M.U.L.E. (Also known as just... MULE), for the Commodore 64, is about four hopeful explorers trying to make a fortune on a fresh planet. This is done by producing various goods (Food, Energy, Smithore, Crystite). Each of these goods have their uses: if you don't have enough food, you will have less time during your turn
If you don't have enough energy, your output will be lower. If enough smithore isn't produced, there will be a shortage of M.U.L.E.s. Crystite is the big earner that can make or break your game

It's a really well designed game from the early 80s putting many of today's triple A games to shame.

I agree with you there, after we figured it out as kids and understood the mechanics - there was literally no other game like it. Admittedly it took a little while to explain to others how to play, but once they 'got it'... it became a game my friends would always knock on my door to come round and play, back when we were kids. Great memories 😇🕹️👌

This is one I constantly heard about. I saw the cover artwork in magazines from time to time but none of my friends played the game. Seems like we missed out. I did know though that the game has lots of fans. And I tried it later in life but probably didn't give it enough time.

If you have someone who is willing to learn the game with you, its a whole different experience... it becomes really engrossing in 2 player mode. Apparently you could have 4 players on the Atari 2600 version... that would have been amazing back in the day, I bet 😇🕹️👌

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Four players could play on the C-64, but two of them needed to be hunched near the keyboard. It was doable.

I used to load this up and just let the music play while I cleaned my bedroom or worked on other hobbies. What a banger of a theme! Also a board game of MULE was made and it’s pretty faithful to the OG game! Even having rules to hunt the Wumpus! Keep up the great content ❤️

I particularly agree with you on the importance of keeping a ill-fortuned/ill-skilled player into the game, which, in my opinion, has become rare nowadays. And definitely an intriguing concept. And so avantgarde to top it all!

I had trays full of disks for my Commodore, but no manuals for most of the games, a code wheel for a game I didn’t have, and this game was part of my C64 mess I think my main issue with this game, was that I was 11. I hadn’t thought about this game in 20+ years, Merson was calling anyway, and I liked Questron better. Beat that game, the memories of winning money and fighting town people and guards for being to good at gambling will always hold a place in my heart, but I’m mainly here because I watched some of your other videos, and you seemed like someone I could take seriously. The point, and somewhere in my fart sniffing word salad, I wanted to see the game again, watch how it’s played. I think I would have loved this game.

Aaaah Questron! One of the absolute best early CRPGs! I just won it again recently and was struck again at how epic the final reward sequence was done once you win, not to mention the tension-racking increasing beat in the final castle battle! Always glad to meet another fan of one of the true greats. I hope you also enjoyed it's true sequel,Legacy of the Ancients. Questron 2 was a poor copy made well after LotA.

Ah, this is one of those games that is visually unimpressive but if you give it a go and try to understand what's really going on it's actually a lot of fun. I'd play my brother on this all the time back in the day, but he was like a Jedi and always beat me. LOL! After the game loads we would always wait for the entire title sequence to finish: One of the most endearing themes ever for the C64 in my opinion, along with Boulder Dash.

You hit the nail on the head - it's a game that probably won't appeal to many on appearances alone. People claim to love this, but when I was a kid it was pure WTF material. It was almost as disappointing as seeing "QUICKEN" scrawled on a disk sleeve and booting up some tax crap! I liked the animation on the mule though, and that theme, but then it was like gibberish to a young kid.
@IsaacKuo

It was all about having other players explain to you what the heck to do, or possibly reading about what to do in a magazine if you were particularly sharp. Here in the USA, you were more likely to know someone with an Atari 400 or 800, and the desire to have the full four player experience meant they were willing to "pull you in" as a player even if it meant teaching you what to do for a while first. (The C64 version was limited to two human players, which meant not as much "demand" for players to play with.)

If you're used to playing in PAL, check out the opening music at NTSC speeds. It's a lot quicker in tempo. It's also worth checking out the Atari 8 bit original theme (also NTSC speed). It has 4 voices, vs the 3 voices of the C64 port, and it also has this iconic janky off-tune sound. Unlike the C64, which always had 16 bit pitch, the Atari 8-bit sound chip had 8 bit pitch when using 4 voices. This would be off key in an interesting crunchy way. Basically, there are two iconic versions of the M.U.L.E. theme (both NTSC tempo). The original Atari 8-bit version has that iconic janky sound, but the C64 version is perhaps more remembered simply because there were so many more C64 players than Atari players.
