Deflasking Cattleyas 

I plant orchids from flask too :)) if their root are long , i will wrap them in spaghnum moss. But the small ones u can put it on top the moss, makes sure the roots attached into the moss. They love to be in the moist side when they are babies.. I sprayed them daily and makes sure the media and babies are wet because the media is not thick. For the media, i put fern on the bottom and a layer of spaghmoss on top. Good luck on your seedlings.. Keep it updated ;)

That's the best advice (READ THE LABEL) that cannot be repeated enough regarding the use of any chemical-based product; especially the "danger" portion in order to be well-prepared in case of an accident... and it should be stressed in more tutorials where it is being used.. :)

I love my orchids and have been growing(actually kept alive) for a lil over a year switched to water culture a month ago and it's been amazing for my orchids! but I have come to realize I sell my seedlings because I don't like waiting 4-5 years to see a flower IF you can keep it alive that long. I may get a flask to sell the seedlings idk I love orchids so its hard to sell even the tiny ones

Would it be wise to treat the media with Physan 20 then rinse with distilled water Incase the media is contaminated? Do you use any fertilizer or root stimulator after defasking

You say they will sit in this bigger can for about a year. Do you have to open it from time to time to get fresh air in?

I have done a number and I have never seen any that small either but then you had no choice due to condition.

oh yeah I also watched a video about keeping them in flask even when they are shipped. it says to just keep tapping the flask so the jelly settles back in place as much as possible, any thoughts on this?

how many of your babies actually made it? I just deflask ed a brassavola digbyana for my first try, crazy me but the price was just right lol. I'm so worried about them there was so many tini win ones. the sale said 25 and at least 82 on my last count!!. any tips would be appreciated thanks

3-5 for catts is really short...7-8 for regular size straight catts though I’m not sure you get those today -is more accurate before it blooms. That’s my luck...never lost many but just slow. Hope you have seen orchidspecies videos (Les Perkins). They had a huge business but all the cheap fraud ones from china, etc that were never inspected...the ones from ebay that ebay and postal service should stop were so cheap they couldn’t compete. But be careful what you buy...you can bring a lot of infection in from folks who don’t use very sanitary conditions. It is funny I did my first 2 flasks in the kitchen table, they were so big none would come out of bottle, had to break. But they did great - put in bedroom window shelves draped with plastic, tiny fans and misted anytime plastic didn’t have moisture in daytime. They were in osmunda fiber back then still wish I could find it. I loved that stuff.
