliant in Snowblind, Changes, Planet Caravan, War Pigs, and a whole lot of other great tracks. And Geezer Butler is probably the best bass player of the three bands, and a great lyricist as well. Not to mention Tony's riffs and even his acoustic playing and overall songwriting capabilities, are top notch. He can write metal, but also pleasing acoustic segments as well. Of course Page and Blackmore are both capable of this as well, Tony is capable. Fluff is a perfect example, Children of The Sea, Spiral Architect, Heaven and Hell. There is plenty of good within their music, especially with Ozzy and the great Ronnie James Dio as the vocalists. Great music and album sales have nothing in common, because there are thousands of brilliant musicians who aren't selling that many albums, especially these days. You could argue over their influence, but bro, every one knows Iron Man, every one knows War Pigs, and there are thousands of great bands to come from Sabbath and the sound that they created. Their music was great and it helped deepen the sound that rock and roll stared. And lets not pretend that Zeppelin and Purple were perfect bands either. They did a lot of crazy shit too. You think that Jimmy Page or Robert Plant are entirely innocent? Or Ritchie Blackmore? Hell, even John Lennon was a piece of shit at times. And even some of their albums, while brilliant, can have some boring songs. No band is perfect, no matter how brilliant they are. But they all made great and highly influential music that certainly paved the way for thousands upon thousands of musicians all around the world for over 50 years. Whether you like the band's music or not, their influence is there, and it speaks for itself really. And the music is good, that's what should matter overall. Sabbath earned their legacy, no one cares if you don't like them, because they are still with Purple and Zeppelin as the Big 3. Even the 3 riffs every one learns to play on guitar are Iron Man, Whole Lotta Love and Smoke on the Water. That speaks for itself about who is the Big 3.
Debatable because I love all 3 bands with a slight bias towards Gillan on vocals (also because of his solo work esp JCS), Iommi on the guitar, Butler on the bass, Paice on the drums. Lord has no equal except in Manzarek and Emerson. So, of the 3, overall DP for me.
Good observation. But if you analyze deeper, you'll see how Glover and Paice precisely keep up the rhythm section. Ritchie is able to improvise his solo only because of the rhythm section being so accurate. Jon Lord then attacks the guitar solo with his overdriven Rock organs to enhance the instrumental solo. You can listen to the middle section where all three of them go crazy... this is thanks to Jon Lord gradually increasing the pitch and overdrive. What an amazing team work !!!
The instrumental part also shows Roger Glover's fantastic bass playing !! Blackmore's solo would never have been that good had it not been for Glover's ability to provide such a solid foundation with his bass playing.
@@sandeepsreehari9188 yeah right... too bad you can barely hear it.. he is an average player by his own admission stating that having Blackmore Paice and Lord in the band was enough so he could get away with playing simple stuff on bass
