All ages of outdoorsmen and women in the Pacific Northwest big game hunt every year. Howard Harrod and Ron Pratt have been hunting partners for over 40 years. In this episode, Howard hunts for a buck in the Bear Valley near John Day, OR and later he teams up with Ron for a elk hunt on the family ranch near North Powder, OR. This was Episode 6 of The Northwest Outdoorsmen in 2015.

Way to go, men! Fine shootin'! I'm just maybe a decade younger than you and want to be up and hustlin' and shootin' like you at your age. Some folks think it's a cinch to take a spike during second season in northeastern Oregon but let me assure you it is not. In some units, success is only about 18%. My 4 buddies and I worked our tails off this year (2019) in a northeastern unit and only came out at 20% and it was not till the last day of 8 days of hard hunting! Then it was a monstrous hike down into and out of the canyon in the dark to retrieve the meat. These creatures that God made have a lot of amazing survival instincts. You are real hunters. @@HarrodOutdoors Thank you. In 2020, we did not draw the branch bull tags so went after spike again. Oh, my, a very big challenge. A blizzard came and it is the first time in my life (about 23 years hunting, started in my 40s) that I got snowed out. We had to get out of dodge or maybe spend 2 weeks or 2 months where we were. Had to leave before any of the 6 of us got a spike. In hindsight, we should have taken the extra half day and re-set camp 10 miles away and hunted another 2-1/2 days. Well, adrenaline was rushing and we left. Next time, backup plan! Going again this year if don't get the bull tags. Godspeed.

North Powder! My old elk hunting grounds.. Used to hunt the Elkhorn wildlife area west of there and towards Baker City, back in the 90's!

Yes, it is! And great hunting! I hunted mulies over in the Imnaha unit, just above Imnaha out on Grizzly Ridge! Filled my tag every year that I was lucky enough to get a draw. Some big bucks running around those draws overlooking the Snake River Canyon. Rough hunting though and long range shots are the norm there. My Ruger M77 Mark ll in 7mm Remington Mag came in quite handy. :-)
