Hi Del, terminology may be different from paint shop to paint shop , but the fisheye reaction is caused by silicon residue from polishes and lubricants. Any panel painted must be cleaned thoroughly with a piece of clean work shop wipe and a hydrocarbon based cleaner, usually known as panel wipe or pre paint cleaner. I'm retired from painting now but I would always clean a panel at least twice using a panel wipe soaked wipe followed by a dry work shop wipe, and then repeat using fresh clean workshop wipes. silicon is very persistent stuff and its very common! panel wipe doesn't cost much but it is essential for any auto spraying job!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hi Stuart, Yes silicone, the scourge of any paint shop... in fact, i usually cover the black engine finish on Penny's Triumph in silicone to make it look shiny.. but as i knew we were gonna paint this bike i stopped using it about two months ago so there's none in the area... sadly most polishes now contain it too, so yeah, i hear it called "wax & grease remover' all the time in videos, but like you i always remember it as panel wipe... Thanks for your input buddy, its great to get some insight from the trade... take care.. Del.

Hi Byron.. ive been doing paint work for many years, i know whats needed and how long it takes, i could have easily painted this in a single or two tone colour myself.. but what Mackie brings is the talent for the art... thats i dont have.. lol

Hi D&P, your channel just gets better and better with time , really buzzing to see this paint work , can't imagine that you've had too much time out on the "new" Harley given the time you've spent in the garage lately so I've gotta tell you mate just in case you've forgotten but the clocks go back next month and the days get colder so be fair on yourself and put a few miles on it . Best regards to the both of you , ride safe C.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hey Charlie, We have indeed been pretty flat out over the last few months with the garage, we have a video to make tomorrow for Saturday upload, (a quick distraction back to the Triumph for one video,) and a Q&A, then filming all day Saturday while we do the artwork and clear coat on the Turbo bodywork.....but the support we're getting from all you viewers is making it such fun, we dont feel thew time go by ,its just a buzz all the way... With the Harley Switchback. One of the reasons (among many) for buying it was its weather resistance due to lack of chrome, and the huge screen for bad weather riding.... this weekend just gone i went to the Storming the Castle rally up in Durham, a 7 hour ride each way, 670 miles on three days, and the ride back was in heavy rain on busy roads... but i LOVED it.. the bike ran like a dream ,and its already smothered in the FS365 protector oil and no longer shiny... it'll get ridden all winter at any opportunity, and thats what its for.... so i know what you mean, sunny coast road miles are awesome...but this is England, and we have to ride in the rain if we want to do more then 300 miles a year. lol... One thing you are right about though, i want to stick a few miles on the Turbo bike before the dark nights close in, as thats NOT a wet weather bike ..lol Thanks buddy, really appreciate your support, take care., Del.

Moonfleet41 thanks for all the info mate ,well pleased to hear you got some q time out on the bike , I ride all year round too but the enjoyment level on the bike goes up so many notches when the roads are dry and the rubber is stickier and I don't have to spend 10 minutes peeling of the layers in the coffee shop LOL . The main thing is enjoy the bike as we all do whenever we can . The reason we do it is known only to us who do it , that's why we acknowledge each other out on the road and the vast majority of us will stop to offer help and support to a stranded rider and long may that continue. As the T Shirt says , " only a Biker knows why a dog sticks its head out of the window " ..... Ride safe mate , catch up on the next vid.

Hi Del your prep work is awesome! .I will be trying to spray my tank gloss black but would it still need to flat it down before any sort of petrol resistant clear coat or lacquer in a spray can ? Can you recommend any ? .Thanks, keep up the great work and ride safe ☺👍
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
Hi buddy, very few products in a rattle can are actually petrol proof, unless you're talking about, maybe, the aerosol mounted 2 pack systems, but you could buy a gloss version of the black and just polish it... ?

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hey Mike.. Yeah the Pro guys use them for all key-up sanding when there is no imperfections to rub out, just a scratch up for paint.. they are a lot more forgiving and wont go through the paint nearly as much..
@HalfdeadRider
@HalfdeadRider 7 лет назад
Do you use a different type of paint on the plastics or a different primer or both? Looking forward to the final vids, I hope all goes well.
@Moonfleet41

The Tough Black paint doesn't need any primer, its really forgiving and goes over practically anything.. Thanks for your good wishes..

Thanks for your kind support buddy, we're just trying to keep things changing a bit so it doesn't get boring, got a little job on the Triumph next, the turbo paint should be done and online in the next week.. and then back to the fighter build... and just staving off the middle age spread with a bit of circuit training and lay off the beer for a bit... got to keep in shape as the middle years roll by aye...lol

If you were going to simply clear coat over the black would you still scuff it with the gray pad?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 лет назад
Yes always good to flat down the black if you are going to clearcoat it after it has dried.. but if you want to clear it at the same time as painting, then just wait the usually time between coats, and make the last three coats clear... Hope that helps.. Del.

Great video Del - I'm myself planning to repaint my FZ6 to yellow in the near future ( at least the tank, because the previous owner covered some damage under the sticker) . Got a question - what is the title of the song in the intro ? Really curious about that.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hi Buddy... The song is called "Its Not When" by "The Transitions".... here's a link to their FB page.. facebook.com/TheTransitionsCoversOriginals/?fref=ts Good luck with your FZ6, hope it goes well for you..

Good video as always Del and Penny...like the new bike alot!! Big question though...when will the street fighter be finished or back on the bench?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hi Will, thanks for your kind words buddy, got the paint to do this weekend, then thats got to be flatted and polished, refitted and connected back up... a few other small jobs, then i can get it over to the dyno for a check over, and its done for now.. still more to do later like paint the wheels, new brakes etc.. but i want to get some fun on it before the bad weather sets in... and i can do more over the winter... so that means a couple of weeks maybe and ill get back to business on the fighter build.. its a long term build buddy, and i still have a lot to do.. but its not forgotten, just having a fun distraction with the turbo bike for a while.. breaks up the monotony and keeps you enthusiastic if you take a break from a long term build now and again, plus we dont want you all to get bored with one bike for months on end.... take care buddy and thanks again for your support.. Del.

Looking good Delboy. Dumb question; is "fish eye" the same as "orange peel" when talking paint imperfections? Just curious.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hey buddy.. No, they are two different things.. Orange peal is a generally rough grainy finish like the surface of an orange... but a 'Fish Eye' is a tiny little dimple or hole in the paint finish caused usually by a spec of grease or wax that stops the paint from sticking...

Hi guys! I have a question for your Q&A session! Its a crude one, but it something I am wondering as a fellow (unsuccessful) youtuber. Do you make enough money to theoretically consider making vids as a full time job? (dont care about numbers...)
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hi buddy... we have a stack of questions already for the Q&A and wont even get half of them done... this one has been asked a few times, and its always NO..we're a very long way from being able to do this full time.. thats why we both have day jobs. we would love to.. but the numbers are a long way short..

[p] Nice job Del . I know nothing about painting but My friend Pete hates tac rags for a reason . But that is his view on things . Perhaps you might a small heat lamp to cure the paint job a good call for the the fighter job. Cheers Pete.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Hi Pete... why does Pete hate TAK rags then?, i didnt know that..?
@petefroud5308
@petefroud5308 7 лет назад
Well from what he has said they can leave something to upset the paint . I can only go with his view . But he has painted a lot of cars tanks etc. I worked in the garage trade for well to long and the painters would use the rags . But Pete uses a alcohol of some kind to wipe the tank or car. I can only go with his advice and i trust it . Cheers Pete.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Yeah if you press too hard with a TAK rag you'll leave the tecky stuff on the paint surface.. they are generally respected though i believe..
@petefroud5308
@petefroud5308 7 лет назад
Fair play Del . I think Pete uses shop towels and wax and grease remover.
@MackieBass
@MackieBass 7 лет назад
That's one of the reasons I leave tak rag to air (dry) for at least 10-15 minutes before I use it, and never press it down hard or rub it in.
