My game is way too over scoped to ever be finished. In order to make my dream game achievable I need to start cutting things and start focusing on just the key aspects of my game.

I'm not sure if you're dropping the exploration element entirely or not but If so I'd like to make a case for keeping it : The idea of having to step away from your base to explore and gather resources in order to prepare for the next wave of enemies breaks the rules of tower defence games ( it usually boils down to just put your things in the right spot, sit back and relax), and in my opinion that's your greatest asset. Having to venture off into the world with a time limit and a list of things you need to gather is a great and engaging idea, I think it'll make the tower defence section more rewarding and, more importantly, make your game more unique. My philosophy for game design is to always look for nice risk-reward scenarios, and with the exploration you get a great risk-reward right out of the gate : "Do I spend more time organising my defences with the resources I have or do I venture out into the wilderness to bolster my defences at the risk of dying/losing too much time ?" Right now I think focusing on the tower defence aspect is the right move but I hope you consider going back to exploration later on.

I agree. Figuring out the tower defense gameplay loop is great for now, but once things start taking shape I hope the unique exploration aspect makes a return.

his issue is that doing it alone is just so much work and exploration requires a massive amount of work to add things to that it's an obvious candidate to scrap as it will save a massive amount of time and work. Which can then be put towards core features. he's not scrapping it because he wants too. he's doing it because it's too much to do alone.

Yessss cut cut cut! Find the core game loop that is the most fun, refine it to be awesome, then add other things back in. I'm a pretty new indie dev myself, but I find it SUPER helpful to over-craft my core game then expand into other things. For instance, I love simplifying the reload to just a button. This creates an opportunity to gamify that mechanic rather than turning it into a menu chore. Imagine if every defensive structure had some visual way of telegraphing what you could do it assist it, like if it's smoking you hit it with a hammer to repair it, or flashing red it's getting hot and needs water from a bucket, or a big bullet with an X could pop up over it when it's low on ammo and you equip the bandoleer to reload. Then you can expand this to be more situational, maybe you can swap ammo types to combat different enemies or look at where there are dull moments, and ask yourself what is the most fun way to spend the in-between rounds: Rebuilding? Crafting new stuff? Gathering from the enemy wreckage or surrounding forests? All valid ways to spend time, but what is the most fun.

It doesn't matter if your game is too complicated and have a large scope with "Too many features" the best approach is to make a vertical slice as quickly as possible with only the main features to have a working game, and from that point you add features little by little but what you need is to always have a working game loop (start -> win/lose -> restart)
@overphildev
@overphildev 2 месяца назад
Very true I just also want to finish it one day so adding everything I think of would prevent that. Had to draw the line somewhere. But getting a game loop is huge

If you’re still reading comments on this video or are still open to making more changes later on to kind of help a survival/exploration aspect of the game you could make a system that gives you time to explore but also still challenges you. Morning: You have some free time, you could have a system where there’s apples or maybe rabbits that you can catch (perhaps a long distance weapon to make catching rabbits easier) that you can give to the boy for extra rewards. Noon: collect/building time! But also the option to take quests from the boy, he wants some flowers…rocks…or the like, and if you do enough like 5 quests you get access to new upgrades the boy can offer. Dusk: Lock in and prepare. Bedtime: The boy is asleep, but the forest is not, try your best to defend the house until morning! Maybe even have a small little animation that when the wave is over the robot connects a charger cord in the back of the house to himself and falls asleep.

@grenvallion
@grenvallion 19 часов назад
as for knowing where the enemies are. The weathervane idea is cool but impactical. A simple Red arrow above each enemies head pointing down toward the enmies head would work much better imo. To make reloading turrets more dangerous. You could add a reload timer, where it takes maybe 6 seconds to reload the turret with you stuck in place while you reload it. This reload timer or reload speed could be increased on new bigger, stronger turrets if you wanted to add new variants later. Such as a missile turret might take 10 seconds or more to reload but would deal damage in an aoe instead. Making it useful for grouped up enemies but also more risky to reload as it takes longer and makes you vulnerable while you cant move for longer.

relax man, i have a survival game, I had to redo, it's kind of sad but the experience we gain in the sketch is insane, I managed to redo a 5 month project in 3 hours and considering everything I've progressed. now the game It's improved and i cleaned up the code of the project a lot, if we don't do this it will become increasingly difficult to evolve the project, try this and I guarantee you will see the difference in both your skill and in the game!

@@overphildev It seems like you are using the default render pipeline. Convert to URP. There are plenty of videos explaining how to make your game look much better by just fixing the lighting with post processing.
@kabinet0
@kabinet0 2 месяца назад
@@overphildev The other answer to this question is misleading. Lighting and post processing are separate topics. You can't fix one with the other, and you are already using URP. (which aside from light falloff being exponential is remarkably similar to Built In out of the box) I'd attribute a lot of the look to the assets used and by extension lack of clear art direction. Figuring out a style, both for models and textures, is the best way to improve the look of the game. (For example the semi realistic skybox clashes with most of the cartoony assets) Having a bit more liveliness would also help considering it's a forested environment. (think sway in the leaves, moving clouds & the like) The materials on a lot of the assets are also textureless and extremely plastic-y, this boils down to using more coherent assets. (and maybe lower smoothness overall :P) As for lighting, best I can recommend is to do something about the flatness of it all. Baking some ambient occlusion into the tree assets in authoring (leaves specifically), and getting nicer ambient lighting would go a long way. Figuring out anything more complex like GI would be way out of scope and particularly difficult since the game is procedural. Post processing can help but it won't fix any of the other more fundamental problems I've mentioned. Tonemapping is important to the look of a game, and frankly the default Neutral tonemapping in URP seems to be doing it's job and avoiding particularly blown out highlights. I wouldn't do anything aside from some light color correction to fit a desired mood honestly. TLDR there is no "make game look good" button or tutorial, it boils down to having strong art direction, and an understanding of how to achieve whatever effects your artstyle demands.

Please consider my idea: Make a fog around the map, (like darkness or something) if player go there then losing or something. Out of this darkness enemy robots are coming. Then instead of having a shop open every round - make it dynamic by bringing apples or something to the house to activate the shop. (Apples are spawning on the map). That means the player can have more interaction, not only load an ammo to the turret and wait. Also he is taking a risk. For example enemies can have bigger damage when far from the base, or near the apples. 😊 (This is just a scratch idea so change it to your needs) 😊

base defense survival farming ah yes i have played somewhat of a similar game before let me tell u u dont wanna go that route because that shit is hard to balance the game mentioned is citywars tower defense(free on steam), there is literally so many things to do, u gotta do tower defense, collect resources, build up a farm, to get stuff to upgrade ur towers, and u can for whatever reason fight with weapons and also die the whole thing is executed badly, and a year later the devs still continue to add new unnecessary stuff(cosmetics, new areas and towers) instead of rectifying the fundamental flaws and perfecting the concept, i LITERALLY didnt see a single change in the fundamental gameplay when i went back to check it out after a year, which was absurd, pretty much a dead game at some point there really is too much thing to do

I think you should stick with the exploration and the bigger map, because it would be more fun and not boring. Like finding materials to upgrade the house, tools(like ores) etc. The exploration is a crucial part of a farming a tower defense game, to find animals and other things. The bigger map too!

The ammo / turret ammo change doesn't work together with the new limited inventory. To make that work you gonna need as little item variation as possible, else the player is just busy running around and storing stuff instead of playing the game. Instead just add up to 25 bullets to turret if possible per e press(if there are lessen then 25 in inventory-> add them to the turret). Also I think the 6 item slots won't work with crafting at all, but I'm curious about future developments! Maybe you will surprise me
@overphildev
@overphildev 2 месяца назад
very fair. I am worried adding an item for it will just waste space but I think down the road when I add more things it will help with balancing. It will be trail and error though so if it doesn't work I can always use your idea.
