Broadway cast of HAIR 'Let The Sunshine In' Defying Inequality: The Broadway Concert Feb 23, 2009 Gershwin Theater PS: I was close but the podium was in the way a lot.... sorry!!
The transition from Gavin, fantastic voice, to the girls and her two different voice scales bufff gives me chills and goosebumps, AMAZING ❤. Great casting that takes me back in time to the original HAÏR 👏👏👏
omg. i saw it on broadway with this exact cast last night (for the second time!) and i just have to say that it is the most AMAZING play i have EVER seen IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!! it was absolutely incredible!!! i cried so much at the end lol.
I saw the original Hair on Broadway in 1970. I was a freshman in College. It was more than a musical it was an historical event that was sending a powerful message delivered through the music and the lyrics. The people in the original play weren't acting, they were just replicating the lives they lived everyday. I imagine many of them wore the same clothes to the theater they wore in the play. It can never be replicated or copied because one had to be part of the events of the time to truly understand and appreciate the message the play delivered.
The problem with this performance was that it was too joyous. The original was a dirge, a plea, a prayer. The Fifth Dimension turned it into a pop song, which isn't a crime, but removes the moving context from the original, which, like the musical it's from, is suffused with anger, pain, defiance and joy that surfaces in spite of it all. Watch the performance from the 1969 Tony Awards to see the difference in approach. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xlCilKlqrvI.html
Before reading your comment I just recently saw "West Coast cast of HAIR - "Smother Brothers" show, 1968" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NJYYcmF2TI8.html here on youtube and started to cry when they sang "let the sun shine in". I saw this new revival when it came to Ft. Lauderdale in 2010, and though I enjoyed it a lot I did not feel the same emotion as I did with that one performance from the The Smother Brothers show. I think this is a new interpretation for the current generation and times.
@@musicmusic65 to be specific this generation is disconnected and desensitized to war, and back then they had the draft and a very real fear of being sent to a very unpopular war. They were truly fighting for their lives.
@@twasbrillig33 ... yeah, the unmeasured cost of war... I grew up without a dad who unfortunately I barely knew. A day rarely goes by without me thinking of it. Could be a TV show of a father/son moment..... anything.... lifetime heartache. Factor that into GDP.
AGREE!!!!! This song is so obviously full of anguish but it's become too much of a power ballad so it strips it of its true meaning. That being said this cast is Tremendous. But it irks me to see people perform the song the way they do now and hear audiences clap like its some kind of gospel number. Nothing wrong with gospel of course but it just isn't the right approach for this song.
I'm late to this clip but wow wow wow. This cast sings the best version of this song i have ever heard. Gavin Creel, what a talent, what a voice!! Also, very easy on the eye.... Such an emotional and beautiful song. It gives me chills....
He does have a tough group to beat, but I saw several of the nominees and none compared to the emotions I felt while watching Gavin Creel in Hair. One of the best performances I've ever seen.
wow. I was in my school's performance of HAIR this year as Sheila and I had thought we did a pretty good job of entering the character but wow...this is just fantastic. Makes me wanna step up my game a little haha :)
I can't stop watching this! Thanks so much for posting it, Jamchee79! Like others have said, I get chills watching this. And your camera work was great!
What an amazing job these guys have !!! I mean you can tell by their expressions how much fun they're having when they're performing, I guess that's what makes it so incredible and gives everybody in the audience goosebumps !!!
I've seen clips and heard the official soundtrack album from the original (1968) Broadway production with James Rado, Diane Keaton, Melba Moore, etc...and, of course they are the original, so they OWNED it. But, after seeing the '09 revival with Gavin Creel & Will Swenson and the rest of that amazing cast - I can't imagine anyone - even the OBC - doing this show better. I think they were better. If there was just one Broadway musical to see in your life. "Hair" would be the one.
nah, you can clearly hear kacie doing the lower part and caissie for once actually sings the high part. they've changed around who sings it since they were doing it in the park.
oh yeah?& what does your name mean??if you're a psychologist hear that Yeah i'm total wanna be drama club graduate, but aint gonna smell the stage only because i'm greek & not that rich to pay for vocal classes or for tickets to america.but you know what?i'm glad i can't because i at least have the moral value of not judjing peole i know nothing about just because i disagree with them& if you knew rock so well you'd know what my name is really about.careful cause what shines isn' always gold
This performance of this particular song is not about choreo. at all. They are simply performing the song for equality at a benefit...out of context!!!!! Watch the performance on youtube of the actual show if you care to know what the show is about and the incredible message it has. Don't be ignorant and know that you always have something to learn no matter how old you get.
what are YOU listening to???have you heard james rado or mark seibert in this part...and in fact i bet anyone who thinks this performance is good doesn't know history at all...it's about people dying in war but this cast is already dead to protest...
Excellent song, and conveys a beautiful message never let the sun shine in our lives. very good these guys really sing beautifully. Of course the original version is much better, and today everyone with his style and despite the years still enjoy. remains in good time
Ahhh I loooove this song! I think I've watched this vid 20 times already! I loove Hair! I saw it a few weeks ago and hope to see it again when I get back from school!! Definitely a show you have to see 2ce! Such a funnn timeee!!! Especially the end! = D It looks like such a fun show to be in. The actors seem to be very close, which makes the show even better!
No, we didn’t stop it. The Pentagon Papers, stolen by Daniel Ellsberg, read into the Congressional Record, proved the US government MADE UP the “reason” (Gulf of Tonkin attack) the US declared war on Viet Nam. Lots died, lots were disabled, lots MADE A SHITLOAD OF MONEY OFF THE WAR!!! That was the purpose. Ellsberg’s heroic release of government documents made “the public” face the fact we are killers for profit. Mr Ellsberg is on his deathbed at this time (5/23) with cancer. Buy his book, honor his patriotism, have the strength to oppose wars!
I’m an aging geezer & saw Hair in 1970 in Los Angeles. I understood the message then - war is when rich men order the working class to kill other working class people so the rich men can invest wisely in war profiteering and get richer. The working class are supporting be honored for dying to make the rich even richer. In 2023, the rich are killing the poor again for personal profit, and it’s called “defending democracy.” Anyone who believes that ……….. And yeah I liked seeing it live and with one of the original casts, And when we really were in the zodiac sign of Aquarius. But any way the war message can get through to stupid Americans is a good way, I say. NO TO NATO! NO TO WAR! 🥺✌️🕯🙏🏻😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Gavin's singing is amazing. All of the singing is amazing. But is it real?? These performers could be the grandchildren of the original Broadway cast. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it's being revived and that it's so well received!
I saw the L A performance in Summer 1970. It’s as real as Death, and dying & killing for another’s profit is what Hair is all about! Don’t forget that!!! The US has never changed since Nam. 😭😭😭😭🕯🕯🕯🕯✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
yeah ok i heard it.i think what i don't like about him is that he's more like a pop artist in a rock part and what i don't like about the revival is that is turned most songs to pop intead of the folk rock whick was initially the genre of the musical.also i think that (at least some) and members of the tribe are a little too old to play the young rebels(in the particular performance noone seems much of a rebel-let's accept that hippies were rebels!)
it's ok, i'm rude most of the times (...).i love all the performances of "hair"song i've seen (in youtube), its exactly what i expected; choreography and performance.but the flesh failures still disapoint me.probably because i love the song too much or because i'm a little jealous of sheila(.......!), but i certainly prefer the german independent production with seibert-he's just got it in the eyes & i do prefer him a thousant times over creer, even though the latter is not that bad after all...
Dearie i'm only 18 years old-younger than y!I haven't studied voice but i have studied Rock and this perfomance doesn't rock no matter what-may be a great dramatic play, or a good vocal performance but is Politically Correect and doesn't rock no way!!!!!!!and since i'm a dancer too, don't tell me that this is a lively choreography...(i don't how it is in the original show) because it is suposed to be a musical-meaning not only singing required but dancing & moving as well. Yours sincerely...
18 is older than some and you can tell and 11 year old how wise you are and what you've experienced but don't claim to be too wise beyond your years with not many years to back you up. You have the right to your opinion, but I must say in my opinion its the wrong one Silvergirl
if u listen really carfully you can hear some ridiculous riffer at like 3:41 whose hitting at least like an F# i think, cant wait for the CD to come out, does anyone know when it comes out
@eponinesyndrome-- oh, I knew that :) it's just that in this performance, it's only kacie and caissie with microphones, so it's kind of obvious that caissie take her lower part while kacie sings the higher harmony, which I know she doesn't usually do. hence my comment.
well yes the ORIGNAL cast has been out for forever, i also the the benefit concert version which is AMAZING i was just wondering when this one comes out, i hope its soon!!!!!
they just killed that, in a good way i mean, they kill this song, every single one of them are amazing, this is ridiculous, im watching this again for the 10th time haha i cant wait to see it
I am so grateful they are over here in London and feel like the most luckiest person in the world to have danced with and met them. They are all amazing, beautiful people.
Ahhh! I saw this last night!! SOOOO GOOOOD!!! AMAZING!! GO SEE IT IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE!!!!!!! = D =D I CANNOT wait till the new soundtrack comes out!!!
WOW ! So great ! The more you watch it, the more you realize how they build their passion for Hair from one anougher, and BELIEVE ME it's a win -- win situation ! I love it.
the only thing is, each time it's done now , be it Broadway or civic theatre, it has a distinctly different feel and look than when it 1st opened. mostly because it was about and of a time And that only happens once. this concert or the show though are a good representation or interpretation. it meant something different then than now.
It’s 5/23, and we have again created a proxy war and are killing for profit. Try really listening to the words of all the songs in Hair! It is a plea for peace and sanity.
