Sounds great for you. But she can eat 6 apples and not realize the huge number of calories she is consuming. I bet she see them as not only delicious but healthy snack. Instead of the original candy.

When my son was working in Afghanistan several years ago, he asked me to send him an apple peeler during "apple season". One day the Afghani general walked by, picked it up, and took it home. He said, "my wife will love this!

My families favorite treat in the fall is dehydrated apples . I dry them to a leathery stage & leave them in a round. Of course it has space in the circle. I used the apple peeler like you did on this show. I then dip them half way into either melted carmel or homemade carmel. I lay them on parchment paper & let them cool. I then dip over the carmel with white chocolate and sprinkle a light mixture of cinnamon and sugar. These have a long shelf life and make great Christmas gifts.

I bought that vacuum gizmo and it works well. Because my dry cat food is a bit expensive, I buy it in bulk and seal it in half gallon jars., opening one jar at a time. My cat didn't like the food when it reached the bottom of the bin so I'm counting on this technique to keep it fresher and tastier.

I have a lot of Italian prune plums and when I dehydrate them, I prefer them to be a little softer. I have found I can pasteurize them by using my steamer basket. First, i dehydrate the plums until they are crispier than I want. Then, I steam a quart jar upside down to sterilize it, as well as the lid. Next, I steam the plums, moving them around in the steamer basket with tongs to make sure they are all pasteurized. Then, I put them in the jar and put the lid on and screw a ring on. They will vacuum seal themselves as they cool(or you could vacuum seal them). This way, I am able to store softer dried prunes at room temperature, otherwise they would mold. I have stored them this way for years with no spoilage. I’m sure you could do the same with other fruit, such as apples, if you prefer them softer.

If you used a sharpie to write on the lid, wipe it off with isopropyl alcohol. The pen is alcohol based, and using alcohol to clean off works well.

Now how did you know I picked a tub of my apples yesterday and decided to dehydrate this year? Last year I made apple sauce in small jars (because a lot of the apples were small and I didn't feel like peeling, etc.). I also sliced the larger apples, did the color preserve dip, cinnamon and brown sugar shake in a bag and then froze for pies, cakes, muffins. Freezer space is limited this year, so going to start dehydrating apple slices assorted ways. Apples are a bit tart because I have to pick them before the crows discover the perfect time to pick 'at' them. Still have 2/3 of the tree left to pick. Think I'll have to finally also use my Breville countertop oven with a dehydrating setting to process all those apples along with the big dehydrator. Great to find out I do not have to dip or sprinkle with anything to prevent browning. I didn't know that! Thanks again for teaching this old dog new tricks.

H the memories! Peeling, coring and slicing apples for drying was on Summer chore I didn't complain about! We sun dried them. I use a dehydrator but nothing beats the flavor of sundried apples. I may have to break out the dehyrator and get some apples. Yum! We used them for apple stack cakes and fried pies.

I have always dehydrated apples this time of year. What a pain, peeling, coring and slicing. I purchased your peeler/corer/slicer. WOW!!!!!!!! What a game changer! Only one problem, my husband was home and when he saw how easy it was, he took over the process and ended up eating the pieces of apples that he deemed too small to dehydrate. 😂 Also purchased the dehydrator and have it going right now. I keep checking to see if it is working because it is so quiet. My old one sounded like a plane taking off! Thank you so much for this video!

How do you make apple butter?
@susanthole8783
@susanthole8783 Год назад
@@vickiesheppard4840 take all your scraps, peels, cores and all. Put them in a roaster pan overnight in the over very low temp.225* add some cinnamon if you like. In the morning, let it cool. Run it all through a food mill. The food mill will take the peelings, seeds, and everything you don't want to eat out. What's left is apple butter. It's a lot darker than applesauce, but, is lovely on toast or serving with pork. I've made pastries with it. I've found that when I'm doing a huge batch of apples, I just can't let all that "wasted apple meat" go to waste!
@vickiesheppard4840
@vickiesheppard4840 Год назад
@@susanthole8783 Thank you for the info! Does that apple butter solidify somewhat as it cools, since it is liquid enough to be run thru a food mill? Curious how it gets to its final texture...

I just bough the peeler-corer-slicer and love it! It was so satisfying to prepare the apples in a fraction of the time it used to. I don't like the peels on as they can be sharp. I also like crispy. I make a glaze made of honey, lemon juice, vanilla extract(home made), cinnamon and a pinch of sea salt and brush it on them before going into the dehydrator. 😊 Yummy. I managed to crank out (letterally) 9 pounds of apples vacuum sealed and on shelf.

I sliced the whole bunch and put them in the dehydrator out on the screened in porch. Mmm! Sweet as candy! My grown son loves dehydrated canned pineapple chunks. He once ate the equivalent of three large cans in one sitting when he was a kid! Lol! I gave him a dehydrator when he moved out.

Like you, Pam, I have been dehydrating apples for decades - since early 1970s. I inherited my Aunt Max's apple peeler/corer/slicer (likely from the 1940s). It is my favorite kitchen tool, after my pressure canner. I do drop the apples in lemon water after processed, then cut in half before adding to dryer trays. I will start them at 155* for few hours, then I turn dryer down to abt 135. It does take a full day and sometimes night. As you say, the time and temp is not critical (except for greens and herbs). I vacuum seal them in bags as I don't have enough pantry space for jars. Leathery or crispy doesn't matter to me. Rehydrated, they make yummy tarts and other desserts. But primary use for me is just as snacks! Dehydrated apples with a jar of canned caramel makes a wonderul tasty gift!

Thanks for sharing, Pam. I started cubing my aolles to dehydrate last year for dog treats & decided I like them better cubed for myself as well. • Peel apples, leaving a ribbon of flesh on the peels. • Cube apples. • Marinate cubes in pineapple juice for 30 min (or longer). Remove cubes & marinate peels. • Dehydrate until desired crispness. I like the peels crunchy & the cubes almost crunchy. I also maribate peaches & other fruits in pineapple juice, reserving the juice after each fruit. In the end you have a wonderfully delicious fruit juice.

Then strain juice off, add sugar to taste (only needed for tart apples), boil and jar. Process as recommended for size as jars.
