Fort Melvill was a fortification built during the Anglo-Zulu war next to Rorke's drift in March 1879. The ruins can still be found and in this video, I went to explore them.

I also only found out about it on my last visit and I’m really glad that I did. A nice spot and well worth a visit.

Thanks for posting. It's odd really but as a young one when l saw Zulu at the cinema l recall thinking the Zulu's were intimidating but l was on their side and felt we were wrong to be there. Just my feelings.

Thank you. Great video. I have been to the Fort Melville area many times, mostly during the seventies and early eighties. I remember a smaller fortification higher up the river bank from Fort Melville fairly close to the little shop that belonged to an Asian family. Had an interesting conversation with them. They told me their shop had to screened off during the filming of the crossing of the river during the making of Zulu Dawn. I really enjoy your videos.

Hi James / thanks for the feedback. I’m not aware of the other fortification but I will look out for it next time I’m there. I think the shop you recall must have been closed now as I’ve never seen it sadly.

There was a massive debate whether Melvil and Coghill were worthy winners of the VC. Were the two saving the queen's colours, or just making a run for it?

General Wolesley thought the latter, and that it "would have been better for them to die on the battlefield".

I love your videos, sir! I wish I could visit these battlefield sites. I am 50 next month and have been an obsessive 'amateur historian', military fanatic, wargamer/simulator and I'm an ex-Royal Navy submariner myself. Any chance you get to visit Rorke's Drift again or Isandlwana, etc, please DO NOT hesitate to make another video... and another! It's the only way I can get close to places such as this as I live in England on a tight budget. Even consider showing us more of the surrounding area of Rorke's Drift if you like, such that you are 'walking in the footsteps' of the men on that fateful day. I'd love to see a 30 min to one-hour long video where you are, for example, coming round the Oskarberg and then walking/running towards the South wall area between the buildings, as was the Zulus' initial attack. Maybe also step away to the North West slightly showing us where the Zulus were traversing and seeking protection from behind the area of the trees/bushes and that 5' wall that was there in front of the hospital. A kind of a 'then and now' video would be great so that we can see what changes there are to the area and where such mentioned things were, such as the cookhouse and the outside toilet, etc. Anyway... just giving you ideas: just because you've done Rorke's Drift doesn't mean we don't want a sequel and another! Keep up the GREAT work, mate! Edit: Just noticed that you HAVE done several revisits of these battlefields, so...... yeah, keep them up! John 😊
