Footage of an early iteration of the metal cap stage. Judging by the star counter, this was recorded shortly after the snow level session. The Fun of Nintendo is Eternal.
Man if I would've needed to complete this stage to get the metal cap I would've stayed at 70 stars lmao Really lovely romhacking in this one, it's beautiful
Differences from the final game: 1. Different sound effects (lower pitched "Yippee" sound effect for long jump) 2. This build seems to be from E3 1996. This is true because of the icons, however the placement of the coin and star icons on the HUD are swapped. Indicating that this may be a bit older than the E3 1996 build. Camera icons are also not present. The title screen also appears a lot less smoothly and pops out less with a Mario voice clip that seems to stitch together an older much more higher pitch Mario voice and the final version's clip. 3. The Metal Cap stage itself is larger and much more different than the final game. It seems to be more bluish and has lava in it, indicating that the functionality of Metal Mario bouncing on lava with no damage may have been intended to be used in normal play. In the final game, no fire level has a Metal Cap in it. The platforming is also more difficult and the music choice is Lethal Lava Land's theme instead of Hazy Maze Cave 4. Different bob-omb explosion. Bob-ombs also seem to behave similarly to Bullies when entering lava. 5. The Metal Cap level also has way more crystals than the final game. 6. In the final game, there is no crackling sound effect that is heard in the hallway. The carpet in the hallway after the Metal Cap stage is also nowhere to be found (or atleast that specific design) in the final game. 7. This build seems to have some remnants of the personalization that is seen in older builds of Mario 64 (Do not research.) 8. Castle foregrounds have fog and Mario spawns much higher, causing him to lose half his health. This may have been an intended feature (?) 9. The bridge to the Castle entrance is removed for some reason. A weird choice as earlier builds clearly had that bridge. This indicates that the moat is drained from the start because now, Mario enters the castle from the basement. 10. No water in the sort of pit that is present where the cannon to the castle roof is. Leaving it barren. The brick texture also seems to be of a lighter color. 11. "Inside Castle" music seems to use slightly different instruments and sounds calmer than the final version. 12. The basement is much smaller and more compact. With the moat door leading to a single staircase to a double door accompanied with Peach's painting on the upper side of the room. 13. The sound effects that play when reading a sign are a lot more ;ower pitched. The short Bowser music that plays when a door cannot be opened is also not present. 14. "The door won't budge!" seems to be a placeholder text, applying to all locked doors in the room. 15. The doors that can't be opened have a different texture with a cross on them. 16. The clock texture that was first used in the 1995 Patent Build in lieu of Princess Peach's image is reused on top of the key door in this area. Interestingly, neither this clock nor the Princess Peach design is used and instead the area above the Castle Entrance is completely just the normal castle textures 17. The only unlocked door that leads to "May the hunt begin" may indicate that this build was for competition among playtesters or something to do with the miniscule remnants of the sinister personalization. 18. Interesting, there are 4 doors here. The final game's basement has 4 levels: Shifting Sand Land, Hazy Maze Cave, Lethal Lava Land and Dire Dire Docks. This may mean that BitFS was initially the first Bowser stage. 19. Different Goomba texture. More detailed. Nintendo's fun is eternal. Super Mario 64 was personalized.
@@ooshtoosht1695 I do recall in Beta64's video that OOT shared the same metal texture. So possibly. But if Mario 64 was the first game for the N64, wouldn't that mean that the crackling was a repurposed asset in OOT then?
@@adrianthesnowkoopatroopa4810 ummm... this video is supposed to take place in 1996, the time when mario's voiceclips was almost finalized. you can hear a few differences in a few of his voiceclips in this video and in few seconds of footage you get from the real thing.
It doesn't have the Early Elevator Texture at the beginning. Remember the lights you see in the Level? Well... The Early Elevator has the light texture.
@@smallnoob1180 I think Greenio does it particularly well however. Few people go for phycological horror with this stuff. Most just make "sPoOky wARiO heAd caMe oUT oF diRE dIRe doCkS aAaaaAAAAaaAa!!1!1!"
Man this part of the castle you created at 5:49 made me remembered a specific memory where I first looked at the Slide room from the original game (because I originally played the game on DS). It was so weird because I really wanted to go in this room, it's kinda hard to describe but I just loved when everything was short on this game
I genuinely hope you know how cool these videos you make are. I’m a horror fanatic and this concept is so cool I wish there were more horror games that focused on 90/early 2000s media because it is SCARY AF.
To be fair, this would be a pretty good mechanic. It'd be like a "Symphony Of The Night" Type way of unlocking The Metal Cap. It'd really help for Areas you can't reach or stand on without a certain cap. But that's just my opinion though. (Also, I just noticed that the entire game is based around caps, even though I've beaten Mario 64 DS 10+ Years Ago, Man.)
I know I'm 3 years late but I still wanna say that it is PRETTY dang creepy when you have a dream when you're young and years later in the future you watch a video or play a game or go somewhere that looks so similar to that dream you had back then. Weird... The same happened to me with Kingdom Hearts 3
3:50 huh, this is like a SM64 dream I had. No music playing inside a dark hallway. Such an interesting vibe... You really should make a game like this :)
I guess the personalization didn’t fully disappear after the core was destroyed. The remnants of it scattered through builds, lurking in the shadows, waiting for someone to find them, so they can grow stronger than before. The cycle wasn’t finished. As a matter of fact... It only just began. May the hunt begin.
The Auto Generated Captions are sentient. 0:16 The captions are confused. 3:02 The captions learned something new. 3:44 The captions are curious. 4:12 The captions are confused again. 5:08 The captions is shocked at the sight. 5:22 The captions remembered they can long jump. 5:50 The captions is saying run. "oooooh vedy scary" 6:04 The captions are amazed by all the doors. 6:18 The captions are thinking what to do. 6:58 "May the Hunt Begin." Captions: "You."
6:10 4 Doors, 4 Challenges Will you cower in fear and let the darkness consume you? Or will you face it and uncover the castle's true form? choose wisely.
These are so underrated and incredible, not the most original concept, I feel like your talents could be used on something fresher, yet to each their own I suppose, great work.
This metal cap stage is ingenious! It'd explain why the Metal Stage in Super Smash Bros 64 has no relation to a Mario Stage, and the lava there would explain the why there's unused lava damage immunity in the final game!
I just realized that you could also exploit the metal abilities invincibility by having Mario bounce of the lava waterfall like he does in a few ROM hacks.
ok so when i was a kid, the “behind the waterfall” part of hazy maze cave was my favorite, but not because it was fun, it was because i had lots of nightmares about it. this video feels like closure lol
I don’t know what it is but something about the combination of the music and the colors make me feel like falling in the blue lava will cost you dearly. The atmosphere in this is pulled off flawlessly.
"You're back." "Have you not learned your lesson?" If anything, the first batch of tapes just made me want to go deeper down this rabbit hole. You're pretty much doing the exact opposite of what you want me to do.
Not to distract from freaky ass Lanky AF Mario reject. But DAMMMNNNN That Metal Cap level looked SICK AS FUCK. I would've loved to played that. Aside from the demon mario cave.
As The Fog In The Distance Shortened Mario’s Vision, He Went Inside The Castle To Warm HimSelf, As It Was Cold, But... He Wasn’t Prepared For What Was To Come.
