You saved the owner a huge bundle of cash. Way to go brother! Back in my day, most mechanics approached repairs with the goal of not only fixing the problem, but fixing it as inexpensively as possible. Seems like this is your approach as opposed to looking to squeeze every penny possible out of the owner’s wallet. Good on ya for protecting your customer’s back!!

Great thinking on the "shortcut" for flushing the lines out, nothing worse that having to do more work than you really need. Well done. Also glad you managed to get those spring sets changed, that's some scary stuff, even if it's used "off road". Broken springs are just bad news... Keep up the great videos, Thanks!

Buddy of mine had the same problem when the fuel pump died and was told he needed a new pump so he said fine please install it in the 110 gallon fuel tank in the bed, he simply use a 3/4 drain bung about two inches off the bottom of the tank and installed a brass rotary pump to provide the engine with a regulator to give the engine consistent fuel pressure. Been working fine after he installed a fuel level sending unit without a pump. He likes the increased range. Damn, you gotta really clean the the crud out really good! This is beginning to make me want the new cyber truck Tesla just introduced as its only electrically powered 250 miles range on the base model rwd at $39,000. Cheers!!!!

It's not only the crystallization the problem, but also diesel fuel system is lubricated via diesel fuel. The water content of def will drop the lubricity of the fuel, causing higher risk of high pressure pump and injector damage. That's why gasoline has the same hazard on modern diesel cars. The lubricity of gasoline as also way lower then diesel fuels's.

We've just had this with a TCM forklift on our rental fleet. It's got a Nissan TD27 all mechanical injection engine (so no def tank 🤔) and managed to fill the fuel tank with DEF 😂. They ran it until it died. Suckers got so much blowby now it's firing the dipstick out - guess the def's either crystallised around the rings and jammed them or something hydrolocked. The injector lines and injectors are just SOLID with white crystals, the injection pump the same. My customers getting a big bill! 😂 Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 and love your weiner dog!

Plastic pieces of trash that are bound to break no matter how careful you are from just exposure to the elements. Should've just used a regular worm clamp, but that's modern 'engineering' for you...

I almost threw up when I dumped 3 gallons into my fuel tank two weeks ago. I had to start it for just about 5 seconds so I could put it in neutral and start it down hill to roll in front of my work shop. Well I dropped the full tank of fuel ( ouch $120 worth) and drained it. Washed it out with garden hose real good. The pickup pump and lines and fuel filter on the tank. Installed it and added 3 gal of power service and a gallon of Power service 911. Mixed with 5 gal of fresh fuel. Drove it for a while then added 5 more gallons. Drove it 230 miles then added a full tank. Kept adding Power Service 1 gal per full fuel tank. Drove it another 300 miles then changed both fuel filters. Cut them open and let them dry for a few days. Not one spec of crystal any where on any of either filter. I guess I lucked out. On a side note I did it twice before on my 2011 6.7. That was at 45k miles..Only a qt or so. Just drained the first filter every few miles then changed the filters out while adding lot's of power service for a while. Traded it in at 165k and still running smooth. No issues there. On a side note. Why didn't I just call Ford to come and tow it while it was just in the tank and I hadn't started it at all? Had too many important things to be done the next day and 1 week after and another 1 week after and another 1 week after. I went for it. At that point I didn't care what happed to the truck. Either it was going to run and do that all or frig it. I now have a locking gas cap that should help.

@@barrysheehan4795 I did it 3 times to the 6.7's over the years. On 3 different trucks. First two times it was only a few lites or less. I added a gallon of Power Service white and quart of Power service 911. Drained it every few miles a bunch of times. Changed the filters shortly after. Same with the 2nd truck. I kept adding Power Service White to the fuel for a while..put on about 100miles after each episode before trading up. The 3rd time I put 2 1/2 gals in. That was the post above I did. Put on 35k since last year with it so far good. But I got all of it cause I drpped the fuel tank before driving it. And washed it out and changed the filter.

I just bought my dream truck, a 2024 Sierra Denali diesel and I had not owned diesels since 2001 so I had no idea what DEF was. Salesman and service didn’t say anything. So I seen the tank beside my diesel tank and looked it up online. I seen people making this mistake and I told my wife that I am the only one that puts DEF in the truck. I labeled the 2 tanks with label machine. Should never make that mistake I hope

This reminds me of a story from down in the Bay Area where a fuel delivery driver put regular 87 Octane gas in the underground tanks for a small private airport. Of course it was suppose to be High Octane AV gas. It went into a fair number of small planes before they problem was detected. I can't recall how many thousands of dollars the company had to spend rebuilding small plane engines. This was at least 25 years ago...…..

The place we buy truck springs make u-bolts. I think it was either foolish or genius of companies to put fuel fill and DEF fill so close together. Maybe they knew they would get to sell a lot of parts. Those connectors are on there to make it easy to assemble in the factory. The manufacturers don't care about anybody that works on them later.

I know of someone that put diesel in their gasoline car. AND the best part is they realized what they where doing and still filled the tank and tried to start it. Ended up having to spent 1,500 to flush out the whole fuel system. Their 'reasoning' was they had already screwed up so they had to finish what they started...
@tiredoldmechanic1791
@tiredoldmechanic1791 5 лет назад
@@Cragified $1500? Somebody screwed them pretty bad. All they needed to do is drain the tank, fill it with gas, start the pump and bleed the fuel rail. Diesel fuel won't hurt the components like DEF can.. We had a worker put diesel in a gasoline fueled manlift. We siphoned out the tank, filled it with gasoline, took the line off the fuel pump, cranked it until gas came out, hooked it back up and started it.

Back in the 80's I drove a 1980 VW diesel rabbit. Pulled into my regular fueling station grabbed the nozzle and added 9 gallons to a 10 gallon tank. Just as I was pulling out the nozzle the attendant comes out and says don't fill the tank, we switched that to high test gasoline! What? This pump has been diesel for over 30 years I used to deliver the fuel and gas to this station. They had pumped out the remaining diesel and switched to gasoline three days earlier. This was a fuel only station no service but there was a full service station 1/3 of a mile down the street and it was downhill!!! Got out on the street and never went over 20 mph with the engine shut down and drifted into the service station and after conferring with the owner he said bring her in to the lift ( old school single cylinder ramp style lift ) put her up and the fuel tank has a small depression where the fuel line connected and back then no clamp. Opened the fill cap and drained the tank completely in just over 15 minutes. While I was waiting I went to the donut shop across the street and bought a bakers dozen of a mixed bag of donuts and brought them back to the station where I was informed the tank was empty and the fuel filter was half full of gas. Added two gallons of diesel he siphoned from the station heating fuel tank and she was idling sounding just fine. When I asked what did I owe him he said 2 gallons of fuel but I acquired 10 gallons of mixed gas, I'll just Let her sit to settle out the gas plus you come bearing gifts ( donuts ) were fine you don't owe me anything. That happened at 186,000 miles and when I finally replaced the car it had 498,000 miles on her with the original pump and injectors and still ran fine. The body rotted out as I was living in weirs beach New Hampshire. As I left his three mechanics were happily munching on donuts. I miss the old days. Cheers!!!

We worked out what she had done. Drained the tank, lines, replaced the filter and put in some fresh diesel and it started and after a couple of seconds it started and idled. With the noises it had been making i was sure it was going to be dead. All in the first week of my apprenticeship.

When Im doing these tanks/pumps or def mishaps. Spray the connectors with brake cleaner to dissolve dust/dirt built up in them.You can also hit them with pressure washer that works good too.You can soak them with water but that takes over night for it to dissolve dirt from connector and have to keep hosing it .Usually break them connectors if dont pressure wash or spray them with can of brake cleaner.Your not alone breaking many of them BS setup deals.If its country truck ya might as well add cost of lines in along with repair.Then if ya do manage to get them off without breaking , you make the customer happy when you tell them it was cheaper repair for them.

just imagine, if at all possible, something designed so horribly, that a slight sleepy driver puts def in the fuel tank costing 10,000 dollars. So ridiculous as to be unfathomable. The sooner we go to molten salt thorium reactors, to run liquid metal batteries that last as long as the truck or car, the better. sheeeeesh!!!

I drove over the road for a short time when DEF first rolled out . It wasn’t that uncommon for steering wheel holders to put everything from windshield washer fluid to water in the DEF tanks. I know that is hard to believe but it happened several times that I knew of.

Paublus Americanus AMERICANUS Stop making excuses. Everyone always blames the manufacturer when they mess up 😂. You put def in the diesel tank then, that’s on you! Not paying attention for a second ends up costing a lot sometimes.

Are usually take the gas tanks and spray them off with the garden hose and some cleaner on the inside of the gas tank out using Dawn dish soap to clean it out and put some clean fuel in Flush to get all the water and drain the rest

I’m terrified of pulling something stupid like putting gasoline in the tank. After driving gas powered vehicles for years and having a diesel Ram, only since April, I completely realize it’s a possibility. I still have to remind myself on cold morning to look at the wait to start indicator on the dash, I’ve just cranked the poor thing over dead cold on some icy mornings... unlike most older diesels this one actually will fire off and start like that! 😵

If they would just put a damn rubber boot over the fuel tank feed and electrical connections they would not get corroded and rusty.

That's what I do with mine I just put a large enough hose over it and put a hose clamp over that

I flush those connectors out with something like windex with a drop or two of dawn detergent in the bottle. spray it down, blow it out and repeat two or three times. Works like a charm.
