I hope you enjoy this last installment of seasoning aluminum pans. Seasoning is still important for aluminum pans since it help to produce a non-stick surface.

Grapeseed Oil Seasoning Process
1. Oil the pans liberally but ensure to wipe it all off. You need to ensure that you have a very thin layer for consistent polymerization of the oil
2. Bake the pan at 425 degrees for 30 mins for each of the base layers
3. Bake the final or last layer at 450 degrees for 30 mins.

I appreciate the work you did coming up with the best method for seasoning of aluminum pans. I would like to add that much of the "sticking" issue can be resolved with good cooking technique. Even well seasoned cast iron can have food stick if not used correctly. Thanks for sharing

You are 100% coorect about good cooking technique. I'm embarassed to say that I have owned cast iron and stainless steel products for years but only learned the lesson of properly pre heating your pans from doing reasearch for my egg test videos. If you have any more cooking techniques please feel to share. Thanks again for watching, cheers!

Good video. Your problems with seasoning are pretty much the same as mine. It's good to see someone being honest about the difficulty of achieving and then maintaining a non stick coating. To be honest, I have given up on the surface treatment. It's prohibitively expensive on time and electricity for little reward and I now focus more on the temperature of the pan when the food is introduced. Appreciate your work. 👍🏻

I kinda gave up on it too after my egg tests videos. Its just one of those nagging things in the back of my head that wanted me to figure it out. Thanks for watching, cheers!

That looks incredibly frustrating. I would love to have a plan like that but I don't have time to do all of that. You did good! You are persistent if nothing else. Edited to add: Well, now I know what I did wrong with my cast iron pan.

You can do it! Here is a better video on the reason for lower temps for seasoning. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-By5_xL-BPwY.htmlsi=QvgwPeuLo3cvJwqN

I applaud you for all this effort. I have one small FB pan that I seasoned 3 times with a micro thin layer of grape seed oil 1 hour each layer used for frying eggs it’s totally non stick. The large FB pan I have I seasoned when I first got it but that has over time worn away, I have found that a micro thin layer of oil brought to the smoke point and then kept at a low heat for a short while works very well for nearly everything I cook, I repeat this process after I have cleaned the pan (some warm water heated over the stove and anything stuck seems to come away easily) I personally wouldn’t go through the long seasoning process again, most important thing is having controlled heat but that’s not possible if using over a natural fire or when using alcohol. The FB pans AKA GSI minus non stick coating) are excellent pans when considering their weight,heat distribution and cooking ability. One thing I learnt was it’s essential to check the pan when its been in the oven after the first 10/15 minutes during seasoning, the oil can bead even when great care has been used to make the oil layer ultra thin, wipe out again then put back in the oven, one should end up with a nice even seasoning, no beading and no ripples.

Thanks for sharing your experince with these FB pans. Micro layers at the oil's smokepoint is what I do now. I really think that the 500 F temps most seasoning processes call for are really for cast iron pans and should not be used with aluminum pans. As you said, just to the smoke point is key. If you have anymore insight please share, thanks for watching, cheers!

Great info ' I used canola oil with 500 for an hour 6 coats and wash stuck on food with salt and water .seasoning stays Intact afte washing. I did have some sticking In the being but I just cooked bacon in it every day for a week now it's flawless nonstick .

I applaud your determination! I have a couple of Lodge cast iron skillets that look like black glass just from seasoning with canola oil and then regular use. The care of those skillets is almost a hobby in itself! I have the 10" cowboy plate/pan that I tried to season according to the FBS instructions - it just looks weird with all kinds of patterns and stripes, like the seasoning process never took. I'm thinking that unlike cast iron, maybe aluminum isn't meant to be seasoned - just make it hot, cook with oil, and barely clean it when done. Repeat over and over. Damn - now I'm hungry...

Me too, I can see bacon in my future. Thanks for the feedback, cheers!

Personally I think seasoning the cowboy plates is unnecessary. If you eat something like roasted tomatoes or red wine based casserole the seasoning will need renewing, they clean very easily in my experience.

Very interesting. I used the buzzy wax method on mine in my pellet grill and haven’t had any flaking issues.

I used a toaster for my testing which bounces around +/- 11 degrees from what my analog thermometer tells me. That pellet grill must have some magic! Cheers!

I think you did a lot of good research and trial and error. I followed the firebox instructions when I got the fire box ultra kit from the Kickstarter. Never had to redo my seasoning layer since, it’s been multiple years with multiple uses. I’m glad I didn’t have the issue that you had trying to get a seasoning layer but it’s good that you stuck with it and got to the same end result

Thanks for watching! I too used the instructions but as you saw, not very successful. It was driving me crazy. I did notice that the suggested seasoning process worked really well with the deep and shallow plate but not the pan. I did notice that the newer pans have a very smooth and polished finish which leads me to believe that this maycontributed to my seasoning issues. I may have to buy a new pan and test it out, lol some day I guess… Cheers!

@@offcourseoutdoors8366 Yes, that is what I find odd. I got my pan from the Kickstarter so it was the very first batch. That’s what I find strange about it, I know some of the newer ones they’ve tweaked a little bit. I’m glad you got it sorted and seasoned, I’m just not sure why it didn’t work the first few times. Now, I will say this, I never use vegetable oil’s. I prefer beef tallow for seasoning. Don’t know if that would have an impact or not.

Any tips for oiling after cooking?
@offcourseoutdoors8366
@offcourseoutdoors8366 Год назад
Personally, after cleaning, I like to heat up the pan a bit to get rid of any moisture. I would then apply a thin layer of oil (non-animal derived). If I still have some heat in the Firebox, I would throw the pan on until the oil just starts to smoke and pull it off. Hope this helps, cheers!

I think 6 times is to many. 3 to 4 coats max and then when you cook it will continue to season. Even the Fire Box Instructions say not to season that many times.

I agree, 3-4 is ideal. I just wanted to push it with 6. I think I did 12 one other time but I’ve calmed down a bit with the seasoning, lol. Thanks for watching, cheers!
