It's funny that you mentioned hot sauce being a fishing brand. I remember a while back lets talk hookup was talking about it and my buddies and I went to taco bell and took a bunch of hot sauce to put on our baits hahahaha.

Thanks for the support. I launch at Shelter Island launch ramp and Gloritta Bay park. Those are the two main access points. There’s also Chula Vista launch ramp and J Street.

I Caught my PB Cabezon on a Warbait under-spin paired with a custom 6”square tail swim bait. Lost the bait to a snag a week later. I was gutted.

Quick question, what would you recommend for a all around saltwater baitcast reel? Also what rod would you pair it with?

I guess it depends on how much you have to spend, plus are you thinking bay only or also inshore? For the bay, a 200 sized reel. Revo X with a 7’-7’5” MH rod. Similar to a fresh water set up. Inshore you’ll need more line capacity. So a 300 sized reel or larger. Abu Beast 40HS with a 7’9”-8’ H rod. Most of my calico style rods are Phenix. Shop around, get something that feels good. Good luck!

Is it common that Calico's are caught in deeper water w/o kelp?

Yes. They were gathered around a system of rocks in 70ft of water. This is more a Sand Bass spot, so it was strange to catch so many calico

I went with the 3oz on this day because the wind was blowing and the current was moving fast. I’d usually fish a 1-5-2oz in 65ft of water. I might do a kayak trip through Fast Lane next year

All of my bottom spots come from staring at the fish finder and dropping a jig down on anything that looks interesting. I catch a lot of random fish this way
