A Natural Marvel
Delicate Arch stands at an impressive 52 feet tall and 32 feet wide,
making it the largest free-standing arch in the park.
Formed from Entrada Sandstone, this arch was sculpted over millions of years
by the forces of erosion and weathering.
The original sandstone fin gradually wore away, leaving behind this magnificent structure that we see today.
Historical Significance
The arch has had several names throughout history, from “Cowboy’s Chaps” to
"Old Maid’s Bloomers". It was officially named “Delicate Arch” in 1934 by Frank Beckwith,
leader of the Arches National Monument Scientific Expedition.
Interestingly, the arch wasn’t included in the original boundaries of the national monument
when it was designated in 1929; it was added later in 1938.
Cultural Impact
Delicate Arch is more than just a geological wonder; it’s a cultural icon.
It has been featured on Utah license plates and a postage stamp commemorating
Utah’s centennial anniversary of admission to the Union in 1886.
The Olympic torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics even passed through the arch.
