Defender of the Crown, for the Commodore 64, by Cinemaware - puts the player in the role of one of four Saxon knights in medieval England, in a time where the land is in turmoil as the King is dead and his crown was stolen. The Saxons and the Normans blame each other and fight for control of England
After a short introduction by Robin of Locksley himself, the game starts with a single castle and 10 soldiers at your command. From there, you have to build your army, take control of additional territories and fight and defeat the three Norman lords - and sometimes your Saxon friends as well
In addition to the basic 'build your army and conquer your opponents' the game offers several events and options that can be used to fine tune your play style: You may engage in a jousting contest where you have to knock your opponent off his horse, gaining either fame or land, or you can go raid a castle for loot or the hand of a princess, joining your houses and territories

DEFENDER OF THE CROWN is - and always will be - one of my favorite games on the Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 😺👍🕹️. Me and my friends even played this game a lot on my Amiga 500 and my friend's Amiga 1200 back in the 1990's. I still have this game - CiB - for my Commodore 64 as a disk version 😺👍🕹️. Also, it even inspired me to draw my own cat couple 😻😻, Arttu 😺 and Pamela 😻❤️🌹, with the medieval ⚔️🗡️🛡️🗝️📜 theme, as Sir Arttu 😺 and Lady Pamela 😻❤️🌹. 😺👍

I played this game countless times on my old C64. Though in my opinion unbalanced in favour of Norman lords (they have richer territories and stronger armies at the beginning of every game), after a while it could be easily beaten -- and the victory was very rewarding at the time! Great game, much nostalgia of those times. Thank you for reviewing it Cheeky Commodore Gamer!

This is probably the game I've played the most versions of. I had the NES and PC versions as a kid, played the Mac version at the computer lab at middle school, and played at least one of the Commodore versions at a cousin's house. Then in High School I got the Gameboy Advance version, and I got the PS2 Defender of the Crown, which was a unique game with a similar concept the biggest difference being you play as Robin Hood instead of playing as another Saxon noble, a few months after graduating high school.

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Yeah. I've loved strategy games as far back as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories which don't involve needles (I had a horrible experience with an IV when I was a baby and never completely got over it. I don't know how its possible to poke a baby with an IV needle a dozen times, and not hit a vein but some nurse found a way) were dad teaching me how to play Chess. Plus I've always adored Robin Hood. A version of Robin Hood was the first book I read when I was three or four, and I watched the Errol Flynn Robin Hood movie with my parents many times as a child along with reading and watching many other versions of Robin Hood later. So a strategy game where Robin Hood helped you was high on my wish list and so were any where you played as Robin Hood.

I have to agree with yourself and other commenters, one of my favourite games and an absolute classic. It was actually worth the loading time on the many floppy disks. My favourite part was the catapult. Unfortunately I don't think I ever finished the game but I have a vague memory of a tips and tricks review written in one of the computer magazines I collected. I really enjoyed cineware games they were completely unique and ahead of their time.

Cinemaware games all had that 'Wow' factor didn't they and, like you say, seemed a lot more ahead of their time, especially graphically. All coming together and unfolding like movies - which kept me absolutely mesmorised and gripped, back in the day 😇🕹️👌

Another classic.. I grew up with The Amiga version and only recently played the C64 one. They are both excellent, but the extra features for the C64 are very good.. (The Sword fighting is so tough on the C64!). I think I have played every version of this game… Defender of the Crown II for the Amiga CD32 is a bit cheeky as it’s not a sequel, just the same game with added speech and some additional features. They also dispensed with the original music which was a mistake! Robin Hood :Defender of the Crown, which is from the early 00’s for Xbox/PS2 is well worth a look if you haven’t played it and want more of the same with some nice additions.

Swordfighting on the C64 is brutal isn't it, I thought it was just me! The Amiga version blew me away with the graphics, I still cant believe it was months later that I realised you had to click the mouse for the jousting... no wonder I never won a match 😇🕹️👌

'87 was really a top year for me. R-Type & Double Dragon in the Arcades and end of summer I had worked enough money together to buy a heavily discounted Amiga 1000. And with it came Defender of the Crown, so that is all what my Amiga did the first couple of weeks. My father co sponsored the memory expansion and so he wanted to play too, but off course not because of the gorgeous women ;) First time I see it on the C64 tbh, they did a really great conversion.

87 was a brilliant year - I have to admit that apart from Rolling Thunder, Double Dragon is my all-time favourite arcade game. But for me it's one of the games that made the biggest impact. I mostly played the Amiga version. But the c64 version was mighty impressive as well. c64 was so much better for some reason. Trying to sword fight or fire a catapult with a mouse was a pain in the arse. And jousting. Could you even use a joystick on the Amiga version? I thought it came with the Amiga in some packages, I remember it beng mouse only. I remember you had much more stuff on the c64 too, with additional catappult ammo, and deploying catapults in battles.
@CheekyCommodoreGamer

While the Amiga version was absolutely gorgeous, it was a poor 'game'. The C64 version was a far better game, even though limited graphically. It was still stunning for 8-bit standards, and being able to actually control the swordfighting to win instead of just spamming the mouse and hoping, not to mention the better battle commands made the 64 version far superior, take it from one who played both to death back in the day ;-) Cinemaware's best game until Wings.
