In this video we're replating phalaenopsis pallens seeds which were sowed invitro. The orchid media used is P668, and the original seeds were sown dry seed with hydrogen peroxide at 3% to disinfect the seeds. Germination happened after about 4 weeks and the orchids have been growing from seed since. I may replate these phalaenopsis seedlings one more time before the final deflask; but this essentially covers the steps required to understand how to grow orchids from seeds.

Thank you so much for documenting your process and the growth of your seedlings!! I've always been intimidated by the idea of growing orchids from seed but, after growing them for a few years and watching your seedling videos, I feel ready to give this a shot. I self-pollinated one of my orchids a couple of days ago, I'm excited to see where this goes.

Wyatt about putting a hole I each of the short sides. In one out a heap filter on the other a fan that sucks the air out. The flow should pull through the filter out the fan and remove the humidity during time your using. Bigger plastic containers would make it closer to a fume/sterile hood. Hello. Thank you fir sharing your knowledge with us. I have decided to try to. But before I get started I have a few questions which I hope you can help me with. I have new and used normal glass marmelade containers with metal caps. I also have a pressure cooker. My questions: I can not se how many psi my pressure cooker generates. How much water should I pour inside? A tiny lewel over the media? For how long should I autoclave the glass. Should the metal lid be on. Should I close the lid or keep it slightly open. I have notized that you have small holes on the caps with a plaster on. Is this so the oxygen is able to get out when the hydroperoxide evaporates? Is it still sterile when the hole with the plaster is present? My seed pots are developing nicely. But they are still green so I have the time to prepare so I can be successful. Thank you so much for your chanel. It is a pleasure to see your beautiful orchids. Greetings from Denmark.
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
If your pressure cooker is "electric" (like a InstantPot) it only goes to ~10PSI and it won't work. I tried this...i ended up with contamination of every flask. It has to be 15PSI and most pressure cookers for canning will offer this detail. For the lids during/after pressure cooking - the goal is not to create a tight seal (or you will have a negative pressure in the flask which will pop and suck air in); you want a tight seal after you flask, so what I do is pressure cook the jars with the lid loosely on the jar. Then after pressure cooking, I let everything in the pot come down to room temperature before I open the pressure cooker, then I work quickly to tighten all the jars without getting air into them. I hope that helps a bit

I love what you have done with your orchids. I am going to be new to growing seedlings but I have been working with rescues (gifts and store bought) using water culture, as I have had issues with gnats and white mold with organic media. They have been doing well for the most part but if too much moisture is there for too long the mold will start to present again. How do you keep your pests and other bacteria under control after the seedlings have been deflated and potted? What are your thoughts of water culture? I want to very much want to experiment with growing from seeds but I want to get the environment of the other plants perfected first. I am most grateful of any advice!
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
Thanks symunde davis! I wish you the best of luck with your growing. To answer your questions: - I avoid mold issues by following wet/dry cycles. Allowing the media to dry slightly between waterings, but not so much that the roots desiccate. - I do have fungus gnats - I use pinguicula (butterwort) carnivorous plants to help keep those numbers down. - water culture...I think is overrated and if someone looked into the science of it, I think you’d find many compelling reasons why water culture isn’t a good option for most orchids and/or most people. That said, there are a small subset of people who do water culture well and if you want to experiment, then all the power to you. - specifically growing from seed I don’t think is hard; however, it takes a lot of time (few years before you’ll see flowers) and once you deflask, the seedlings require slightly more care than the adults (following those wet/dry cycles). Hope that helps!

Hello, for the terrestrial orchids, you need to put them in full darkness, it help much to grow, my paphiopedilum spicerianum seeds took around 3 mounths to grow a bit then nobody can stop them. I have 49 littles babys growing sins 5 mounths now. For the européens terrestrial orchids, a scientifique pdf said that it's better to put them in the fridge for 4 mounths before showing.
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
Very interesting. So...I have a few flasks of the ophrys which are in permanent darkness. They haven't germinated yet - but I've had a couple germinate which were in light. The flasks in light are nearest the floor so they get a cool draft and I'm hoping this "cold stratifies" them sort of naturally. Time will tell though. I think my fridge may be too cold for that species as I've read that apifera generally stays around 10c. Will be fun to see what happens. Thanks for your comment and insights

Very few germinated and thereafter they did poorly. I deflasked them early in the hope I could offer better conditions exvitro, but they quickly died from mold. @@HerebutNot well, you're leaving behind petrochemical residues that could be harmful to orchid roots. Whether or not they will cause harm, I can't say. Hahaha - right?! I actually think the international shipping stuff has to do with CITES permits and the prohibition of international trade of threatened species.... Now... I think it's complete garbage because a) I'm producing hybrids; b) I'm producing NEW plants not taking them from the wild; and c) if the concern is around preventing invasive pathogens like nematodes...well who cares, the plants are in vitro and 110% clean. lol For the soot - I donno if it's harmful. I've done that a few times now, so I'm not too worried...if I get more hardcore into this, I'll pick up a butane torch. I don't have any fire in my condo except for that crappy lighter though lol. No need for it.

Thanks for the detailed informative videos! at 24:50 you dropped 1 and you said those will be not growing up. I assumed that it was because it touched the paper. But will it continue to grow if you clean it immediately with H2O2? or is it gone the moment it is dropped on the paper soaked with 10% chlorine solution?
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 4 года назад
It could continue to grow - but the risk of contamination is higher because it made contact with the paper towel which may not be perfectly or totally sterile. Paper towel goes from outside to the inside, so i consider it less ideal and anything that touches it is potentially contaminated. Also, for one plant, it's not worth the risk of contaminating the rest. But...if you had a second flask or something, you could always put it there if it was very special and there were few seedlings to begin with - or don't be a klutz like me hahaha.
