Hi Everyone, it's Annabel, welcome back to my channel!
Today we are going to be deflasking my baby orchids from their orchi-packs, into their first pots. I am choosing a self watering type system for these guys using semi hydro pots as seedlings require alot of moisture, and I feel like this will work well for them. I am also going to be comparing moss and seramis as seedling medias in this setup :-)
I hope you enjoy this video!

Great video - thank you. When you referred to ? Ceramis - can you explain what that is and do you add any water to the seedling pots at all & if so - how often?

It will be fun to watch the babies grow. Did you spray the seedlings that were in the contaminated flask,with any kind of anti fungal or antibacterial spray before potting them up? Great video,thank you

Hi, thanks, I'm excited to watch them progress (hopefully!) 😀 I didn't spray any kind of antifungal, the only one I have available is quite harsh and on a few adult orchids I've noticed it can cause some leaf pigment loss so I was worried about using it on the babies. I also have some bleach I could have tried but again worry a chlorine bleach solution would be too harsh for them. I cleaned them off, dried and took the watch and wait approach. Hopefully good air flow will keep the mould and infections at bay but will have to see 🤞🤞

@@TheOrchidRoom It is so, but you did everything possible in home environment to keep them alive and going. Brilliant idea with heating tray filled with water to increase humidity around the seedlings! Fingers crossed for them! I would love to follow their progress. 🌱🤞🏼🌸

Best of luck with your new orchids. I don't have the experience or patience to wait 4/ 5 years to flower. Incidentally, do you give your plants a "cooling off " to ensure flowering? Thanks for the videos
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 года назад
Thanks 😀 Do you mean the average temp drop to initiate flowering for phals? I don't do it intentionally but they spike regardless, the seasonal change seems to be enough even though I make sure the grow room stays warm 😀
@jamescostablanca3716
@jamescostablanca3716 4 года назад
@@TheOrchidRoom Thanks for the reply and yes you guessed correctly. Many growers advise cooling the phals to improve blooming but it's a bit difficult when several types of orchids share the same grow room. Any idea what temp min/max you have in the grow room in winter?
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 года назад
@@jamescostablanca3716 I don't let it go below 18C and it maybe gets up to 25C sometimes in winter when the rest of the house heating clicks on. But many of my phals are spiking already and it hasn't gone below 20C yet. My belief (I know it's a contested area 😂 ) is that it's average temp drops. So this year our summer was frequently over 30C. So seasonally that's a reasonable temp drop. I know there's a night temp drop theory and maybe it's that too. Just from observing mine in a relatively heated environment and still getting spiking I'd say you could definitely still get a good blooming keeping them with all your other orchids (unless you plan in heating super high 😀 )

Nicely done! The mold was actually worse than I thought.... you might need to ask for money back since those are a bit too small in my eye to survive out from the flask yet. We need to make more seedling videos in my opinion since when I was thinking about it before I started working at Olympic Orchids, there wasn’t much information... even if there was, there wasn’t follow-up updates.... well I guess it will take years of updates! Lol anyway, what I found out is air flow and moisture level most important than anything... lower light wouldn’t kill them that quick but mold, root rot, and too strong light will kill them almost instantly. My seedlings gets dry before I water but I pay attention to it almost everyday... but I like them to almost dry out. I use exclusively sphagnum moss only and still dry out in time since my fan is on 24/7

Its annoying it was on the flasks with the younger seedlings in! I agree that they could have done with longer- Some of them were so tiny, I'm a little worried. Keeping air flow high and hoping for the best! They are next to a little fan but still on the heat mat/water bath combo so I'm hoping that will keep the humidity high enough that the air flow won't dry them too much! If it doesn't then we've learned not to deflask this small I guess....😅

Hi. I would very much like to see the progress of these please. I live in the Caribbean and deflasked in April. The roots were very long. I used sphagnum mixed with perlite into individual tiny pots and I cannot say that they look happy. I am quite concerned about them.

Hi there. The 3 month update is linked in the description 🙂 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yPs7itptrAk.html . I then put out a community post saying I would be collecting data over a long period of time and publishing in one video, since I think people find it hard to follow and find videos for update series. Hope that helps. I found that sphagnum gave lots of issues in my climate, and had to rescue those seedlings. I tend to do image updates in the community tab or Instagram in the mean time, while I compile videos. Update on the moss seedlings 2 weeks after the above linked video: instagram.com/p/B9BmYpnh86W/?igshid=ttpv3xl9noyf It's also posted on my community if you don't have insta 🙂

"they can be a little bit prone to rotting" this has been my issue with both mini flasks I have tried. Entirely the reason I didn't buy the flask of Dendrobium maccarthiae, I couldn't see buying such a rare species when I don't have enough experience growing from flask although I want that plant desperately.
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 года назад
😭 But you need the Maccarthiae, it's you! 🤔 I'm keeping the air movement high, don't really want to nuke them with antifungals from the start- but I have antifungals and bleach solutions on hand if things take a nose dive. My other flask babies survived last year but they were also bigger then some of these. The sophronitis is so tiny!

@@TheOrchidRoom I just received a C. dowiana which was advertised as a seedling. Should have been listed as fresh out of flask, it is miniscule. I have it in a 1 inch/2.5 cm pot and there is tons of room for it to grow.

Hello Annabel, any updates and noticeable differences after a month? I also encountered the issue of flasks contaminated in transport, unfortunately on the smaller ones as well... If the Epidendrums seem to root in pretty much every setup possible (leca, sphagnum, leca + kanuma topping), my Coelogynes seedlings seem to want to rot in pretty much everything, I'm really at a loss with those :(
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 года назад
Hi! They're all doing well, no losses. They need a bit longer to adjust but have all started new roots. The ones in seramis maybe slightly better overall but it's a bit early to tell. I'll do an update soon - thanks for reminding me 😀 Sorry to hear that, it's a real pain. Of course it was the smaller ones you had it happen to aswell...😥 maybe it would be an idea if you're getting lots of rot issues regardless of media to up the air flow? Maybe not a fan directly on them but nearby? Then of course you risk them drying too much so it's not ideal but at the same time I can't think of another way you could stop the rot. Do you have any antifungal and antibacterial options like physan where you are located? Soaking them in something like that after deflasking may help. The only ones in the UK would be very harsh options or mild bleach solutions and I didn't want to mess around with them. But I know there are different options in different countries... just a thought 😄
@sjusovare
@sjusovare 4 года назад
@@TheOrchidRoom I tried H2O2 3% without any effect whatsoever (the coelogynes are the ones from the contaminated flasks by the way), I'm pondering about ordering another flask of the same to see if it's the initial contamination issue (even the roots rotted in leca on the tallest ones) or if it's that coelogynes really dislike wet media (the only one which seems to not go tottally downhill is the one in bark+kanuma, with no self watering whatsoever)
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 года назад
@@sjusovare H202 is only really a surface/contact antibacterial so it may not have been enough if the infection was already too far along 🤔. In your environment it sounds like a drier media with more air flow may be the way to go then... But like you say it also could just have been they were already infected beyond rescue when you got them out 😢 Definitely think it's worth trying again! 😄
