The internet is still largely centralized, and not every country has strong institutional controls preserving the right to access information or speak freely. Heck, even many "liberal democracies" are backsliding. While this may sound like an infosec talk suited for the think tank crowd, these developments are impacting hackers and the results they present at hacker cons.
Internet freedom tools are about empowering users to have the safety to make their own priorities. While China, Iran, and Russia are obviously key concerns in this space, many other countries are seeking to enact new laws and regulations that impact all types of users -- some with nefarious intent and others just accidentally harmful.
This conversation will explore the reasons, the symptoms, and some ideas about how to preserve our ability to set our own priorities. We will offer a holistic and detailed picture of how censorship affects our work and that of our colleagues -- how even if you feel secure in the freedom you have where you are right now, government censorship and surveillance in other places will unquestionably affect us all.

loving how "western government" and "oppressive regime" are being used as antonyms here. How is there still anyone this naiive about our government?

You'd be surprised! There are people out there who still think that capitalism is the one true and just system with *ZERO* systemic problems (or at least that the pros *always* outweigh the cons)

It's only relatively speaking. As bad as internet censorship is becoming in America, the problem is we are following the path of other countries like the EU and China who are far more controlling which is why VPNs are a lot more popular there than here.

@@anastasiszaro Lmao, the countries with the highest level of censorship are the non-capitalistic countries. True capitalistic countries don't care about your internet access because capitalism is inherently freedom of interaction. Only in socialistic/communistic countries do you have to be afraid of dissent and non-compliance as the very system relies on forced cooperation. I'm kind of surprised anyone is against capitalism especially in the hackerspace where we all generally value individualism and the capability of decentralized work over forced collectives.

@@DaveSmith-cp5kjyou only have to spend a few minutes on pages or forums discussing capitalism to see that most anarchists and “liberals” are indoctrinated with Marxist ideology to go against capitalism. Capitalism is flawed but it’s certainly the best of the options.

the more you talk about "adding government values to all software" the more I get the "uhh this is going to be bad" feeling. oh god, don't clap for the "politicality" of software.

I am glad for censorship as it now keeps me from wasting time debating and complaining about censorship. Now that words are no longer an option,........well, you know what is.

4:45 so, literally all things that the US government does on a daily basis. And, the few things that it hesitates to do, it'll happily subcontract out to private entities to do for it. truly masters of ethics these yanks

SouthPark nailed it. If we both start wars and protest war we become an unblamable country! Lovely isn't it!

It still amazes me how many Redditors don't have any idea who he is and what happened.

Free speech online no longer exists. That ended on the 1st of January 2024.

As much as I agree with you can you elaborate on exactly what happened specifically in January that caused that?
