Yo, this show broke every barrier that ever existed. So raw, so real, so well done. I remember this episode like it was yesterday. Brilliant.

Mrs Perry was my mother She was a teacher for the Scarborough Board of Education Mom went above and beyond for the students She coordinated a break dance club in the early 80s for her students at Midland collegiate ,among the other accomplishments, she had a masters degree in English literature from Western University Mom passed away in Nov 2019 ,not a day goes by that I don't miss her.

This was part of the early nineties epidemic of television shows featuring heterosexual males contracting HIV from a single unprotected encounter with a female.

This is one of the episodes I remember from back in the day. After rewatching I realized how impactful this episode is.

I know Dwayne was a huge asshole on the show but I did feel really bad when he got H.I.V. I’m just happy to see Joey having maturity and understanding and kind to Dwayne.

One of the best storylines I enjoyed this i hated how Dwayne was a huge bully to others especially Joey he Dwayne really bulled Joey so badly when Dwayne got hiv it changed him and him and Joey understand each other and Joey felt bad for him as well Dwayne was also concerned with himself as well if he going to die or not sadly it wasn’t fully completed wanted to see more of this with Dwayne.

Met this guy in a bar in Cornwall. Shorter than I thought. I called him out for picking on Joey Jerimiah. We laughed. He was shocked that I recognized him. 1 channel in Canada where I live.

Joey is the only one not scared of him after finding out

My favourite storyline of the entire series, hands down. The actor who played Duane was a pretty average actor up until this point but he did such a good job of portraying all the emotions a person in his shoes would feel. When his friend asks him to dance at the end while his other friend runs away, I got teary eyed. Duane’s reaction to being asked to dance was so touching. It was all just so realistic. I loved this show so much.

One of my favorite STD storylines in T.V history. Dwayne didn't get it by sleeping with a guy or sleeping around. He just slept with one girl. He got it for being careless. He thought there was no need for a condom bc she was on a pill. That's what happens with ppl a lot. Even now a lot of ppl still see the bigger risk of unprotected sex, other than an unwanted pregnancy. If Dwayne didn't just see the bigger risk of unsafe sex and use a condom or better yet ask Penny to get tested then his faith could have been different. If Penny's ex didn't apply for the forces and got a blood test down, then Dwayne, Penny, and him would have gone so much longer without knowing they had HIV since from the looks of it they didn't show any symptoms. Many ppl who have an STD don't show symptoms for months, or their symptoms can easily be confused with something else esp HIV. The spoke people who were HIV positive didn't even look sick,. How they talk about the discrimination they felt being HIV positive including by medical professionals. With Dwayne, he did lost friends for being HIV positive. Many ppl treated him like some type of disease. There is Joey who despite the fact Dwayne was a bully and could have used him being HIV positive to his advantage didn't. He showed him support, gave him a ride, and didn't wanted his money not bc he was HIV positive bc it didn't feel right to take his money, he didn't want to earn money got of someone else suffering. He only took it bc it would make Dwayne feel better.

Joanne is a goddamn rockstar.

Back then there wasn't by treatment it was a death sentence

He was only in a couple of handfuls of episodes (main in just 2, IIRC), but Dwayne (Darrin Brown) was and always will be, my favourite character of the entire series and this was such a poignant, important episode, I never remembered exact scene visuals or anything (aside from the washroom scene; that's iconic), but certain lines have stuck with me to this day (first saw this when I was 8, turning 35 this year), like the phone conversation and the way Joanne delivered the saliva line. It taught me from a young age that the virus is not as bad as it was portrayed (though still awful, of course) and that people can live normal, everyday lives and that people do not need to he shunned: in retrospect, I think I now realise that I gained/developed the vast majority of my empathy, from this show. Through all of the sad storylines, the over the top situations and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we are all people, doing our best to live our lives the best we can, each day and there is so much shit to navigate, if we can help one another and be there for each other, we will always endure. This show was that in spades, ultimately and it continued with TNG as well. Sorry for the essay.
